Cala en Porter is a great location for a holiday with family or friends. There is much to do, and it is very easy to get there from the airport. It is literally 10-15 minutes away. The beach is stunning. The walk down the 181 steps is definitely worth it, but if you are not up to it, you can drive down or take a little train. There is a great tapas bar on the beach. There are lovely views of the gorge, and a huge number of colourful fish can be found if you snorkel. The restaurants are superb as are the bars. If you like live entertainment then a trip to Covas den Xoroi, a cave-come-bar-come-nightclub, is a must.

Cala en Porter is very close to the capital Mahon. This cool capital does a great job of mixing culture and history with beach life. There are many beautiful churches and various architectural treasures to visit, many cocktails to sip in chic surroundings and wonderful, idyllic beaches to chill out on. There are charming shops to visit for souvenirs and trinkets. The 18th century Xoriguer Gin Distillery is very interesting and worth a visit to sample the gins, liquors and herb drinks.

A 20-minute drive takes you inland to Alaoir. The beautiful maze of charming, narrow streets is full of lovely little shops, restaurants, bars and ice-cream parlours. The Munt de l’Angel Park has magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. The town is famous for its shoemaking. You can visit the Pons Quintana factory shop as you no doubt will need some more shoes for the suitcase! Alaior is the birthplace of the internationally renowned Menorcan cheese (Queso de Menorca), as well as homemade sausages, ice creams, pastries and liquors, so a great place to pick up some goodies.

Son Bou is also close by with its superb, long beach, shallow waters and the Prat de Son Bou nature reserve with dunes, marshes and diverse birdlife.

THE REGION

The mellow island of Menorca drums to a slower beat than siblings Mallorca and Ibiza, and therefore perfect if you’re looking for a holiday of rest and relaxation. The easternmost Balearic Island is lined by some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean: long swathes of powder-fine sand give way to rocky calas (bays) lapped by pale blue waters.

While you’re enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Menorca you may well want to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we’ve put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Menorca is a wonderful destination for families. There are perfect, sheltered beaches, interesting caves to explore, fantastic coastal paths to follow on bikes or by foot, horse riding, watersports, restaurants catering for families and beautiful sunshine.

Children will love the beach at Cala en Porter. The cove is very sheltered and the water shallow for a long way, so it is perfect for playing in. You can take the steps down to the beach or a little train which children will enjoy. Menorca en Kayak is based at Cala en Porter and offers guided sessions of kayaking. There is a wonderful kayaking excursion to see the astonishing geological formations of the cliffs and caves around the coast with a chance to swim and snorkel as well. The colourful fish are fantastic to look at.

As well as having superb beaches, Menorca has a rich archaeological heritage too with settlements dating back to at least 2000CB. Rattling down dirt tracks on a jeep safari is a really fun way to have a look at some of these sites while knowledgeable guides bring it all to life. You might even spot an Egyptian vulture, a booted eagle or a red kite along the way!

Children will love the small waterparks on the island as well as the Lloc de Menorca Zoo. It is located between Mahon and Alaior and is calm and low-key. Children will learn about the goats, sheep and cows that live on the island and also see lemurs, macaques, wallabies, emus and lots of birds and reptiles. They can walk with the animals in certain sections of the zoo. There is also a play area and a café.
