Location
About the surrounding area of El CoscojalEl Coscojal enjoys a fabulous, countryside location close to the popular town of Lierganes. Cantabria offers something for every guest including wonderful beaches, foodie havens, magical mountains, beautiful scenery and charming, ancient villages. You can discover this dreamy, lush region by driving the country roads or perhaps cycling or hiking.
Lierganes enjoys a fascinating history and a charming array of shops, cafes and restaurants. Visitors enjoy delicious meals in the town which is known for its meats, river fish, fresh cheeses and famous pastries. Lierganes is also famous for its legend of the fish-man. The legend has it that around 1650 there lived a couple in the village named Francisco de la Vega and Maria del Casar who had four sons. When the father died, the mother decided to send one son to Bilbao so that he could learn to be a carpenter. Francisco de la Vega Casar lived there until 1674 when he went to swim with friends in Bilbao’s estuary and was taken by the river currents. Five years later, fishermen in the Bay of Cadiz noticed a strange looking creature and others saw the same. Loaves of bread were used to capture this creature with human and fish characteristics. During interrogation the word Lierganes was used and he was taken close to the village and was able to guide himself to the house of Maria del Casar who recognised him as her son Francisco. After nine years of living a somewhat strange life he went swimming in the sea and was never seen again
Close by is the Palace and Museum of Elsedo in Pamanes, is one of Cantabria’s architectural jewels. The palaces dates back to the 18th century and was later restored by an Austrian couple. It is now home to the Museum of Contemporary Art, a fantastic museum brimming with modern sculptures and paintings.
Santander is a wonderful combination of lush green mountain landscapes, dazzling white sandy beaches, elegant mansions and palatial architecture. It carries the echo of its seafaring past. A stroll through the town takes you past the amazing Magdalena Palace, an iconic building location in the highest part of the peninsula. Visitors enjoy delicious cuisine including friend squid, squid with onion and clams. The new part of town is modern and trendy and includes the Botin Centre, designed by the award-winning architect Renzo Piano. Santander enjoys a mini zoo, museums, and the fabulous beaches of El Sardinero, El Camello, Matalenas, La Concha and Los Peligros.
Bilbao, the city of the Guggenheim, boasts ground breaking architecture, delicious eateries and a very unique character. It is full of charming streets and bars offering pintxos. There are many famous eateries, including the legendary Cafe Iruna next to the Albia Gardens which opened in 1903. You can cross the Bilbao Estuary and walk along the riverbank, you can take the Artxanda cable car linking the area of Campo Volantin with Mount Artxanda for some amazing city views or visit the art museums. The Zubizuri Bridge was designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava and offers wonderful views of the towers designed by the Japanese architect Isozaki Atea. A stroll along the estuary leads you to the magnificent Guggenheim Museum made from 33,000 titanium sheets and designed by Frank Gehry. The sculptures outside the museum are equally famous including the enormous dog with its steel base and living flowers. The stunning Euskalduna Palace, another jewel of contemporary architecture, hosts exhibitions and shows. Other buildings that you should include in your tour of Bilbao are the Bilbao Town Hall, Begona Basilica, Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts, the colourful Mercado de la Ribera Market, Plaza Neuva Square, the cultural centre Azkuna Zentroa and the Deusto University. If you are there on a Sunday, the lovely Arenal Park hosts a pretty flower market. The area known as ‘the seven streets’ is where you will find the Ribera market amongst the cobblestones. Here you will taste some of the very best pintxos. Another Sunday market takes place in Plaza Nueva. If you have enough time when you are in Bilbao you can take a sailing boat along the Nervion Estuary or make a trip to Portugalete and the Bizkaia Hanging Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site designed by the architect behind the Eiffel Tower.

Best Suited For: All AgesEl Coscojal is perfect for a family holiday. There is so much space in the villa and the garden is enormous and totally stunning. As well as the newly restored swimming pool, there is plenty of space for family games. Lovers of mountain and countryside walks enjoy the sensational location of this holiday home.
Santander has plenty of family friendly entertainment. It offers outdoor escalators on many of its hilly streets which helps a lot. To get the best view of Santander, you can take the funicular from the top of Calle Rio de la Pila and enjoy the views of the bay and the mountains. Another excellent viewpoint is the roof of Centro Botin by the waterfront. You have the option here to ride in the ‘singing’ elevator. Children love spotting the amazing street art, one piece by the world renowned artist Okuda on Calle Rio de la Pila. Santander enjoys many parks, perfect for picnics. The best include Jardines de Pereda with its playground and carousel and Parque Las Llamas with its lagoons, trails, play area and cafes. Children also enjoy Palacio Magdalena, the former summer residence of the Spanish Royal family. At the rear of the palace, there are penguins and seals plus there is a large children’s play area. Santander enjoys a number of wonderful beaches including Sardinero which is brilliant for families. Playa de los Peligros and Playa de los Bikinis are also very good and Playa de Matalenas is a popular spot in a protected cove.
The Cabarceno Natural Park is 17 km south of Santander with nearly 2000 acres of nature and more than one hundred different animal species from five continents. The animals live in large enclosures with some allowed to wander the park. It is a lovely day out.
Bilbao offers many attractions to entertain children. The city’s Maritime Museum is popular, housed in an old shipyard and offering many interactive exhibits and large ships to see and climb into. Children enjoy learning how Bilbao turned into an important shipping and fishing city. Dona Casilda Park is one of the best and biggest parks in the city, with wide green spaces, ducks and geese on the lake and beautiful fountains. There are playgrounds and some fairground attractions during holiday periods. It is a great place for a picnic. Riding the Artxanda Funicular is popular. The old mountain railway ferries families up and down the dramatic Artxanda Mountain, high above Bilbao. It is a great experience and the views at the top are amazing. There are several walkways at the top and a few restaurants. Another great way to see the city is to take one of the bilboats that pass many of the major sites on the water. Children love pointing out the famous buildings, especially the dreamy Guggenheim Museum. In the Guggenheim, children are mesmerised by the scale of the artworks and the building. They love the sculptures outside too, especially Jeff Koons’ colour Puppy and Tulips and the giant spider Mamen by Louise Bourgeois. The Basque Museum is very interesting. It is housed in an old 17th century church and college and offers thousands of objects from old fishing equipment to giants that are used during Basque festivals.
