One of The Sunday Times Top 100 places to stay in 2010.

Polden Hills House is at the heart of one of England's finest tourist locations, but it is only five minutes from the M5 motorway. The house is full of family books, portraits and antiques and sleeps up to 16 in six beautifully decorated bedrooms on 22 acres of wonderful gardens and grounds.

The house, cottage and gardens are looked after by a dedicated and caring team that takes pride in providing exceptional service. On arrival, they provide a generous hamper of local foods, carefully chosen wines and locally produced apple juice. Superb cooks can be arranged for guests who want someone to prepare for a special occasion. A natural beauty therapist can be requested for guests who desire further pampering. The house has something for everyone including: a children's play area with playhouse, swing and fort; a games field; broadband internet access; and Sky satellite TV.

There is very little noise other than occasional 'mooing' or 'crowing' from Great Tree Farm next door. There is also a large, farmhouse-style Old Kitchen, a Breakfast Room (the former Pantry), and a Laundry (the former Larder). The maximum number that can be seated around the main Dining Room table is 14, but there is also a table suitable for 'kids' teas' in the Breakfast Room.

We also provide a grass area for football, with basketball and other ball games in the stable yard, behind the garages.
The house is set in 22 acres with beautiful gardens. We nurture some very special trees, particularly the only known specimen in the UK of an unusual type of Chinese Zelkova or elm, and some very fine limes and a wide range of unusual apples and pears (help yourselves to fruit in season). The grounds include the following:

- The Tilting Yard - a small, pretty garden in front of the house.

- 'Ha ha' - a large pond that separates the Main Garden from the Orchard.
- The Orchard - a meadow with old apple trees, mature limes, abundant cowslips, a bog garden and a wild garden.
- Bushey Close - a field beyond the Orchard; sometimes used for horses, archery or falconry.
- The Walled Garden - leased out under the Channel 4 TV Landshare Scheme - which occasionally provides our guests and staff with fruit, vegetables or flowers for cutting in season.
- The games field - a grassy area beyond the stable yard for football, basket ball, badminton etc. There is a children's play area with playhouse, slide and fort.
- The Barbecue.
- The Kitchen Garden - a pleasant area for the cook's glass of wine!

With oak beams, low ceiling and wood-burning stove, this peaceful room is a great space for guests to gather.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...

Really do?

A host of local days out at the West Country’s most loved attractions: Kilve Court Gardens, Cheddar Gorge and Caves, Glastonbury Tor, Milton Lodge Gardens, Wells Cathedral, Wookey Hole all weather attraction. Victorian seaside resorts of Burnham-on-Sea or Weston-super-Mare with its Grand Pier and long sandy beach. More than 40 gardens and stately homes within a day’s excursion from Cossington

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?

Set in 22 acres of beautiful grounds makes this an ideal place for a family gathering.  With indoor and outdoor activities to occupy the children whether it is football in the meadow, badminton, table tennis or darts in the games room.

  • We'll be back.

    Posted by Natalie on 24/03/2020

Stayed here for a weekend in March, 16 adults and 1 child and 3 dogs . We hired the cottage and the house, the whole estate was fantastic, we all had so much fun. The house was huge and had everything you could possibly need. The cottage was very modern and cosy. The care packages left for us was a lovely extra touch and anything else we needed was never too much trouble. We will definitely be booking again. Can't wait for next year.

  • Beautiful property

    Posted by Sue on 25/06/2016

We stayed at Polden Hills House & Cottage to celebrate our mothers 80th Birthday. We chose these properties because they slept 22 but our main priority was having the disability facilities. The House and Cottage were above and beyond our expectations, it is a beautiful property steeped in history and antiques whilst maintaining a very homely, family feel. The house offered brilliant facilities that cater for all ages from babies through to the older generation. We self catered and the kitchen facilities and equipment were second to none and made food prep and storage very easy! Thank you we can't fault anything.

  • Oozing with character!

    Posted by David on 13/06/2016

From the moment we parked the car and walked through the gardens we were impressed by the beautifully tended lawns and the colourful borders. Polden Hills House certainly lived up to its promise, oozing with character yet with every convenience you would expect from a high end self catering property. The cottage complimented the main house with its thoughtful refurbishment which continues the theme of the main house and also has a downstairs bedroom with disabled access. The Library dining room was full of warmth and charm for our large family dinners and the lovely garden furniture provided an excellent focus point during the day whilst we chatted, played croquet, boules and badminton, or just found a quiet corner to completely relax. Our friends and family did not want to leave and we are sure to book again before long. I would certainly recommend this special house and gardens which offers the perfect location for a get together across the generations.

  • Would love to come again

    Posted by Ashley on 09/06/2016

We had a fantastic weekend celebrating my Auntie's 60th at Polden Hills. The layout of the house and cottage was perfect for our party, and there were no disputes about bedrooms because they were all lovely! Everyone really enjoyed the garden, especially the badminton, table tennis and croquet and just sitting round the enormous table chatting. The kitchen was great- very well equipped and easy to find your way around- and we had 2 lovely big meals in the dining room. The only problem was that we didn't really want to leave! A couple more days would have been perfect. We would definitely love to come again.

  • Amazing weekend

    Posted by Lorna on 19/03/2016

My whole family were very favourably impressed with both the house and the cottage, They are really well equipped- everything you could possibly need and more! The beds were very comfortable and the rooms are beautifully decorated. We had an amazing weekend and were particularly lucky with the weather which meant the children could play outside in the beautiful gardens.
