Well-located on the beautiful hillside of Arco Da Calhetta, on the southwest coast of Madeira, sits this perfectly modern, 2-bedroom villa.
Newly built, this one-level home is a welcoming space with unfussy décor, light tones, and colourful pictures on the walls. The breezy, open-plan living area is spacious, uncluttered and awash with natural light. It also has all the modern comforts you could ask for: soft furnishings, WiFi and air-conditioning throughout.
During the day you’ll want to slide open the huge glass doors and let the gentle tropical breeze waft in. The modern kitchen is well-equipped with modern appliances, including dishwasher and coffee maker, and opens onto a neat dining table where you can linger over a casual meal while soaking up the sea views, rolling mountainside and endless blue sky. Alternatively, spend a lazy morning relaxing on the sofa while planning your day’s agenda.
Leading off from the living space are two immaculate bedrooms featuring one double bed and two single beds. Whitewashed walls and swathes of natural light create a tranquil atmosphere while the floor-to-ceiling glass doors allow you to watch the sun rise over the ocean from the comfort of your bed. Each bedroom also has its own pristine bathroom with shower and easy access to the terrace.
While rooms are all comfortably sized, it is the outside that beckons from almost every corner of the house. Step onto the decked terrace and you’ll soon be mesmerised by the verdant mountains and vivid blue seawater. Equally blue is the swimming pool water where you can cool off during the day or simply relax on one of the shady sunbeds. There’s also a barbeque and outside table for alfresco dining.
Casa Solera is located on the hillside, in a quiet residential area surrounded by banana plantations and palm trees. It’s a 5-minute drive to the charming village of Arco da Calheta and is close to amenities including authentic Madeiran bars and restaurants. Madeira’s famous sandy beach, Praia da Calheta, is a 10-minute drive from the villa. Location
About the surrounding area of Casa SoleraCasa Solera is located on the verdant hillside of Arco Da Calheta on the sunny southwest coats of Madeira. From the villa, narrow roads lead to nearby poncho bars and traditional restaurants while the charming village is a mere 5-minute drive away. Surrounded by banana plantations and overlooking a dramatic coastline, the stunning landscape is the real draw card here and with a number of levada hiking trails in the Calheta region you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to exploring the island’s beauty. Immerse yourself in the scent of eucalyptus while walking the Calheta to Ponta do Pargo levada or enjoy the wild flowers and streams along the Calheta to Prazeres trail.
If you want to feel the sand between your toes, head to Calheta’s beautiful, family-friendly beach. It’s just over 10-minutes drive away and is the prefect place for a fun day out. Swim in the calm seawater and enjoy a bite to eat at one of the restaurants dotted along the pretty promenade. If you want to try your hand at water sports head to the marina where there’s everything from paragliding to scuba diving and windsurfing on offer. Or for an unforgettable experience book a deep sea fishing trip or dolphin spotting tour.
In the 15th century Madeira was famed for its sugar cane and today the Calheta region is one of the few areas that still produces it. Stop at Engenho da Calheta, the sugar cane museum in Calheta and learn about the production process. You’ll see how the cane syrup is turned into honey and rum, and afterwards you can sample a selection of rums for yourself.
For a more contemporary setting, head to the Centro das Artes Casa das Mudas. Perched on a cliff top, the museum is filled with post-modern art and offers up spectacular views of Calheta beach below.
If you head east from Calheta you’ll find more natural beauty at Cascata dos Anjos, a waterfall cascading off a cliff and raining onto the coastal road below. Drive through it or park up and enjoy the sensation of walking through nature’s very own shower.

THE REGION
Calheta, meaning ‘Small Cove’, is where many tourists flock to in order to indulge in beautiful man-made beaches and striking scenery.
This part of Madeira is formed of several municipalities, each with something unique and special to offer. Calheta Village is an ideal place to start especially if you enjoy a stiff drink! An old sugar cane factory still produces one of the world’s most respected white rums – Aguardente…perhaps you want to leave this part of your holiday till late in the evening!
Jardim do Mar is where you will find many of the locals on dawn patrol, taking to the waves and surfing. The waters can both be heavy and flat, making them ideal for abilities of surfer. Akaw!
For lovers of seafood, you should look no further than Paul do Mar. This is a village where most of the fisherman work out of, so you know you’ll be able to find the catch of the day here.
For those who have travelled to Madeira for its inland beauty, then look no further than Arco da Calheta and Prazeres. Within these locations you won’t only be able find some stunning hiking trails, but you’re also likely to stumble across some traditionally styled Parishes and unforgettable views.
ABOUT MADEIRA
The island of Madeira can be found south west of mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the island’s location, its is considered to have a Mediterranean climate that serves locals and visitors all year round – making it an ideal escape from reality at any point in the year.
What we love Madeira for is its seemingly ongoing festivals! Madeirans have found an excuse to celebrate most things; including film, their natural surroundings and key patron saints. This means that planning a visit during these days and even weeks of commemoration is well worth it (scroll down to see some key dates).
Madeira is divided into several municipals, each with a special offering to those who visit this island. Our favourite two communities are Funchal and Calheta and these are where you will find most of our beautiful villas.
Madeira’s landscape extends much more than a striking coastline. Make sure you pack some hiking boots and venture inland during your stay. With mountainous trails along Vereda do Arieiro, or more countryside appropriate paths like Levada do Risco and waterfall chasing treks like Levada do Caldeirao Verde – this archipelago has everything a keen outdoors person requires.
For those who enjoy either playing or watching sports, you’ll be happy to know Madeira offers so much selection. Madeira is also home to three notable football clubs, so if you’re visiting during the football season and want to see a good quality of football, you have every chance to. Porto Santo Golfe is the island’s renowned golf course. With an 18-hole course (Par 72) overlooking a Galapagos-like backdrop, golf enthusiasts will certainly want a ‘slice’ of the action! Surfers can access some great beaches like Jardim do Mar, Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha in order to find some swell. Or, if you’re simply looking to recline on a sun lounger and soak up some rays, whilst listening to crystal clear waves break as they hit the shores, you will find plenty of man-made beaches & Lidos created for your leisure!
With a superb climate, close proximity to the coastline, wonderful cuisine, charming locals and astonishing scenery – this is a fabulous holiday choice for families & friends.
But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Madeira, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesCasa Solera is a fantastic space for the whole family. Children will love the generously sized bedroom with 2 single beds, en-suite bathroom and terrace access. Perched on a hillside and surrounded by lush countryside, kids can spend the day splashing in the swimming pool, relaxing on a sun lounger and surfing the WiFi while a barbeque area and outdoor table means family meals can be enjoyed al fresco. Come evening, the terrace is the perfect place to watch the sun dissolve into the ocean before the stars light up the sky. There is also a satellite TV in the lounge so the whole family can gather on the comfortable sofa and enjoy watching a film.
If the kids want to feel the sand between their toes, grab sun cream and swimsuits and head to nearby Calheta for the day. Praia Calheta is one of the island’s few sandy beaches and it’s a pretty spot for a swim. The crystal clear waters are calm so it’s good for snorkelling and even little ones can safely splash here. Afterwards, enjoy an ice cream and refreshments at one of the many restaurants and snack bars dotted along the promenade.
For more outdoor beauty head east to Cascata dos Anjos, a waterfall that cascades off the cliffs onto the road below. Park up and let the children run through the water in their swimsuits, they’ll love getting drenched.
Further along the south coast is the spectacular skywalk at Cabo Girao. One of the highest cliffs in Europe, children with a head for heights can step out onto the glass platform and gasp at the 580m drop below. The platform is an unforgettable experience and offers up sweeping views of Funchal and its rugged coastline.
In Funchal itself there’s plenty more fun to be had including the cable car ride up the mountain to Monte, and the hair-raising toboggan ride back down.
Other family favourites include playing in the garden and parks, and visiting the museums including the popular Cristiano Ronaldo museum, CR7. Located on the waterfront, football fans can admire Madeira’s most famous son and marvel at his medals, trophies and signed shirts. On the waterfront you can also kick back and watch the ships pulling into the harbour or hop aboard a boat for a thrilling whale and dolphin spotting tour.
