The Chamonix Valley boasts one of the most spectacular skiing terrains in Europe, attracting visitors from all over the world to experience its breathtaking Les Grands Montets ski slopes.

Chalet Charmante is strategically positioned to take full advantage of this extraordinary area. Les Grands Montets features three distinctive zones, including the lower mountain area between Argentière Village and the main Lognan station at 1972m, the mixed alpine terrain from Lognan to Borchard at 2765m, and the steeper alpine terrain, encompassing the Argentière glacier up to 3275m.

While much of the terrain is above the tree line, with the upper skiing areas situated on a glacier and accessed by a second cable car, the view from the top lift station is nothing short of breathtaking. Visitors can enjoy spectacular vistas of the Argentière glacier and Mont Dolent.

With 8 main lifts, including 2 gondolas, 2 cable cars, and 4 chair lifts, Les Grands Montets caters to both thrill-seekers and expert skiers, offering formidable pistes and earning a reputation as one of the best off-piste ski areas in the Alps. However, Chamonix also caters to novice and intermediate skiers with excellent training slopes, especially at Les Houches, perfect for beginners with its expansive upper plateau.

The Chamonix Valley, measuring 16km long and 2km wide, hosts the Mont Blanc ski pass covering resorts such as Argentière and Les Houches, along with Megeve and even Verbier in Switzerland.

Chamonix operates as a fully functioning, year-round resort. Les Grands Montets provides fabulous scenery, stunning landscapes, and opportunities for exploring on foot or mountain bike, making the region an excellent destination throughout the year. There are numerous paths to explore, from ice-falls in the Chamonix Valley to waterfalls. Attractions include a cable car ride to the summit, offering breathtaking views of L’Aiguille Verte, Les Droites, and Les Drus peaks. Visitors can book a tandem paragliding flight from a 3220m altitude for a different thrill. The snow garden at the top of Grands Montets, constructed and maintained by the piste team, is not to be missed.

Closer to Chalet Charmante, Argentière is a truly charming and authentic village, just a few minutes' drive away. It offers a delightful selection of local restaurants, patisseries, shops, and bars, complemented by a beautiful Baroque-style church. Argentière also serves as the starting point for several fantastic hiking paths, including the ascent to Lac Blanc, providing stunning views of Mont Blanc.

Chamonix town, a mere 11 minutes drive from the chalet, is a vibrant hub both in summer and winter. In the summer, the alpine landscape transforms into a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering hiking and mountain biking activities. The Michelin-acclaimed restaurants and numerous bars in Chamonix ensure a lively après-ski experience. Nestled at the crossroads of France, Italy, and Switzerland, with the backdrop of the majestic Mont Blanc, Chamonix's unique Victorian architecture, pedestrianized town center, and picturesque river make it an idyllic destination for a memorable year-round alpine experience.

The Resort

Chamonix is often preceded by its own reputation. As one of the most famous ski resorts in the world, it has visitors travelling from all corners of the world to experience the epic runs year after year. The Chamonix town centre, also known as Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, is an endlessly inviting little city with enough going on to entertain skiers and non-skiers alike for weeks on end. For those travelling from the UK, it is fabulously easy to reach. You can drive straight from Calais by motorway and be set up in a gorgeous chalet in less than half a day.

The Chamonix Valley encompasses five main ski areas on four different mountains (with easy transfers in between). You can get yourself a single-resort lift pass or one that encompasses the whole valley. If you go with the latter option you’ll even have access to the Italian side of the valley in Courmayeur. The wider area encompasses 106 pistes at up to 3842m altitude and unparalleled off-piste runs.

Most of Chamonix’s ski areas are best suited to those who already feel at home on a pair of skis. Beginners definitely won’t get as much out of this valley as those who are comfortable tackling a black run. But that’s not saying Chamonix is unromantic by any means. There is incredible scenery for everyone to enjoy, from non-skiers to experts, and nature lovers will fall in love with the Chamonix in summer too. Ski season, however, often lasts until mid-March.

Once the skiing is over at the end of the day you’ll still find plenty to keep you occupied in town. There is an excellent selection of restaurants to choose from, ranging from Michelin starred fine dining to street food that will line your stomach for the après-ski (and rest assured there are dozens of great bars and clubs to choose from!)

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens Ideal for Xmas/NY

Chamonix is a fantastic destination that offers a wide range of activities for both winter and summer, ensuring that children have an unforgettable experience throughout the year.

Winter
During the winter season, Chamonix transforms into a snowy wonderland, perfect for skiing enthusiasts of all ages. There are plentiful ski schools that specialise in teaching children from the age of 3. Children can be signed up for half or full days with upgrades available to include childcare before or after the lesson and lunch if required. There are also nursery facilities and children’s clubs for fun activities. Chamonix offers plenty of other activities for children that do not ski and for children under the age of 3. Babies and toddlers can get a taste for some downhill action on the small slopes in Chamonix with free slopes behind the tennis court and next to the cross-country tracks. Sledges can be taken onto dedicated slopes at Les Planards or at the top of Prarion in Les Houches. Many of the ski hire shops will sell or rent sledges.

For an absolute treat why not take the kids for a husky ride. Every Wednesday, subject to snow conditions, you can learn to drive your own sled from 8 years old or enjoy the ride as a passenger from any age. This is a really popular attraction so do book in advance to avoid disappointment!

Paret sledging is another fabulous, thrilling adventure in traditional wooden sledges with one runner. Children aged 12 and above and adults brave enough, can take part from the upper slopes of Grands Montets. Older kids can take part in a Deluxe Igloo and Fondue Adventure, riding a 3km sledging track and hiking in snowshoes to a real snow igloo for a traditional cheese fondue.

Chamonix’s Alpine Coaster is great fun. Children can ride the luge along the 1300m track at the bottom of the Les Planards beginner ski area in the town centre. Children can ride from 3 years old and unaccompanied from 7 years old.

Summer
Come summer, Chamonix unveils a different set of activities for families. The red cog Montenvers train takes you to France's largest glacier, offering breathtaking views of the Mer de Glace glacier. Explore the ice cave carved into the glacier or visit the glaciorium and crystal gallery for a unique experience.

For more summer fun, the sports center offers ice skating and a swimming pool with a fun zone, including slides, rapids, and massaging jets. Discover the rich history of the Chamonix valley at the Alpine Museum, where budding pioneers can learn about the beginnings of mountaineering and the first ascent of Mont Blanc. And when it's time to relax, catch the latest blockbuster at Chamonix's multiscreen cinema, Cinema Vox, with many films available in English.

It was a quiet and excellent location close to Les Chosalets, an amazing landscape for the children to learn skiing and also a good starting point for my husband to go free riding. We are really very happy with our choice and looking forward to come back in March!
