Much of the area is above the tree line with the upper skiing areas located on a glacier, accessed by a second cable car. The view from the top lift station is breath-taking with spectacular views of the Argentière glacier and over towards Mont Dolent.
There are 8 main lifts with 2 gondolas, 2 cable cars and 4 chair lifts.

The Resort
Chamonix is often preceded by its own reputation. As one of the most famous ski resorts in the world, it has visitors travelling from all corners of the world to experience the epic runs year after year. The Chamonix town centre, also known as Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, is an endlessly inviting little city with enough going on to entertain skiers and non-skiers alike for weeks on end. For those travelling from the UK, it is fabulously easy to reach. You can drive straight from Calais by motorway and be set up in a gorgeous chalet in less than half a day.
The Chamonix Valley encompasses five main ski areas on four different mountains (with easy transfers in between). You can get yourself a single-resort lift pass or one that encompasses the whole valley. If you go with the latter option you’ll even have access to the Italian side of the valley in Courmayeur. The wider area encompasses 106 pistes at up to 3842m altitude and unparalleled off-piste runs.
Most of Chamonix’s ski areas are best suited to those who already feel at home on a pair of skis. Beginners definitely won’t get as much out of this valley as those who are comfortable tackling a black run. But that’s not saying Chamonix is unromantic by any means. There is incredible scenery for everyone to enjoy, from non-skiers to experts, and nature lovers will fall in love with the Chamonix in summer too. Ski season, however, often lasts until mid-March.
Once the skiing is over at the end of the day you’ll still find plenty to keep you occupied in town. There is an excellent selection of restaurants to choose from, ranging from Michelin starred fine dining to street food that will line your stomach for the après-ski (and rest assured there are dozens of great bars and clubs to choose from!)
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesChamonix is a fantastic ski resort with slopes for all levels of skiers and children are particularly well catered for.
There are plentiful ski schools that specialise in teaching children from the age of 3. Children can be signed up for half or full days with upgrades available to include childcare before or after the lesson and lunch if required. There are also nursery facilities and children’s clubs for fun activities. Chamonix offers plenty of other activities for children that do not ski and for children under the age of 3. Babies and toddlers can get a taste for some downhill action on the small slopes in Chamonix with free slopes behind the tennis court and next to the cross-country tracks. Sledges can be taken onto dedicated slopes at Les Planards or at the top of Prarion in Les Houches. Many of the ski hire shops will sell or rent sledges.
One adventure the kids are sure to love is a husky ride. Every Wednesday, subject to snow conditions, you can learn to drive your own sled from 8 years old or enjoy the ride as a passenger from any age. This is a really popular attraction so do book in advance to avoid disappointment!
Chamonix’s Alpine Coaster is great fun. Children can ride the luge along the 1300m track at the bottom of the Les Planards beginner ski area in the town centre. Children can ride from 3 years old and unaccompanied from 7 years old.
A fabulous thrilling adventure is Paret sledging. In traditional wooden sledges with one runner. Children aged 12 and above and adults brave enough, can take part from the upper slopes of Grands Montets. Older kids can take part in a Deluxe Igloo and Fondue Adventure, riding a 3km sledging track and hiking in snowshoes to a real snow igloo for a traditional cheese fondue.
Why not discover France’s largest glacier. It’s a real fun day to take the red cog Montenvers train up the side of the mountain to the historic station at the top, here you will find yourself immersed in a world of ice. The train leaves from the centre of Chamonix, behind the main SNF train station and takes 20 minutes to the top. Here there are jaw dropping views of the Mer de Glace glacier. Don’t miss the ice cave which is carved into the glacier or the glaciorium and crystal gallery.
Chamonix has plenty of indoor activities too. You could check out the sports centre for ice skating and a swimming pool with a fun zone including slides, rapids and massaging jets. Or maybe discover the history of the Chamonix valley at the Alpine Museum, the budding pioneers can learn about beginnings of mountaineering and the first ascent of Mont Blanc.
If it’s time to just relax why not enjoy the latest blockbuster at Chamonix’s multiscreen cinema, the Cinema Vox, with many of the films in English.
