Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Owner Profile

Property Owner
Richard

How long have you owned the property?
5 years

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
We loved the fact that it was a derelict pile of rotting timber when we bought it!! It gave us an opportunity to make a property exactly how we would want it if we were holidaying in the Dordogne!

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
It was actually used - not so long ago - to dry tobacco... There was even some still in there when we bought the property!!

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Not sure, I think we have as a few have flown in on private jets, but we try to leave people to it!

What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received
"The pool isn't big enough!!"

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
As little as possible, RELAX!

Really eat?
Everything possible, it's all so lovely!!

Really see?
Your family! Time to switch the phone and wifi off.

Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Don't travel too far away, there is so much locally... Do the markets!

  • Excellent

Very good first impression and there were plenty of general household provisions including some food items. The premises were very clean too. There are lots of indoor and outdoor games and the pool is lovely and clean. Excellent.

  • Fantastic villa

    on 05/07/2022

The Tobacco Barn is a fantastic villa to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside, while being close to the lovely village of Monpazier, and within an hour's drive of all the beautiful towns and villages along the Dordogne River valley. A few small glitches which the local agent sorted out for us.

  • Incredible time!

    on 27/08/2019

I came back from a very nice holiday with friends at The Tobacco Barn. A nice place in a lovely location. And I have to say organisation top class - probably best yet on any villa rental holiday I’ve been on. I’d book with you again, and I’d stay at this again.

  • Amazing time in France!

    on 29/07/2019

I suppose we should start the review by mentioning how impressed we were by the communication via Olivers Travels, and the ease by which we were able to book the property. The emails leading up to our trip were relevant and useful (I particularly liked the travel check list of things to take and things to remember to do back at home), and the goodie package which arrived just before we left was a fabulous surprise!
Having holidayed in the Dordogne for many years, we chose the Tobacco Barn as it was bright and light, large windows and less austere (and spooky) than some traditional French properties. We arrived after a long drive from St Malo, coupled with excellent directions on our House Pack emailed to us by Oliver's Travels. The pool glistened welcomely to us, and access to the house was simple via the key box. All was pretty straightforward. The photographs were realistic and there were no disappointments!! Two glorious weeks ensued. We loved Monpazier, a most charming small Bastide town, full of climbing roses and wisteria. Several boulangeries, small (but more than adequate) supermarkets, and restaurants/coffee shops. The market on Thursday was well worth a visit. Monflanquin was only 15-20 mins away and was similarly charming, we had a fabulous meal at Le Prince Noir (kids were delighted to find a burger!). Issiac had a marvellous market on a Sunday, which should not be missed (go early for parking!). We were sorry to leave after our two weeks, and have booked to come back next summer. Monpazier has fast become our favourite place to visit. To summarise, a wonderful two weeks, and we are really looking forward to coming back next summer!

  • Lovely villa holiday

    on 08/08/2018

Lovely spacious, modern and well equipped property. The garden was beautifully landscaped and the location very peaceful.

  • Just what we Needed

    on 20/09/2017

The accommodation was well provided for with all utilities you would require. Location was really peaceful with a convenient village close by for groceries etc.

  • We couldn't have enjoyed our stay more

    on 26/06/2017

As guests at the Tobacco Barn we spent a wonderful week enjoying the peaceful rural setting and comfortable stylish facilities of the barn as well as the beautiful pool which was a great bonus in the hot weather. Monpazier is a perfect bastide town only a few minutes away and was a pleasure in which to spend time. The whole area has much to offer and we couldn't have enjoyed our stay more.

  • Hope to return soon

    on 05/06/2017

Dear Richard, I am now truly guilt ridden - not only didn't I write a review of the Tobacco Barn but we still haven't booked a return which we need to do as our granddaughter will love the pool. To make things worse we have copied some of your amazing design ideas and are unashamedly acting as if it was all our own work !! Our trip got off to a great start as the car hire guys were just so different to the normal confusing up selling agents. The directions were superb and best of all when we arrived at the barn everything was as described, as pictured- no clever photography, no small rooms made to look large - just exactly as shown. Fabulous! We loved Monpazier- dining is a bit different here to Spain where we spend a lot of time but we got the hang of it. Best of all was just being able to enjoy great food and wine at the house in perfect peace. We slept so well too. My apologies for not doing the review sooner and in future I promise to credit you for our inspired interior design! Hope to return soon but have committed to a lot of long haul adventures whilst I am still young enough. Regards, Steve (Brighton)

  • We would highly recommend the Tobacco Barn to anyone

    on 04/07/2015

We have just spent a fantastic week at the Tobacco Barn. It's in a superb location very close to Monpazier which is just gorgeous and the other Dordogne attractions are not far away. The accommodation is very modern and comfortable and we wanted for nothing. Even evening entertainment of the local barn owl searching for food for its young was laid on!

  • The barn is fantastic, the finishing touches were perfect..

    Created on 08/06/2014

The barn is fantastic, the finishing touches were perfect and you could really feel and appreciate the quality. The beds were all ridiculously comfortable (although my bed at home now feels likes sleeping on a brick in comparison!) the kitchen facilities were excellent, plenty of space to prepare the food etc. and the living room was stunning (we all loved the lighting feature!). My family and I stayed at the Tobacco Barn for a week in late August 2012, there were five adults and two young children and we all were incredibly sad to leave. The facilities at the barn are excellent and the decor is absolutely stunning, the staircase is a wonderful surprise! In total, there are three double rooms with the forth bedroom housing the 3 children's beds, all of which are beautifully decorated and fitted out with everything you would expect. The Tobacco Barn is located in quite a remote area, and a car is a must. The nearest bastide is approximately a 5 minute drive, which is perfect for the household's fresh bread, cheeses and wines (the necessities!). All in all my family and I had a fabulous time and we are already considering making it a regular annual trip....

  • Highest standard and quality

    on 14/03/2012

I have watched this barn being developed from a shell to a fabulous holiday home build to the highest standard and quality. Great location!!
