Mas de la Durance is a charming 5-bedroom holiday home with an artistic ambience close to Cavaillon, a great location for exploring idyllic villages and captivating landscapes of both the Luberon and Les Alpilles in this beautiful part of Provence.

The owner has put all his love into renovating this old farmhouse over the past few years and has added some of his own personality from the brightly coloured shutters overlooking the swimming pool to the pieces of unique art dotted across the villa. The ground floor is especially inviting with its vaulted ceilinged lounge and characterful kitchen-diner whilst upstairs you will find four simple but pretty bedrooms, each with their own en suite – the house also benefits from underfloor cooling. Furthermore, an annexe bedroom offers extra space allowing Mas de la Durance to sleep up to 12 guests. An extra guest can also sleep on the mezzanine level of one of the ground floor bedrooms.

Outside, a gorgeous swimming pool can be found alongside sun-loungers and ample space for al-fresco dining whilst a relaxing shaded terrace allows you to enjoy summer evenings together with a good bottle of Luberon wine.

It’s a great location as well – there’s a boulangerie within 2km and supermarkets a little further whilst the town of Cavaillon is less than a 10-minute drive away, famed for its rich heritage, bustling weekly market and annual melon festival. Furthermore, the enchanting town of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is only 13km by car, a must on a Sunday morning with its atmospheric brocante.

The wonderful villages of the Luberon are waiting to be explored – Gordes, Ménerbes and Oppède le Vieux are around a 20-minute drive away. Heading west, the olive groves and forested hills of Les Alpilles are also easily reached with gems such as Saint-Rémy and Les Baux-de-Provence perfect for leisurely days out. Not to mention the endless opportunities for walking, hiking or cycling past orchards, woodland, lavender fields, vineyards and other iconic scenes of Provence.

In the Vaucluse department of Provence, only 4km from Cavaillon, Mas de la Durance is located just off a country lane in a rural setting surrounded by fields and farmland so typical of this area.

The local boulangerie is in a village around 1.7km away whilst several supermarkets can be found within a short drive, both close to the village and around Cavaillon. The old part of the local village is home to a much-loved restaurant (usually open Tuesday to Saturday, best to book ahead) and some lovely walks as well as an open-air theatre made from a former stone quarry – look out for concerts in the height of the summer.

Cavaillon is an interesting town with a rich and diverse heritage, famed for its summer melons which are sold at markets across the region, including Cavaillon’s bustling market on a Monday morning. Furthermore, the town’s melon festival usually takes place the weekend before Bastille Day in July.

You are also well placed for visiting some of France’s prettiest villages across the Luberon including Van Gogh’s beloved Gordes (16km) and gorgeous Ménerbes (14km), both officially classified as two of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Oppède le Vieux, Lacoste and Bonnieux are other gems to explore, as is Lourmarin (31km), a charming place where you can follow the footsteps of Albert Camus.

The Luberon is also wonderful for long walks and hikes through orchards, woodland and vineyards, not to mention a number of wine-tasting opportunities. Keen cyclists will appreciate the many trails including the popular La Véloroute du Calavon which passes close by and continues all the way towards Apt and Saint-Martin-de-Castillon.

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (13km) is a picture-perfect town with its waterwheels, antique shops and fantastic Sunday morning brocante. Water lovers should hire canoes or kayaks to sail down the Sorgue from Fontaine-de-Vaucluse or look out for some superb walks as well as golf and tree-top adventures.

Heading west, the artistic town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (24km) is a joy to explore, especially on a Wednesday morning when the market takes place. Les Baux-de-Provence (33km) is yet another one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of Les Alpilles.

The historic sites of Avignon (40km) can also be reached for a brilliant day out or you may prefer to venture south to the famous University town of Aix-en-Provence (53km), perhaps passing some of the scenery that inspired the great artist, Paul Cézanne.
