Overview

Chalet Apartment Quirky Self-Catered Ideal for Kids Walk to Village Parking Space

The Alps have bewitched man for an eternity and it's not hard to see why. This area is beautiful all year round but truly comes to life in the winter months, commonly referred to as the 'ski season'. Bursting with natural beauty, this is a notorious hot spot for those who enjoy skiing and snowboarding, amongst other winter sports. But the beauty also extends to the manmade, with striking chalets and cabins that sparkle in the night like nearby stars. Whether you're an adrenaline junkie who plans to be on the slopes all day, someone who wants to soak up that cottage core vibe, or somewhere in between, let Apartment Julie be your base.

Your apartment is located in Méribel, which forms a central hub of sorts. It's based on the first floor of a gorgeous residence where you can choose to ski in and out if you so choose, allowing you to truly maximise the winter sports you partake in!

Comfortably fitting eight, the property has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The open plan living area includes a dining area and fully fitted kitchen complete with delightful (and convenient) serving hatch. You can also cosily fit around the fireplace and lose yourself to the delights of this lovely home. With views of the Courchevel Valley, you may not want to close the curtains. You can also make use of the ski room which contains a laundry room and garage.

The apartment has a colourful character which you'll notice immediately. It's festive and jaunty by design, with kaleidoscopic artwork, plush colourful cushions, and rich red throws. The combination of white walls, wooden furnishing and stone create a solid but inviting base with plenty of personality, promising something traditional merging with the modern.

The dining space leans into this authenticity with renderings of stags decorating the walls and a cosy wooden ambience creating a wholesome feel. The serving hatch is one of the most homely features of the property. The kitchen is fully fitted and furnished, and sleek in design, giving you everything you need should you wish to make a meal. The bedrooms further soften into their wooden furnishings, creating a serene and soothing atmosphere; think crisp white sheets, heart-shaped curves and snow-coloured curtains. The balconies are a wonderful way to wake up – sit out and take in those panoramas. The bathrooms are a mix of white with wooden furnishings making a clean and fresh space.

Meanwhile, the terrace hurls you onto views of mountains, chalets and cabins. The exterior of the property is also something to behold. Flanked by trees and elongated balconies, the charisma of the façade is matched by the gentle beauty within.

What you should know…

  • Méribel is the world’s largest ski area. If you’re short on time and want to maximise your experience, plan your priorities and any routes in advance.
  • You can buy ski passes on the day, but we would advise you to buy passes in advance, especially if there’s a popular route you really don’t want to miss!
  • Pack layers. Yes, the area can get very cold, but with so much activity, it’s easy to heat up, and nice to have lighter layers when you’re back in the apartment.

First things first, the French Alps are synonymous with the ski season. Whether you ski or snowboard, people come here for a good reason – Méribel is the world’s largest ski area, offering 300 marked runs, 160 ski lifts and 28 fun runs. It’s the perfect place for veterans to test their stamina and endurance, but also a great place for rookie skiers to learn the ropes and enjoy the many tracks marked with green or blue flags – this establishes them as beginner-friendly pistes.

Winter personified, you may feel like you’ve wandered through a wardrobe into Narnia, or a Christmas-coated Hogsmeade. Even if you are not visiting in winter, you’ll enjoy the lush and wild green of the valleys and the bright blue skies.

Méribel runs across three vast valleys. Through them are woven eleven resorts, Courchevel, Bride-les-Bains, Les Menuires, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Val Thorens and Orelle, which can all be explored, rather uniquely, by skis.

A tradition of the area is to stop for the catchily named ‘apres-ski’. Venture into one of the many slope-side bars for a tipple and to talk about your skis and challenges. Be prepared for some good-natured boasting, comparisons about sore muscles, and strategies for which slopes to tackle. This is the place to be if you want to be flung directly into the heart of snowy sociability.

For a more peaceful experience, Méribel village is a scaled-down slice of heaven that still offers all you really need, including a mini market, two restaurants, a ski pass shop, bakery, bar, chapel and, in true Alps style, a rather unexpected bread oven. If you want to see a more authentic side of the Allues Valley – a look at how the inhabitants truly live, Mussillon, La Renarde and the Route des Chalets are lovely residential areas that are well worth a visit.

If you think that Méribel is all about extreme sports and James Bond-level skiing, we’d like to reassure you. There’s so much else to do here. You can enjoy the many restaurants, many of which are terraced, and enjoy a range of cheese-based delicacies, the most known of which is likely fondue – that fantastically gooey, rich treat. Indeed, if you’re a cheese lover, you’ll be very happy, as cheese is a staple product of the Alps.

Explore the shops for decorations and gifts so you can bring a bit of this winter haven back with you. Or enjoy a toboggan run or a night sledding beneath the stars. On a night with good visibility, not much can beat this. There are also more unusual experiences you can enjoy that are good fun, such as trying a snake-gliss. Not heard of it before? Grab your sled and interlock it with several others to form a sort of snake which you can use to glide through the snow – a really fun experience to share with family and friends, and a quick-fire way to make new friends too.

A firm favourite is Olympic Park where you can do pretty much anything, including skate indoors, watch a film, free climb, go bowling and play hockey.

The Resort

Méribel is a village with a true alpine heart. You won’t find blocks of hotels and purpose-built facilities here. Instead, the compact and lively town centre is picture-postcard perfect, and its atmosphere is quaint and fairytale-like. It is without a doubt the most romantic resort in the area and if you’re planning a couples holiday in the snow you’ll definitely want to take a closer look at Méribel.

At the centre of the world famous Trois Vallées (Three Valleys), Méribel makes up part of the largest ski domain in the world. Across the valleys, it has six sister resorts. You can either get a single-resort lift pass and keep to the fantastic beginner and intermediate terrain there, but you also have the option of purchasing a pass that covers the whole area.

The advanced lift system at Méribel will let you maximise your time on the snow and make sure you’re not waiting around in queues. With 67 runs to try out just in the resort itself, there is no time to be wasted. Just beware of the afternoon sun cutting things short on the west-facing slopes and prepare to get up with the sun if you’re after untouched powder. At it’s highest skiing point Méribel reaches an altitude of 2952 metres and the descent from this point is known to be one of the most scenic runs around.

Aside from the world-class skiing, Méribel is also known to be one of the liveliest resorts in the Three Valleys. Many of its residents and bar-owners (as well as plenty of its visitors) are expat-Brits who certainly know how to party. The après-ski scene here is truly top-notch!

When planning the perfect family holiday, you want to make sure all your bases are covered. Méribel allows that with ease. This is a lively, exciting and full-of-life place for free spirits and snuggly hermits alike. The fresh mountain air and beautiful surroundings are a tonic for the soul and bring out everyone’s best. This is a great place to get away from it all, to dive into nature, and into a very particular capsule where winter sports are the order of the day. That’s certainly what the area is most popular for, but not the only thing you can do here. So don’t be worried if your children aren’t avid skiers. They can learn at the ski school or practice at yeti park, or they can try any of the other activities available.

Snowboarding is also hugely popular here and well worth trying too. Children tend to be very keen to enjoy the range of activities and experiences on offer. Other activities available include tobogganing, one of the tamer ways to meet that adrenaline rush, or the very magical experience of pony-sledding which is always prevalent with families.

Don’t just limit yourself to the day either. Head out at night to enjoy night-time sledding under the blanket of the night sky. With good visibility, you may even see the stars. Little children can be entertained in the play parks, and the Olympic Park is a firm fixture with all because it offers such variety. Here you can really do everything – enjoy the skating rink, head to the cinema, enjoy a meal, go climbing, bowling or watch some hockey. This is a great place for those who aren’t ski or snowboarding aficionados but still want that winter feel.

It would be a shame to miss out on the serene landscape of Méribel village. There’s enough here to keep you occupied and just little enough to create a truly cosy feel. Enjoy one of the two restaurants, pay a visit to the little chapel or top up at the mini market.

The residential areas of Le Rond Point Des Pistes, Mussillon, La Renarde and the Route des Chalets all offer a unique window into the authentic way the locals live, which makes for an intriguing contrast against the backdrop of skiers and snowboarders. Enjoy family time back at your apartment – nights by the fire or out on the balcony, delicious meals delivered through the hatch and heavenly beds for a good night’s sleep.
