It’s a tale of two-holiday homes when you vacation at Villas Kastraki, on the west coast of the Cycladic island of Naxos, in the heart of the Greek Aegean Sea. This unique property is made up of two separate villas, with a shared terrace and centrepiece swimming pool, ideal for a couple of families, or a group of friends sharing. Each two-storey villa has its own independent entrance, living area and two bedrooms, and together can accommodate up to twelve guests. The villas command the most stunning sea views, overlooking the azure waters of the Aegean Sea.

The property is located almost on the beachfront, a short walk down a ready-made path will take you to a secluded sandy shore, with immediate access to the crystal-clear sea. Villa Kastraki is built in the iconic Cycladic style, with sun-reflecting whitewashed exteriors, surrounded by local stone walls. The villa comes with private parking, and complimentary air conditioning and Wi-Fi throughout. The interiors have a classic Mediterranean beachfront villa vibe, with cool stone tiled floors, furnished with contemporary pieces, and decorated in a palette of crisp, clean white with marine blue highlights.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted at the main entrance and welcomed to your light and airy holiday home from home. Both properties mirror each other in every respect. Enter the villas at ground floor level, where you will find an open plan living space, with double doors and billowing white curtains, which open onto the pool terrace. Each villa has a large white L-shaped sofa, coffee tables, and a flat-screen television. The adjacent kitchen is fully equipped with all the latest appliances you will need to cater for your holiday, including a family-sized fridge freezer, and that must-have morning coffee maker. There is a breakfast bar and stool set for four, perfect for a meeting in the morning to discuss the day’s plans. A handy guest WC completes the ground floor. Take the Cycladic staircase to the first floor, where there are two stylish double bedrooms. The master bedroom has a double bed, and fitted wardrobes, with French doors that open onto a panoramic sea view balcony, with a Jacuzzi bath, where you can sip champagne, and watch the sunset. The second bedroom has twin beds, a wardrobe, and mountain views. There is a shared modern white marble bathroom with a walk-in shower, hand basin, and WC, as well as complimentary toiletries.

Access the tiled terrace from the ground floor living space, where there is a step-entry swimming pool, surrounded by mesh sun loungers, with strategically positioned sea views. Cool off under the poolside shower, then take an afternoon nap in the shaded soft seating spot. Take the path down to the beach and have a dip in the Aegean Sea. Villas Kastraki can be found overlooking Kastraki Beach, on the west coast of the Greek island of Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades islands, in the heart of the Aegean Sea. You can get to Naxos via Athens, followed by a forty-five minute flight to the local airport, and then a twenty-minute drive across the island to your destination. You can also take a ferry from the ports of Athens, or island hop from Santorini, Paros, Milos, Ios, or Mykonos. The villa is near supermarkets for your holiday provisions, and local cafes, bars, and restaurants are within walking distance. The nearest beach is almost on your doorstep, take the path from Villa Kastraki straight onto a secluded sandy beach, surrounded by sand dunes and cedar trees, and the crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea.

Naxos is famous for its water sports, most especially kite and windsurfing, with seven major clubs around the coastline, the Meltemi north wind effect makes it the most perfect conditions. The villa is near the unspoilt Glyfada sandy beach, with its crystal clear waters, and kitesurfing club Other great beaches include; Agia Anna for its sea caves and tavernas, Aliko with four beaches and a backdrop of cedar forests, Mikri Vigla for excellent water sports, Agios Prokopios for its white sand, and promenade populated with restaurants, and the most popular Plaka, with four kilometres of organised sun loungers and shady parasols. Go sixteen kilometres north to Naxos town, known locally as Chora, a lively commercial centre, with a port, whitewashed houses, and original Venetian architecture. Visit the thirteenth-century castle, the Archeological and Venetian Museums, and the landmark Portara, constructed in 530BC as the original entrance to the unbuilt Temple of Apollo, best seen at sunset.

Highly recommended is a visit to a local village, of which there are fifty on the island. See traditional village life in the mountaintop setting of Koronas, and the Church of Panagia Agrokiliotissa. Visit Chalki (Halki), once the capital of the island, admire the grandeur of the neoclassical Venetian homes and towers, and walk the cobbled streets as you shop for souvenirs. Make sure you visit the Vallindra Distillery where they make Kitron, the island’s famous lemon liqueur, sample some, and take a bottle home with you. For something a bit sportier, the island offers hiking and cycling tours, where you can discover the local flora and fauna, mountain biking and horseback riding, swimming, snorkelling, and scuba diving. For the daredevils, Naxos is renowned for its cliff diving. For something more cultural, there is the seventh-century BC Statue of Kouros sculptures, the sixth-century AD Temple of Demeter, the Crispi Tower Byzantine Museum, and the Cycladia Cultural Centre at Damala, which hosts events throughout the season. Seek solace and find tranquillity in the many Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries that can be found all over the island, with their ornate interiors and Byzantine icons.

No trip to Naxos is complete without a boat trip, island hop, swim and snorkel in secret coves and hidden bays, dine aboard, then sail into harbour at sunset. After all that, wind down with a wine tour of one of the local vineyards, and sample their wares. Settle down for an evening under the stars at the open-air cinema or enjoy traditional Greek dishes in a family-run taverna.

Region

As you sail into the island, be in awe of the Portara of Naxos, the vast marble gate to the Temple of Apollo. Crowds gather at the iconic emblem to admire the sun setting in this spectacular setting.

It’s not just Naxos’ rich history which attracts visitors to the largest island in the Cyclades. It may be relatively less known compared to Mykonos and Santorini yet those in the know come to Naxos for its glorious beaches, verdant landscapes and charming villages. Ferries arrive into Naxos town from Mykonos, Santorini, Piraeus and Rafina or you can fly into Naxos Airport from Athens.

Starting off in Naxos town, potter around the picturesque streets and soak up its rich heritage as you catch idyllic glimpses of the sea. Narrow lanes of bougainvillea-clad houses wind through the Kastro district towards the fortified Venetian castle. Get lost in the old town with its arched pathways, little shops and pretty cafes, spotting sleepy cats as you explore, and be enchanted by the authentic Greek charm all around you. As the evening approaches the town comes to life with its restaurants and cocktail bars, many with rooftop terraces and great views.

The sandy beaches near Naxos town are much loved by tourists and locals alike – hire summer sunbeds and parasols at the likes of Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna and make the most of the turquoise-coloured Aegean for snorkelling and diving. Seek slightly quieter shores further south as you come across the fine white sand of Plaka Beach and the more remote Hawaii Beach protected by rocks. Meanwhile, Mikri Vigla, also on the western coast, is popular with watersport enthusiasts (kite-surfing, windsurfing).

Then there’s the traditional villages dotted across the island amongst olive groves, citrus orchards, byzantine churches and mountains. Chalkio is often referred to as the most beautiful with its flower-filled lanes, white-washed houses, art galleries and traditional tavernas serving locally sourced dishes. Apeiranthos is another gem of Naxos with its unique architecture, marble alleys and museums alongside locally-owned shops and shady café terraces.

In spring and autumn, follow hiking trails between coast, mountains and historic villages, passing wild flowers, herbs, olive trees and ancient ruins, a fine way to appreciate Naxos’ incredible nature. Horse-riding excursions can be arranged with mountain and sea views (as well as donkey rides for younger guests) or explore the island by boat with day trips to visit the sea caves, rocky shores and even the neighbouring islands of Paros and Antiparos.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

There are lots of things for your kids to do and see when you holiday on the island of Naxos. Starting with the villa, there is your own private swimming pool, and as there are no set hours they can play and splash all day. The nearest beach is almost on your doorstep, with its soft white sand and easy entry to crystal clear waters.

The Naxos coastline is populated with forty-five fabulous beaches, those especially recommended for children are; nearby Glyfada, a holiday hot spot, Agios Prokopios, with its clear shallow waters, Agia Anna is very popular with soft golden sand and organised amenities, Agios St George is also organised, and has a wide range of kid-friendly water sports, whilst Plaka has an excellent selection of cafes and restaurants. A trip to the capital Chora will delight your children, with its narrow alleyways, castles and cats, and the walk to Portara Temple of Apollo gates is a great introduction to architecture. Visit the Olive Museum at Eggares, with the oldest olive mill in Naxos, dating from the 1800s, see how the olives are made into oil, have a tasting, and take some home. Naxos is famous for its marble production, take your children to a workshop, where they are taught to carve marble under an old olive tree, then taken to a quarry and the marble village of Apeiranthos.

Kids love a day out at Chalki, the original capital of Naxos, navigating the cobbled streets with its Venetian architecture, and then dining at the Rotunda restaurant, with its three hundred and sixty-degree views of the island. Your children can learn the art of cheesemaking at the Cheese Farm, where they can feed the animals, drive a tractor, and then sample the produce at lunch. There are also Greek pottery, cookery, and bee-keeping courses, that include a visit to a village that makes ice cream by hand. For some family fun in the sun, there is the Naxos Waterpark in Stelida, with water slides, different-sized pools, and sunbathing decks. Go Go-Kart racing in the Kartodrome at Galandandros, before an evening at the Bowling Café, where they can test their ten-pin strike skills. Get them active with hiking and cycling trails to discover the local flora and fauna, horseback riding through the countryside, or kite and windsurfing lessons at the local Glyfada club.

All aboard for a family day out at sea, join a group tour and go island hopping, or charter your own yacht to swim and snorkel in the Aegean Sea, sunbathe on deck, try their balancing skills at stand up paddle boarding, and dine on Greek meze and freshly caught fish. In the evening enjoy a traditional meal in a local family-run taverna, before watching the stars under the stars in their favourite movie at the alfresco open-air cinema.
