Perched on the side of the Sierra de Bernia mountain range, this spacious contemporary villa enjoys splendid views over the surrounding landscape and down to the sea. With bright rooms and a lovely terrace and pool, it is the ideal spot to enjoy a relaxing break beneath the Mediterranean sun.
 
Situated in a quiet residential area, Villa Tarta is arranged over three levels, making the most of its elevated position. The main living area is found on the ground floor, with a large living-dining room that enjoys plenty of natural light through the glass doors that span the front of the room and give access out onto the terrace. To one side, an L-shaped sofa sits in front of a fireplace, whilst a central dining table enjoys views out to the pool and landscape beyond. To the other end of the space is a fully-equipped kitchen with sleek timber cabinets and a central island counter. A sliding door leads out to the terrace, making it easy to serve up meals outside, and a beautiful barbecue area is perfect for cooking in the open air.
 
The timber decking invites you to make the most of the privileged setting, with expansive views across the landscape and over the coast. A small plunge pool is ideal for cooling off, whilst a couple of loungers are perfectly positioned to soak up the sun throughout the day. An outdoor dining table sits beside an olive tree, where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch or spend a long entertaining evening whilst watching the light fade over the nearby mountains. There is also an informal seating area sheltered beneath the overhanging roof, with a large sofa inviting you to sit in comfort and share an after-dinner drink, making the most of the balmy evenings.
 
On the upper floor, the main suite features a four-poster bed and enjoys large openings that frame the spectacular views whilst opening out onto the balcony. There is also a partially shaded terrace to one side, where you can wake up and enjoy a peaceful cup of coffee in the morning sun. The ensuite bathroom has a shower and a large jacuzzi bathtub, where you can relax and look out of the picture frame windows over the surrounding landscape. Along the corridor, a second bedroom with twin beds features a charming Juliet balcony welcoming you to leave the doors open to enjoy a gentle breeze. The third bedroom is found on the ground floor beside the entrance hall, featuring a large double bed and a private bathroom and shower. There is also a garage with space for two cars on the lower ground floor, entered from the street level.

Set in the foothills of the spectacular Sierra de Bernia mountain range, Villa Tarta is perfectly positioned to explore the area's plentiful trails. A number of paths are easily accessed nearby or seek out one of the more challenging routes and climb up to the Fort de Bernia, which was constructed in 1562 as a military fortress in order to defend the coast from Ottoman attacks. The walk is worthwhile, as its elevated perspective affords stunning views over the Bay of Altea and out of the Mediterranean Sea.
 
The nearby area of Altea la Vella has a number of local restaurants and shops, where you can purchase fresh produce to enjoy back at the villa or hop in the car and head just 20 minutes north along the coast, where the vibrant town of Calpe has plenty to see. Distinguished by the monumental Penon de Ifach mountain, which gives the landscape its distinctive shape, the coastal town dates back to the Valencian Bronze Age. There is a trail to reach the mountain's summit, which takes you through a splendid tunnel that cuts through the enormous rock before reaching the top, where you can enjoy a stunning view over the bay and surrounding coastline. Sitting at the bottom of the rock, Calpe has an active fishing port where you can watch the boats return with their daily catch or experience the fish auctioning at the end of each day. There are a  number of local restaurants and bars nearby to enjoy an aperitif or share a classic dish of paella or a delicious plate of fresh seafood.
 
Calpe has a number of beaches for spending the day beside the sea. The central Playa del Arenal Bol is a popular spot for swimming, with a long stretch of white sand and lovely blue waters. A lively promenade hugs the beach, where a number of bars and restaurants invite you to enjoy a relaxing lunch whilst enjoying views over the sea. Alternatively, to the north of the town, the Ruta Ecologica Benissa is an accessible coastal path connecting the various bays and hidden coves, inviting you to wander along the cliff tops or drop down to one of the beaches and enjoy a swim. Sheltered between rocky cliffs, the beautiful Cala de la Fustera features a quiet bay with a crescent and fine white sand and clear blue waters. Spend the day at the beach or grab a snorkel to discover the rich posidonia seagrass that the area's seabed is known for. Tucked to the back of the beach, the Mandala Beach Bar is great for a cold drink or some tapas, which you can enjoy whilst admiring the beautiful view over the sea.
 
A 15-minute drive to the south, the typical Spanish town of Atlea is full of charm. Wander through the Casco Antiguo to discover the old quarter and walk along cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses, or admire the architecture dating back to Moorish times. Head up to the Plaça de l'Església to see the beautiful white and blue domed church, sit on one of the sunny terraces and enjoy an aperitif amongst locals and soak up the laid-back ambience. Carrer Major is home to many artisan boutiques and galleries where you can browse the local crafts, or if you are visiting on a Tuesday, be sure to visit the street market on Calle Filarmonica, where you can walk along rows of fresh produce and perhaps try your hand at bargaining and pick up something tasty to enjoy back at the villa.
 
To the southern end of Altea's beaches, the bay curves out to the headland that forms the Sierra Helada natural park. With 300m high cliffs, the park offers adventurous trails to explore the coastline and discover the rich marine flora and fauna. Perched to one end, the Albrir lighthouse can be accessed via a well-signposted path leading up from the park's entrance. Built in 1863, the lighthouse offers a splendid perspective with panoramic views up and down the coast.

Villa Tarta is a great place to spend a sunny break with all the family, with plenty of room to spread out and enjoy long summer days lounging beside the pool. The barbecue area and outdoor dining table are perfect for coming together and sharing an evening meal or settling the kids downstairs with a movie and enjoying a romantic moment over a quiet drink on the balcony.
 
With the coast just 10 minutes away, there is plenty of opportunity to spend days beside the sea. To the south of Altea, Cap Blanc Beach offers a long stretch of golden sand where young children can paddle in the shallow water or amuse themselves on one of the nearby playgrounds. There is also the option of renting a kayak or roller skates to race along the promenade or stop off at any one of the seafront restaurants for an ice cream or lunchtime snack.
 
Further south, Playa del Albir offers a quieter spot with a lovely stretch of white pebbles and a variety of water sports to choose from. Alternatively, for a more land-based activity, less than half an hour by car takes you to the headland, where the beautiful Sierra Helada natural park has plenty of accessible trails to explore. Walk out to the Albrir lighthouse on the top of the cliff and enjoy its splendid perspective with panoramic views up and down the coast.
 
The lively city of Benidorm is also nearby, where you can find the popular Aqualandia water park. Full of colourful slides, tubes and wave pools, the park has plenty for everyone and is a great option for a fun afternoon out. You can also head down to the marina and take a boat trip out to the Isla of Benidorm. Sitting in the middle of the bay, the protected area of natural beauty can be visited by little ferry boats called golondrinas that depart from the main harbour.
