Located in Chafé, in northern Portugal, sits this chic four-bedroom lodge. The tranquil setting, sleek design and light-drenched rooms make this a unique space and perfect for a family holiday. Rooms flow seamlessly together, while natural finishes and large windows and glass doors create a soothing effect. The open-plan lounge is all easy comfort with its beamed ceiling and white tones, while soft furnishings and modern artwork add bright splashes of colour. Sit and unwind on the huge sofa or, on chillier nights, cosy up in front of the wood burner.

From the lounge, wood laminate flooring sweeps through to the sleek kitchen, where you’ll find everything you need to prepare delicious meals. Serve casual meals at the breakfast table overlooking the garden, or for more sociable meals; there’s a 10-seater table in the breezy dining room. Four bedrooms are situated off from the living area and feature a mix of king, queen, and twin beds. All the bedrooms are awash with light, have plenty of wardrobe space and have fabulous garden doors which you can slide open to let the outside in. There are also five pristine bathrooms on this floor.

In the morning, step straight from your bed into the tropical garden and enjoy feeling the sun on your face. The garden is a delight and features a pristine lawn dotted with lush plants and shady trees. During the day, take a dip in the pool, relax on one of the sunbeds or enjoy a game of badminton on the grass. There’s also a barbeque area and a fire pit, so come evening, you can enjoy an al fresco meal and then sit and gaze at the stars. If you need to catch up on work, there’s even a handy workspace on the lower floor featuring two stylish bunk beds.

Villa Chafe is located in a quiet, tree-lined area and is within walking distance of the town centre with its cafes, restaurants and supermarkets. It’s also a 10-minute drive to the beach.

Villa Chafe is located in the Minho region, the province north of Porto. Famed for its beauty and tranquillity, the area boasts river valleys, forested hillsides and long, sandy beaches. Amorosa Beach is just a 10-minute drive from the property and is wide and clean, with a beautiful view of Viana city in the distance. It’s a good spot for a morning walk along the shore while children will love exploring the rock pools. Surfers can ride the waves here or at neighbouring Praia do Cabedolo, where you’ll also find a boardwalk with a restaurant and snack bar. From Praia do Cabedolo, you can catch a ferry over to the vibrant coastal resort, Viana do Castelo (or make the 15-minute drive from the property).

With good waves on either side of the harbour, it’s a popular spot with surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers, but away from the shoreline, the town, with its historic centre and riverfront setting, is also worth a visit. Stroll through the old quarter and admire the Manueline manors and rococo palaces that line the narrow streets, or climb Viana’s 228-metre hill and enjoy a picnic among the trees. Once here, be sure to explore the neo-Byzantine Santa Luzia church. Those with a head for heights can even climb the narrow staircase to the dome’s top, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the coast and Lima valley.

Also worth a visit is the town of Barcelos (25 minutes). It’s one of the prettiest places in the north of Portugal and famous for its pottery. Be sure to visit on Thursday when the town’s vast square hosts a lively market, and you can pick up everything from crafts to clothing and a brightly-painted clay Barcelos Cockerel (a symbol of Portugal).

For more outdoor activities, head to the pretty town of Ponte de Lima, a 25-minute drive inland. Situated on the River Lima, you can hire kayaks and explore the town from the river, while in the surrounding Serra d’Arga hills, you can enjoy mountain biking and hiking trails. The town also boasts a Roman-built stone bridge, cobbled streets, centuries-old mansions and beautiful gardens. While here, be sure to stop in the main square and enjoy a glass of the locally produced Vinho Verde while soaking up the town’s medieval atmosphere.

ABOUT MINHO

The areas of Minho extend from the Spanish border in the north, south to Porto and east to the mountains of Vila Real. It is a green and fertile area of rolling hills encompassing the great rivers Minho, Lima and Douro, and the National Park of Peneda Geres. The countryside of the region is typified by long, sandy beaches bordered by pine woods, picturesque villages nestling among vine-covered hills, and historic towns such as Amarante, Guimaraes, Barcelos, Ponte de Lima, and Viana do Castelo.

The area encompasses a range of postcard-worthy landscapes and features that could almost be Portugal in microcosm: dreamy river scenes, high mountains, rolling vineyards, beautiful historic towns, dramatic Atlantic beaches, ancient religious foundations and mysterious archaeological sites.

Then there's the bold, sharp and fruity Vinho Verde to consider. This young wine is fashioned from the fruit of kilometres of vineyards that wind along rivers, over foothills and into Minho mountain villages.

Children will love the spacious living areas and the twin bedrooms with direct access to the garden at Villa Chafe. There’s a satellite TV in the lounge so everyone can relax on the comfortable sofa and enjoy watching a film, while the lower ground floor is a superb space with twin bunk beds that kids will love kicking back in. But when the sun is shining, they will probably want to spend most of their time splashing in the pool, playing badminton on the lawn, or enjoying the garden swings. Older kids can also plug into the WiFi and relax on a sun lounger. A terrace and barbeque area means family meals can be enjoyed al fresco, and come evening, everyone can gather around the fire pit for a spot of stargazing.

For a day at the beach, grab your swimsuits (and wetsuits) and head to Amorosa Beach. It’s a 10-minute drive from the villa and is a good spot for rock pooling, surfing and playing in the dunes. If older children want to try their hand at windsurfing, head to neighbouring Praia do Cabedolo, where they can enjoy lessons at the windsurfing school. Afterwards, stop for ice cream or bite-to-eat at the beachside restaurant.

The Minho region features many Portuguese traditions, including the weekly market at Barcelos (25 minutes). Here children can browse the local handicrafts and spend their pocket money on brightly coloured Barcelos Cockerel. Also worth a visit is the pretty coastal town of Viana do Castelo (15 minutes). Kids will love flying over the town as they ride the funicular railway to the top of Viana’s 228-metre hill. Back in the town, further delights include the interactive chocolate museum. A fun and educational place; kids can learn about the whole chocolate-making process and even make a bar of chocolate of their own.

Any extra cleaning, laundry, maintenance and/or garbage disposal required will be charged against the security deposit.
