A stay in this exquisitely restored and furnished 18th century townhouse is sure to be one of your most memorable holiday experiences. Only a short walk from the centre of a charming village, its ancient stone walls hold the secrets of generations.
Share a meal in the modern kitchen-diner where a picturesquely arched doorway leads to a pretty courtyard. Take the stairs up to the magnificent beamed ceiling of the elegantly furnished living room, where you can intriguingly access the pool terrace. Relax with a book on the comfy chair in the quaint reading nook or catch up on your e-mails on the mezzanine level above while the children enjoy hiding away in the cosy snug.
The fascinating layout of this characterful and fully air-conditioned house is one of its delights and it will be fun finding your fabulous bedrooms, four of which are reached by two separate flights of stairs. Above them all is the amazing fifth bedroom with lovely views over the village.
Outside, surrounded by ancient stone walls, is a courtyard for romantic al-fresco dining as well as having a shaded space beyond its arches. A delightful enclosed outdoor swimming pool is rather extraordinarily constructed at the top of a flight of stairs in the converted ruins of this part of the house.
Enjoy the stroll to the centre of the village where you will find restaurants, cafés and a bakery for breakfast croissants. You’ll conveniently find the supermarket in nearby L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, a gorgeous market town encircled by the river with canals, bridges and waterwheels alongside its lovely streets. As well as its well-known weekend markets, it is renowned for its many antique shops and there are bars, cafés and restaurants in the old town.
A short drive from your holiday home is Gordes, officially one of the most beautiful villages in France, built on the foothills of the Monts de Vaucluse facing the Luberon. There are many family activities in the superb landscapes of the Luberon such as hiking, cycling, horse riding and rock-climbing. There are other idyllic villages to visit such as Lacoste, Ménerbes and Bonnieux or you might want to travel to the magnificent small mountains of Les Alpilles towards Arles or enjoy a day trip to the historic city of Avignon or even Aix-en-Provence.

About the surrounding area of Le Clos De MathildeLe Clos de Mathilde is located near the centre of a small village in the Vaucluse Department of Provence, about 6km from the town of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.
In this charming village there is a small handful of restaurants, cafés and a bakery for breakfast croissants. Find a supermarket in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, a gorgeous market town known as the “Venice of the North”, with canals, bridges and water wheels - it is particularly well known for its many antique shops as well as its weekend street markets including the Sunday morning brocante.
It is a 15 minute drive eastwards to find Gordes, one of the seven most beautiful French villages in the Vaucluse, built on the foothills of the Monts de Vaucluse and facing the Luberon - don’t miss the fragrant summer lavender fields of nearby Sénanque Abbey.
Travel further into the heart of the Luberon to the small town of Apt at the foot of the mountain range between the Vaucluse and Luberon. It is classified as a site remarquable du gout as a result of the fine local produce sold at its two markets.
Explore the hiking and biking trails of the Luberon National Park, play a round of golf at the picturesque Golf de Saumane, canoe down the crystal clear waters of the River Sorgue or take a tour of the Luberon vineyards and wineries.
14km from Le Clos de Mathilde is Ménerbes, a village perched on the hilltop in the Luberon Mountains, yet another of the plus beaux villages in France with restaurants, cafés, a bakery and ice-cream parlour. There are other idyllic villages to visit such as Lacoste, Ménerbes and Bonnieux. Take the exciting drive southwards from Bonnieux through the glorious Luberon hills and cedar forests to Lourmarin, once an important staging post on the Marseille-Apt route running through the mountain range.
A 40 minute drive southwards towards Eyguières will give you a taste of Les Alpilles or visit artistic Saint-Rémy-de-Provence on the edge this amazing area. If you feel like exploring further afield, take a day trip to Avignon with its UNESCO World Heritage sites. Aix-en-Provence, one of France's finest university towns, is also well worth a visit and Arles, the gateway to the Carmargue, is just over an hour’s drive away.

Best Suited For: All AgesChildren are sure to enjoy the atmosphere and fun in the flea and street markets of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, to the sound of the trickling streams. Walk the waterwheel circuit, then visit the beautiful Partage Des Eaux for a picnic, paddle or even a swim in the shallow water here.
This part of Provence offers many exciting activities for kids - mountain biking, hiking, horse riding, rock climbing, exploring the caves at Thouzon or canoeing or kayaking down the River Sorgue in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.
Visit one of the many castles in the Luberon, built defensively around the villages and some dating back to the 10th century. You can go inside Lourmarin castle, 34km away, in a picturesque setting surrounded by olive trees.
It’s a half hour drive to the tree-top activity centre near Fontaine de Vaucluse. There are courses for children aged three and upwards (depending on height).
It’s a 40 minute trip southwards to Barben Zoo, near Salon-de-Provence. Here the animals have reasonably sized enclosures to roam in and for the children there is food, ice cream and a great playground. For a two in one day trip, next to the zoo is the well preserved Chateau de Barben!
