Blue hues abound at two-bedroomed Villa Gennadi: from the classically Mediterranean shutters to the turquoise Aegean Sea in the distance and the crystal-clear waters of your private swimming pool. This charming cube-shaped villa on the Greek island of Rhodes is perfectly sized for small families or couples and is ideally placed for both a quiet, relaxing holiday and as a starting off point for exploring the island’s significant attractions, beautiful beaches and spectacular natural beauty.

This stone-built villa exudes traditional flair with its whitewashed walls and its paved outdoor terrace dotted with local plants and trees. The villa has two floors, and you can enjoy magnificent views over the southern coastline and the quaint village of Gennadi from your balcony or garden area below. On the ground floor, you’ll find the comfortable living room and dining area and a fully-equipped kitchen. Thoughtful extra facilities include a flat-screen TV and washing machine.

Upstairs are the two spacious bedrooms, both double, as well as two bathrooms so you won’t be fighting over the shower in the morning. All the rooms are decorated bright and modern in style with natural-coloured furnishings, and there are plenty of windows letting in the beautiful Greek sunshine. Enjoy breakfast on the indoor dining table before donning your swim gear and finding your prime sunbathing or relaxing spot in the shade. With loungers and chairs dotted outside and an extended canopy-style section providing cover, you won’t have any trouble finding either.

When you can bring yourself to leave the comfort of Villa Gennadi (we’ll forgive you if you don’t), there are cafes, taverns and a supermarket, all within 650 yards. Gennadi’s Blue Flag-flying beach, arguabl

Villa Gennadi overlooks the beautiful village of Gennadi on the southeast coast of Rhodes. This peaceful spot boasts a Blue Flag beach, argued to be one of the best on the island. The pebble and sand stretches along the coast for around 6km, so you won’t have any trouble choosing a sunbathing spot. Whether you’re taking a cooling dip, playing with the kids or relaxing with your favourite holiday read, there are beachfront bars and seafood stands to keep you going through the day.

In Gennadi centre, you’ll find plenty more places to grab a drink or a bite to eat. Most of the eateries are family-friendly traditional-style tavernas. You’re likely to be met with a delicious menu of home-cooked Greek dishes, like moussaka, tzatziki and skewered meat souvlaki. Take-homes for family and friends are easy to come by too with souvenir shops all around the village. By night, Gennadi is known for its beach parties, where you can dance on the sand around romantic campfires.

When you fancy a heavier hit of retail therapy, you can drive about half an hour to Lindos. The former fishing village turned pretty town hides jewellers, handicraft shops and boutiques among its network of narrow lanes. Look out for the island’s famous decorative plates or fresh local produce for cooking up a storm back at the villa. The town is also renowned for its stunning clifftop acropolis. There you can immerse yourself in ancient history at the monumental temple, castle and church.

For exploring further still, the cosmopolitan centre of Rhodes with its old and new town is a must. The old town is one of the best-preserved Medieval towns in Europe. You can walk along the narrow paved streets, visit the impressive Venetian Castle and the Byzantine churches or stroll around the charming old port. There’s also a museum there with fascinating artefacts. For another fun day trip, there’s the Valley of Butterflies – a lush canyon that’s home to beautiful butterfly species.

The Island/Getting There

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It’s got a lot of history as it’s been invaded a lot by the Persians, Carians, Ottomans, Italians, and Germans.

Average temperatures go from 20’c in April up to 30’c in July/ August and down to 20’c in November. With an average of 85 rainy days a year they get sunshine for around 280 days.

The island is 90km long with Rhodes town at the northern tip. The airport (Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras") is also in the North (15km from Rhodes Town). Charter flights and Easyjet operate direct from the UK all season and out of season (Nov-March) you’d need to fly via Athens.

The Acropolis – The Acropolis that sits high above the town of Lindos is absolutely amazing and is a must see if you’re looking for some of the best views in all of Rhodes. One thing I should mention is that the climb up to the acropolis requires you to be somewhat active and able to climb stairs, lots of them. The trail begins through town and slowly but surely starts to get steeper as you climb the hill towards the acropolis. Once there, you’re rewarded with historical buildings dating back to 300 BC. Our Villa Corteau sit just underneath the ruins.

Rhodes has over 40 beaches, here are a few:

  • Anthony Quinn’s Bay – Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the most beautiful bays. The bay is located 17km (10 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and offers some incredible photo opportunities to say the least.
  • The beach at Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the best beaches in Rhodes. Get there early if you want to snag a sunbed and umbrella and enjoy wading around the bright blue and green water. Amazing!
  • For the best views of Anthony Quinn’s Bay from above, head on up to the windy road that leads up the hill just north of the bay and you’ll find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the virtually 180 degree views of Rhodes and its coastline.
  • Tsambika Beach (or Tsampika) –  Tsampika beach is located 30km (18 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and is a great place to spend the day in the sun.  Note: Beware there is a small section where nudists congregate on Tsampika beach
  • Lakido Beach – Just opposite Anthony Quinn’s Bay is Lakido beach. It’s literally 3 minutes walking distance from Anthony Quinn’s bay so visiting both beaches in a day is totally doable. As a matter of fact, I would highly recommend visiting both if you get the chance
  • Faliraki Beach – One of the most popular tourist spots on the island of Rhodes. It was known for 18-30’s holiday in the 90-2000’s but I don’t think there is that market so much now. It is quite commercialised now there are water sports and a few diving schools.

How to reach Rhodes island

There are two ways to reach Rhodes Island: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane: If you don’t want to lose time you can fly to Rhodes (RHO) from Athens. The flight lasts 1 hour. Many direct flights also operate from many European countries, so it will not be difficult to arrive there.

By ferry: If you choose to travel from Piraeus to Rhodes with a ferry, it will surely take you much longer but travelling with a ferry in the summer nights can be pretty enticing! The port of Rhodes is located in the southern part of the island and offers bus services to the town centre. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

The villa itself has a private swimming pool and is only a short walk from the nearest sandy beach where kids young and old can have fun swimming, snorkelling or playing on the sand. For a fun family-friendly day trip, you can drive around 30 minutes to Lindos. There you’ll find a choice of beaches and opportunities to take part in water sports. You can jump on a glass-bottomed boat and explore the coastline, with some tours stopping for lunch and a swim. Lindos is also renowned for its ancient sites including lovely whitewashed churches and the ruined acropolis on top of the hill.

In Rhodes, about an hour away, kids can explore the Medieval Old Town with lots of ancient sites and a museum. The Valley of the Butterflies nearby is also a fun and educational day out. There you’ll find a lush green canyon that’s home to millions of beautiful butterflies. There are golf courses nearby too, or for water parks, you can drive 20 minutes South of Rhodes to nearby Faliraki.
