Overview
Maison Garnier is a stunning villa a short distance from one of the Luberon Valley's most majestic and frequently photographed villages: Gordes.
It belongs to a cluster of traditional villages nestled in the countryside of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in south-eastern France, known for its rich and varied landscape full of small market towns, rolling lavender hills and peaceful nature.
The villa itself offers an abundance of space both inside and out, with elegant touches throughout. Indoors, three spacious bedrooms sleep up to 6 guests – an ideal holiday home for family reunions and groups of friends. Lovers of traditional interior design will love sleeping in the wallpapered bedrooms, where floral bedding and wooden chairs turned into cosy nightstands add the final touch. Downstairs, a soothing medley of pale tones is brought to life with colourful oil paintings, vintage furniture and collectables. The living room is bright and airy thanks to the large doors spilling out to the private terrace and pool – and we encourage you to leave them open on hot summer days to take full advantage of the space.
Outside, a beautiful terrace with panoramic views over the Luberon Valley awaits. Lounge on a sunbed by the stone pool edged with lavender or grab a front-row seat by the table casually tucked away in the shade of a nearby tree – great for enjoying a glass of Côtes de Provence while watching the sun slip behind the horizon. Many Mediterranean shrubs and olive and fruit trees grow in the 3.7-acre garden, which extends to the rear and back of the property – and you can even pick your own cherries during the early summer months. Once serving as an agricultural land and therefore built on multiple levels, the garden is perfect for exploring local fauna and flora and even has two stone shepherd’s huts adding to its farmhouse charm.
Should you tire of lazy afternoons, Gordes is only 1km away. It has all the local amenities you need for a comfortable stay – think weekday markets, cafés, restaurants and charming little corners that look like postcards.
Discover the undulating landscapes of Provence by bike, hiking or horseback, passing vineyards, wineries, farms, orchards and rivers or go village hopping from one idyllic village to another, always admiring some of the most enchanting scenery of southern France.
Larger cities such as Avignon and Aix-en-Provence are also a driving distance away, each brimming with the same Provençal charm as the hilltop villages nearby, yet more lively and fun.

Location
About the surrounding area of Maison GarnierBuilt on the foothills of the Monts of Vaucluse, Gordes is a small hilltop village facing the Luberon Valley. With an array of winding streets, cafés and patisseries, it’s an idyllic holiday destination with postcard-worthy views. When in Gordes, you should visit the Château de Gordes, a castle which showcases a beautiful link between the architecture of the Middle Ages and the golden Renaissance period. If you love shopping, you’ll love the little winding streets lined with boutiques and artisanal stalls selling a mixture of French crafts, high-end gifts and local souvenirs such as handmade soaps and fragrances, mainly made from the lavender that grows all around.
Every Tuesday, you can also wander around the Gordes market, which takes place in the shadow of the magnificent Gordes castle. Here you can wander around the stalls and pick up everything from local cheeses, condiments and fresh fruit to art while hiding from the Provençal sunshine in the shadow of magnificent Renaissance architecture. If you need more ingredients to cook meals back at the villa, you can finish ticking off your grocery list in the local supermarket.
Other beguiling hilltop medieval villages in the Luberon Valley include Goult, Bonnieux, Lourmarin and Isle-Sur-La-Sorgue. Notably, Isle-Sur-La-Sorgue has been dubbed the Venice of Provence due to its many canals built on the Sorgue River. On warm days, you can sit by the riverbank and dangle your feet above the water or admire the water wheels at the centre of the river, some of which have been there for centuries.
The opportunities for a wholesome holiday break here are limitless, but if you’re craving a change of scenery, head to one of the bigger cities, such as Avignon or Marseille.
Avignon is just 40km away and boasts numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites worth your while. The most famous one is undeniably the Papal Palace – a historical palace and one of Europe's largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings. On warm days, you can walk around the Avignon Bridge running over the river Rhône or head to the city’s central square to wine and dine in one of the many charismatic restaurants and typical French bistros spilling onto the cobbled sidewalks.
A scenic drive through the Provençal countryside will take you to an azure-blue coastline, with cities such as Marseille, only 94km away. Visit one of the many nearby beaches to work on your holiday tan, or head to town for a little stroll through the Old Port, where fishmongers sell their daily catch right off their boats. With over 300 sunny days per year, you can expect that Marseille’s culture nightlife focuses on open-air venues and terraces with sweeping coastal views, so consider staying until sunset to appreciate the local atmosphere fully.

Region
With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.
Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.
Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.
To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.
Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.
The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesIf discovering Gordes’ views and winding streets becomes too familiar, take young adventurers to one of the nearby natural parks and woodlands, like the Parc Naturel Regional des Alpilles. Full of walking paths suitable for all levels, it’s an excellent idea for restless little ones who wish to tire their legs by running through vineyards, meadows and hills.
Just a stone’s throw away from the property, you can find the Les Gorges de Véroncle hiking area with walking paths snaking through unique rock formations. Another excellent sightseeing trip near Gordes is the Caves of the Palais Saint Firmin, a village with mills and silos carved out in caves under the ground.
In the case of bad weather, Avignon’s museums will be a fantastic option for immersing yourself in the local culture and teaching youngsters about French art and history. Peek inside the majestic Pope’s Palace, admire the architecture at Musée du Petit Palais or head to one of the oldest museums in the city housed in a spectacular 18th-century hotel, Musée Calvet.
Aix-en-Provence is another city offering plenty of family-friendly activities. Parks such as Parc Jourdan, Parc de la Torse and Parc Rambot look as if they were designed for a classic French picnic, and all have play areas where kids can make new friends and roam free without parents having to get up from the comfort of their picnic blanket.

An idyllic spot
The photos don't do this lovely villa justice. There is a lovely dining room if you decide to eat indoors and very comfy sofas in the big lounge for relaxing. The owners had thoughtfully filled the fridge with an array of lovely drinks and gave us an enormous basket of freshly picked cherries. The view from the patio and pool is just stunning. The weather was warm, not hot (end May) but we did use the pool even though it was a little chilly. However Richard said it will be heated next year. It's the perfect location - a ten-minute stroll up the road into Gordes to one of the boulangeries for breakfast. From the villa there are numerous trips from ten minutes to farther afield be it to other beautiful hill-top villages, the cities of Aix, Avignon, Arles etc or up into the mountains or even the sea. We were a party of six (my husband and I, our two grown-up children and their partners). Two of the bedrooms had ensuites (the master bedroom and bathroom was particularly nice although without a loo) so we grabbed that and there was a loo and basin just adjacent. Our daughter and partner had to use our shower but it was not a problem for us. Everything was meticulously clean. We really didn't want to leave and if given the chance would definitely return.

Tranquility in the Luberon
We had a wonderful stay during our summer holidays last year. The Villa sits in a fantastic location on the hillside with magnificent views of the valley and up to the town of Gordes. A perfect launch pad for exploring the region. One of our lasting memories was watching hot air balloons sail across the Luberon whilst we had an early breakfast on a crisp, sunny and quiet morning. The host was particularly helpful with providing driving directions to the villa and provided a warm welcome to us when we arrived. We will definitely be returning and look forward to booking in again in the future.
