About the surrounding area of Frenkloof VillaWell-situated within and overlooking the Peter Matkovich-designed, 27-hole Hermanus Golf Club, Fernkloof Villa is the perfect escape for a golfing holiday. But there is no shortage of other sights, attractions and activities if swinging the irons isn’t your idea of the perfect getaway.
Hermanus itself is a picturesque coastal town and one of the most popular along the Cape thanks to its great swimming beaches, mountain views and unique wetlands. Hermanus is particularly renowned for its whale watching. In fact, the town is recognised by the World Wildlife Fund as one of the 12 best whale watching destinations in the world. The town itself is brimming with bars, restaurants, cafes, art galleries and boutiques. Don’t forget to take a scenic walk along the coastline, taking in the Hermanus Cliff Path Biodiversity Walk and Whale Rock; make sure to keep your eyes peeled for Southern Right whales breaching in Walker Bay.
If exploring the area on foot or bicycle is up your alley, the neighbouring Fernkloof Nature Reserve is a pristine wilderness with an abundance of hiking trails showcasing the area’s diverse flora and fauna.
The Overberg region is also a beacon for wine lovers the world over thanks to its proximity to some of the best wine terroirs in Africa – acclaimed for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals. Make sure to delve into the renown Hermanus Wine Route which winds exquisitely up the Hemel en Aarde valley to take in some of the best local wineries and restaurants including Wine Village, Bouchard Finlayson, Spookfontein and La Vierge.
If a full day of exploring the big city is your idea of fun, Cape Town (2-hour drive) is not out of reach. The city is bustling with stunning beaches, museums, wineries, and of course the iconic Table Mountain.

Best Suited For: All AgesFernkloof Villa’s sun-soaked central courtyard, complete with swimming pool, soft lawn, and table tennis table, is a fun-filled sanctuary for kids of all ages. What is more, the villa’s protective, rectangular design and expansive indoor-outdoor lounging areas means keeping an eye on the kids will never be easier – even with a glass of wine in your hands!
But there is no shortage of fun activities for the kids outside the villa too. There’s hiking in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve for instance. There are a number of easy routes which include stunning vistas like waterfalls to keep the kids entertained between animal sightings. Or try the Cliff Path which runs for 12km along the Hermanus coast, starting from Grotto Beach and stretching to the New Harbour.
Time at the beach is a no-brainer in this part of the world, and while the beaches of Hermanus are a tad rocky, there are plenty of soft, sandy beaches nearby, including the endless Grotto Beach and the stunning Onrus Beach.
Of course, the true jewel in the crown of the Overberg region, and Hermanus in particular, is its whale watching. Whale season runs from early June to late November with Southern Right Whales arriving in the winter months to breed and give birth in the waters off Hermanus. The best way to see the whales is on a boat trip, where the kids can also expect to see dolphins, African penguins and Cape Fur Seals.
