Escape the madding crowd with a stay in Villa Ophronia, perched on a hillside in peaceful surroundings, overlooking the beautiful Elia bay on the south coast of  Mykonos, one of the Cyclades islands in the heart of the Aegean Sea. This breathtaking property is built on five thousand six hundred square metres of private land and is surrounded by the natural flora and fauna of the island. The villa commands a sweeping one hundred and eighty degree panoramic view of Elia, Agrari, and Super Paradise beaches, and rewards the guest with a sense of privacy and tranquillity. This incredible villa has ten bedrooms and ten bathrooms and can accommodate up to twenty eight guests in some comfort and style, ideal for a fabulous family celebration, or a friends’ get together vacation.

Villa Ophronia exceeds your expectations with a private staff of two to cater for your every wish. The villa comes with parking spaces for up to twenty cars and includes complimentary air conditioning and Wi-Fi throughout. The property is constructed out of classic whitewashed Cycladic stone, and contrasting walls made from locally hewn rocks. The interiors are modern minimalism, combining contemporary furnishings with traditional beach house vibes, and are decorated in an elegant colour palette of shades of grey and crisp clean whites. Situated eighty metres above sea level, the property is in tiered terraces with a lagoon-like sea view one hundred and forty square metre private pool as the central attraction.

The living space is light and airy, with floor-to-ceiling doors that give access to the pool terrace. The seating area is a combination of dark grey sofas and armchairs, wooden coffee tables, and a white bookcase, housing a flat-screen satellite television, a Blu-Ray player, and a CD sound system. The adjacent large stainless steel and white kitchen is fully equipped with everything you will need to cater for your holiday, including a built-in oven, hob and microwave, a family-size fridge freezer, and that must-have morning coffee maker. In the kitchen, there is an informal wood and white dining table to seat six. The ten bedrooms are arranged over four different areas, all of which are exquisitely furnished, with air conditioning, and en suite bathrooms with walk-in showers. The first floor has two double bedrooms with king-size beds, that each sleep two people. The ground floor has two spacious bedrooms, both with king-size beds, and sofa beds, to sleep up to four people each; and a separate twin room with single beds to sleep up to two people. The basement has two bedrooms with king-size beds, that sleep two people each; and one bedroom with two king-size beds, that sleeps four. The pool room has one bedroom with two king-size beds that sleep four, and one bedroom with one king-size bed that sleeps two. A separate maid’s room completes the accommodation. Two of the bedrooms benefit from their own private terraces, perfect for admiring the sunrise in the morning, or sipping cocktails as the sun sets.

The tiered terrace is the star of the show, and the one hundred and forty square metre lagoon style infinity pool is its centrepiece. The pool is surrounded by modern grey mesh sun loungers, strategically positioned for maximum sea views. The adjacent one hundred and forty square metre sail-shaped pergola is home to a comfy grey cushioned soft seating area, ideal for seeking some shade from the afternoon sun and catching up with this year’s bestseller. Spend the day lazing in the hammock, taking morning coffee at one of the many seating spots, before meeting for sundowner cocktails on the terrace. Eat alfresco at the outside undercover dining table, served with local delicacies grilled on the barbeque.

What you should know…

  • Villa Ophronia is unusually wheelchair accessible, a rare beast in the villa market
  • The villa is also both pet friendly and allows smoking, again quite unusual
  • The bedroom configuration is ten bedrooms with twelve beds that sleep twenty four people, and a further two sofa beds, that can accommodate a further four at extra expense
  • The villa is only eight metres above sea level, but the nearest beach is a kilometre walk away, great exercise though, and through the Mykonos countryside

Villa Ophronia is located on the southern tip of the island of Mykonos, situated on the hillside, eighty metres above sea level, overlooking Elia bay and the beach. The exclusive island of Mykonos measures only ten kilometres long by fifteen kilometres wide, so wherever you want to go it’s only a short drive away. The villa is just two kilometres from Mykonos airport, which is served by both local and international flight operators. If you are island hopping, then nearby Naxos and Syros also have their own airports. The new port of Mykonos is a hub of activity for those landing and departing from island hopping ferries, or super yachts cruising the Aegean, and is a quick twenty five minute drive to the villa.

The villa is near to the resort town of Elia on the south coast, famous for its white sandy beaches, and stylish seafront restaurants. Agrari is the nearest beach, offering a selection of water sports, a playground, and cafes and bars, and the south coast beaches have calmer sea waters. Near the villa there is a tennis court, fitness centre, and fishing opportunities. You’ll be surprised by how much there is to see and do on this small but oh so charming island. The coastline is populated by many beautiful golden sandy beaches, take your pick from nearby nudist Elia beach, to the family-friendly favourite of Plays Gialos Beach, or party, party, party all day long on Super Paradise Beach, with its crystal clear waters, restaurants, bars, and clubs with resident DJs, there’s something for everyone on the island of Mykonos. During daylight hours play penance in one of the eight hundred churches that populate the island, most notably Paraportiani, which is a unique construction combining four styles of architecture.

Take a visit to Mykonos town, known locally at Chora, and only four kilometres from the villa. Here you can wander the maze of streets with the colourful Cycladic houses, and do some serious designer label shopping in one of the many luxury boutiques. Then take a table at a seafront restaurant and enjoy a dish of freshly caught seafood, whilst sipping ouzo and watching the beautiful people pass by. Find out the island’s history and culture at the Archaeological Museum, the Folk Museum, and the Maritime Museum, then go out of town to Lena’s House to discover how the original islanders lived. Take a walk up to the landmark windmills, known as Kato Mili, where once the wheat was ground to make bread, and is now a mini museum and residencies. Walk along the waterfront to Little Venice, where original merchant houses overhang the sea, and is now home to cafes, bars, restaurants and galleries, best enjoyed at sunset with a retsina or two. Admire the Armenistis lighthouse, still fully functioning and an essential asset of Mykonos’ maritime history.

No visit to Mykonos is complete without a day at sea, join a catamaran jolly and snorkel in the sea, or if you’re feeling flush, charter your own yacht and discover secret coves and hidden bays and beaches. For the romantics, nothing beats a sunset cruise, cocktail in hand as the sun sets over the horizon. Further afield the uninhabited island of Delos is well worth a visit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the birthplace of Zeus and Leto, go with a group or arrange your own private tour.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Your kids will just love a holiday on the island of Mykonos, and there’s a surprising number of fun and family activities to keep them amused. Starting with Villa Ophronia’s private lagoon-like swimming pool, where there are no set hours they can play and splash all day. Agrari is the nearest family-friendly sandy beach, just one kilometre to easy access to the cool calm waters of the Aegean Sea. Agrari Beach also offers water sports for your older children, and a playground for the younger ones, as well as a café and bar. The coastline of Mykonos is dotted with family-friendly beaches, many of which you can book ahead, the villa is on the south coast, which has much calmer seas, and is safer for children.

We can recommend Agios Ioannis beach with an infrastructure with pre-bookable sun loungers and parasols, cafes and calm seas, Kalo Livadi in the south east has views over the Cyclades archipelago and the island of Naxos, and Panormos Beach offers a great restaurant with giant bean bags. Your younger children may enjoy a visit to the Animal Organic Farm, where they can pet and feed the livestock, harvest seasonal crops, enjoy some time in nature, and keep themselves busy with some traditional farming tasks. Whilst your older kids could take a guided hike over the island’s landscape, exploring the local flora and fauna, ending with a cooling dip in the sea.

All of the family will love a day at sea, whether it’s island hopping aboard a shared Catamaran, or chartering a yacht and discovering secret coves and hidden bays and beaches, and swimming and snorkelling spotting friendly fish. Keep the creatives happy with a mosaic workshop, or a family cooking lesson with a local chef teaching you all to make traditional Greek meze. A trip to Mykonos town is a must, wander the winding streets, shop for souvenirs, meet Petros the Pelican, the mascot of Mykonos, and then enjoy a family-friendly meal in a seaside taverna.

For your intellectually curious offspring, there’s the Archaeological Museum, the Maritime Museum, the Folk Museum, and Lena’s House, all within walking distance of the old town. A short walk along the seafront will take you to Little Venice, a pirate’s paradise of a maze of streets with colourful houses overhanging the sea. Tilt at windmills at the top of the town, the landmark of Mykonos, where they used to grind wheat and make bread for the islanders, now a mini museum and some are even residencies. The Lighthouse of Mykonos is seven kilometres northeast of the town, and well worth a visit for the stunning sea views to the island of Tinos, and to watch the boats arriving and departing from the harbour. Who would have thought it, but Mykonos is home to the best Go-Kart track in Greece, open every day from April until November from 10 am until 2 am, which should keep them occupied all day.

For those who prefer a more natural form of transport, they can mount a pony and go horseback riding in Ano Mera. If you want to venture further afield, a trip to the adjacent island of uninhabited Delos is a delight, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the birthplace of Zeus and Leto, Apollo and Artemis, cross the water by private charter or a shared tour for a fabulous family day out.
