A traditional holiday home just outside Avignon, Villa Des Papes offers pretty gardens and a wonderful swimming pool in a great location for exploring so many different parts of Provence.
Part of a larger property, this 3-bedroom villa dates back to the 18th century and was once the house’s stables. Nowadays its charm lives on in its inviting interiors, simply yet thoughtfully furnished with old-fashioned pieces alongside modern touches such as air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. The owner, who lives on the estate, is proud of the care she has taken to make this a comfortable and welcoming home for families or friends alike.
Sliding doors open straight out to a picturesque terrace for al-fresco meals, looking out towards the swimming pool and garden dotted with olive trees and summer colours. Find a shady spot beneath an ancient tree and sit back with a glass of Côtes De Provence rosé, perhaps before strolling out for a meal at the prestigious five-star auberge offering fine-dining and spa services just a short walk away.
Spend the day in nearby Avignon, exploring its bustling markets, eating out in characterful restaurants and visiting its two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Pont d'Avignon and Palais des Papes. Then there’s so many picturesque towns across the Vaucluse such as Carpentras, Pernes-les-Fontaines and Orange – visit on market day to pick up all sorts of wonderful Provençal produce.
Cycling enthusiasts will be keen to head to Bédoin and Mont Ventoux whilst walkers will adore the undulating landscapes of the Luberon with picture-perfect hilltop villages such as Gordes and Ménerbes set amongst orchards, vineyards and woodland.
Then there’s wine-tasting in nearby Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the olive groves of Les Alpilles, the art galleries of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and the antique stores of enchanting L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, before returning to the sweet surroundings of your charming holiday home.

About the surrounding area of Villa Des PapesVilla Des Papes is in the Vaucluse department of Provence, set in the outskirts of Avignon around a 15-minute drive to the heart of the historic city.
In a residential neighbourhood, it’s just a short stroll through the local tree-lined park to a five-star auberge which offers fine-dining for lunch and dinner as well as spa services (treatments, indoor pool, hammam and jacuzzi). The area also features useful amenities such as supermarkets and shops as well as an 18-hole golf course within a 5-minute drive.
The heart of historic Avignon is only 7km by car and a wonderful place to spend the day. Of course, it’s most famous for its UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Pope’s Palace and Saint Benezet Bridge, but it’s also loved for its bustling markets and excellent restaurants. Head to the atmospheric quarter near the Sorgue river and soak up the village ambience as you admire artists at work and stop off in a café or wine-bar.
History-lovers should also include Nîmes (53km) on their to-do list, home of some of France’s best preserved Roman remains including Maison Carrée, perhaps stopping off for a picnic or canoe excursion by the Roman Aqueduct, Le Pont Du Gard (33km), yet another UNESCO World Heritage site.
Closer to home, visit some of the picturesque villages and towns dotted across the Vaucluse department - Pernes-les-Fontaines is lovely on market day, especially in the summer months when all sorts of seasonal fruit is sold by local farmers, whilst L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is enchanting with its waterways, antique stores and superb Sunday morning brocante.
There are ample wine-tasting opportunities in the Rhône valley including the well-known wine-town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape only 14km away. The mesmerising Luberon is another good area for sampling local wines – there are many great walks through vineyards, orchards and woodland as well as idyllic hilltop villages such as Gordes and Ménerbes.
The artistic town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence which inspired so many of Van Gogh’s paintings, is half an hour by car - visit on a Wednesday morning to experience its popular Provençal market or perhaps combine with a visit to Les Baux-de-Provence (40km), one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Set in Les Alpilles Regional Nature Park, this region is a paradise for walkers and there are some fine olive oils to be sampled in farms dotted across endless olive groves.
Cyclists will love the many trails through this part of Provence whether following routes through the Vaucluse plains, discovering the landscapes of the Luberon or heading towards the challenging Mont Ventoux – the charming village of Bédoin is around 36km away, a mecca for cycling enthusiasts.
Not forgetting other gorgeous towns nearby from historic Orange (28km) to the north or Arles (45km) further south, the gateway to the Camargue. Even Aix-en-Provence can be reached in just over an hour, no doubt passing landscapes loved so much by Cézanne.

Best Suited For: All AgesThere is plenty to keep families entertained in this part of Provence whether touring the historic town of Avignon on the little road train, taking boat trips along the Rhône or enjoying a range of outdoor activities across this region’s wonderful landscapes.
Just a 5-minute drive from Villa Des Papes is a watersports lake specialising in wake-boarding, usually open April to October on certain days of the week. There’s also an indoor trampoline park if kids need to let off steam on rainy days as well as a bowling alley and soft play centre within a few minutes by car.
Watersport enthusiasts should also head to picturesque Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and hire canoes or kayaks to paddle down the Sorgue river in beautiful surroundings. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is also home to a tree-top adventure centre with activities for a range of ages as well as some stunning walks.
Towards the market town of Carpentras, Parc Spirou Provence is another popular trip out with all sorts of rides and amusements. The fascinating caves at Grottes de Thouzon are a short drive away, as is the charming model railway centre, Le Jarditrain, just the other side of Carpentras.
Not forgetting ample horse-riding, rock-climbing, cycling and walking opportunities across Les Alpilles and the Luberon regions, both mesmerising parts of southern France.

Brilliant time
We have had a lovely couple of weeks at Villa des Papes. 6 of us (parents and grown up children) have enjoyed days by the pool and great day trips out across Provence. We enjoyed the welcome and warmth of the host, sharing great company and a glass or two on a couple of evenings. We flew into Marseille with very convenient car rental and only an hour up the A7 to Avignon. Certainly a car is essential to make the most of all that is around. A grand entrance with a large lounge/dining room opening on to the shaded rear terrace in the secluded garden with a large swimming pool, a practical kitchen, utility room with washing machine and dryer, and a downstairs toilet (serving bedrooms 2&3). Upstairs the main bedroom, bathroom and toilet are independently accessed by staircase from the lounge. The main bedroom has a double and a pull out bed, accommodating up to four. A second spiral staircase at the opposite end of the house takes you to double bedrooms 2 & 3 with a separate bathroom (shower/ sink). The main bedroom and bedroom 2 adjoin by two doors, providing for both access across the upstairs rooms and for privacy. Villa des Papes retains its family home charm with many original features, at the same time served by very fast WiFi, very effective air conditioning in the bedrooms and lounge, and a good sized swimming pool. Villa Des Papes is a quiet haven on the outskirts of Avignon. Hilltop gite with views across Provence or modern villa by the sea - it is not, but secluded, full of charm and with the advantage of location. We have found it a brilliant base to access all that is great in Provence… It’s a quick 15-20 minute drive or taxi ride right into the centre of Avignon with the famous sites and wide choice of great restaurants, well served by local shops and a huge Centre Commerciale only 10 minutes away. Many things to do within an hour’s drive - the Pont du Gard (we enjoyed a canoe trip down the Gard under the Roman acqueduct), amazing Uzès, the beautiful hilltop villages of the Luberon valley (a guided day tour on e-bikes through the Luberon has been a particular highlight!), wine tasting in the vineyards of Chateauneuf du Pape, the amazing citadel of Les Baux, the Roman cities of Nimes and Arles, and up to 90 minutes drive to Marseille, La Camargue and the beautiful port and calanques of Cassis. We have had a brilliant time and would look forward to a return visit.

We definitely recommend
A quintessentially Provençal feel ! A just short drive from Avignon, Villeneuve les Avignon, Isle sur la Sorgue, les Baux de Provence et St Rémy de Provence. We loved the confortable living room with wooden beamed celling just near the pool and of course the shady terrace with wicker seats and fantastic barbecue for dining. Thanks so much for our stay in this beautiful Villa. We definitely recommend.

Well situated, beautiful and spotless
Spotless and really beautiful. We appreciated littles touches that showed through, soap and some basic meal ingredients. It is very well suited for a quiet relaxing break. The pool is very well maintained, clean as well. Great pleasant host.

Brilliant
This villa certainly allows you to get away from it all. An old fortified castle with a large tower and your own section with an enclosed garden and a lovely swimming pool with ample outdoor space. The old character and the walls keep you cool and the villa has really everything to cook at home. Close to supermarkets and a small bakery and butcher (and an excellent restaurant) the owner's help is always on hand when needed. Brilliant place to explore the south of France and completely relax.

Great memories
Our family lucked into a 2 week stay at Villa des Papes at the end of summer. The villa was expansive, with plenty of room for the 6 of us, all the modern amenities but with a classic charm. The pool and deck were great, there were organic markets very close and a quality gas grill on the pool deck. The villa was centrally located and we were able to take short drives to all the Cotes du Rhone wine villages, as well as Avignon, Arles, Orange and even Cassis and the Camargue were easy day trips. The host and owner, lives nearby and was a joy - we ended up having champagne, snacks and laughs several times over our stay and are happy to say we left Villa des Papes with not only great memories, but new friends as well.
