Guests can enjoy exceptional architecture in the local area, with several medieval castles in Cathar Country. Catharism was a religious dissident sect developed in 13th century Languedoc. It was fought against in the Albigensian Crusade (1209) and eradicated in the 14th century, but castles such as those in Peyrepertuse, Quéribus and Villerouge still exist.

Of the 3,000km of designated hiking paths in the Aude, the 200km Cathar Trail, which runs from the Mediterranean to the Pyrénées, is highly recommended. Discover a wide variety of landscapes with a number of medieval castles appearing along the way.
The Carcassonne Festival, held each summer, brings together over 100 performances, including opera, dance, theatre and music, most of which you can watch free of charge. For music lovers, Fugue en Aude Romane spans two weeks in July and involves a series of concerts held in abbeys.
The coastline of Narbonne is one of the best windsurfing spots in the world, and offers excellent conditions for kite surfers and kite flying.
One of the largest local markets is in Carcassonne, held on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at Place Carnot in the town centre. Castelnaudary has a food market on Monday morning and the market at Lézignan-Corbières takes place in the centre of the commune on Wednesday mornings. Visit Limoux on a Friday for more fresh local produce.
Pro tip: look out for the ‘Pays Cathare’ quality mark, which identifies a range of quality products and services offered by local people in the Aude.

How long have you owned the property?
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The location in peaceful countryside within 6 hours reach from any major city (flying). The views over the Pyrenees and the surrounding vineyards!
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The cathar country of Carcassonne has got a rich History of strong hold against the then established Church of Rome seen as the opulent and corrupted religious organisation. In contrary Catharism believed in the good God of Earth and Nature and the bad God of Humans. The people from Aude are very proud of their History and cultivate this mindset of independence and freedom!
What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received?
Could you get rid of the bees in the garden…?
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites..
Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Go local. Eat local. Get lost in small villages.
We didn't want to leave
We stayed in the villa for 2 weeks in the middle of August as a family of 4, plus my mum for one of the weeks. It was fantastic and none of us wanted to leave! The villa is very spacious, with lovely modern design and well set out. Lots of double patio doors both front and back allows any breeze to keep it lovely and cool in very hot weather and air conditioning in the bedrooms meant the nights were very comfortable too. All the bedrooms and bathrooms were very clean and good showers with plenty of towels provided. Well equipped in general - massive oven, dishwasher and washing machine, lots of cutlery and crockery etc. The Wi-Fi was fine and fast enough to allow video streaming of films on Netflix etc. The American style fridge was much appreciated - loads of freezer space for ice cream and an ice maker! The pool was really lovely with lots of sunbeds for lounging and kept my 2 daughters entertained for hours. The surrounding area is very peaceful and completely in the countryside - very private and surrounded by vineyards and sunflower fields. It adds to a lovely sense of getting away from everything but there is a small village within 5 minutes drive for bakery, 8 til 8 etc and Limoux and Mirepoix, larger town within 20-30 minutes with great markets - particularly Mirepoix.
When you want a longer swim than the pool there is a lake called Lac Montbel about 25-30 minutes drive away on the outskirts of a town called Leran - it has a beach area with a great café - good meals and ice cream and the lake, although a bit muddy at the water's edge, is lovely for long swims and for children to mess about in - lifeguard there until 31st August with a cordoned off area for swimmers/young swimmers. The town of Leran also is home to a great cycle hire place called Velomondo - run by Craig who was extremely helpful setting us up for a bike ride - and with 2 flagging children, me having completely misjudged how hot it actually was the day we cycled, came with his car and picked us and the bikes up from Mirepoix - fantastic service and bikes and would definitely recommend. There is a green, mostly road free route from Lac Montbel starting though the forest which was fun! We would definitely come back to this villa if we have another French villa holiday, might consider flying to Toulouse and hiring a car next time as it was only an hour away. Thank you Fanny for a lovely stay!!
We all would love to come stay again
Three families spent a wonderful August week in this lovely modern villa (built in a traditional Aude style) with great facilities and a contemporary interior.
The house is not overlooked by anyone, kids can make as much noise as they like, or without youngsters you get perfect peace and quiet. You also get magnificent views of the stars at night and the beautiful surrounding countryside by day.
Upon her arrival, Fanny, the Owner, was most helpful before we arrived as was her Property Manager.
The swimming pool pump broke in the middle of the week and a new one was fitted with in 3 hours. Now, thats how to keep guests' kids and parents happy!
A wonderful stay at Bastide Bellegarde
We had a wonderful 3 weeks at the villa. Thank you for letting us stay, the weather was great and the pool was great too. I'm sure we'll be back soon.
Fabulous vineyards views
This picturesque house is set in lovely, tranquil French countryside, surrounded by vineyards. We visited the surrounding towns less than expected, as it was so nice staying around the house and enjoying the property and the views. Within minutes of leaving the house we were cycling through vineyards or through the nearby forest. The spacious living/dining/kitchen area (which opens directly onto the terrace) was great for our group of friends. The house was as described, clean and had every convenience we needed.
A wonderful stay
We stayed here for a cycling trip for only a few days and wished we could have stayed for longer. The house is like something from a cheesy postcard it's so photogenic. The house is very large, very clean, and in a wonderful setting. I highly recommend it.
Can't wait to go back already!
This stunning Villa is set in a tranquil and fresh surrounding. With plenty of rooms, it's an ideal place to stay with a larger group and can easily accommodate 12 people. I travelled with my husband, two daughters and parents so there were only 6 of us. I normally don't sleep properly the first night in a new place but did not have any trouble here. The large garden is perfect for BBQ's and the swimming pool is gated off, making it particularly convenient with little ones. This villa is child friendly and there is even a safety gate under the stairs. I was impressed with how well the kitchen was kitted out so if you are serious about cooking and food, this is the kitchen! From oyster knives to a citrus press, it would be crime not to treat yourself to the perfect evening in with your family and friends. This villa oozes style and comfort. Fanny was incredibly helpful with her information pack. Communicating with her was not a problem as she always got back to us within a good time. Plenty of local vineyards to visit and a 50 minute car journey into Toulouse and 25 minutes into Carcasonne. Domain Gayda is nearby and worth a visit and Les Jardin de l'opera in Toulouse is amazing. I emailed the two places ahead of time and they both did an excellent job at catering for my dietary needs.
Looking forward to going back in the near future.
Hope to return again
Thank you for such a wonderful weekend Bastide Bellgarde!
It provided all 10 of us with a beautiful space to enjoy daily group yoga sessions, walk in the endless vineyards and generally unwind. We had charming local chef prepare delicious home cooked, fresh foods each day which made the whole weekend feel even more of a break from the urban grind. It was such a joy to swim in the pool each day, we even had a morning yoga session outside as the weather was still good.
I shall miss the walks in the vineyards surrounding the villa, the beautiful clean countryside air and the absolute peace of the place. Thank you - I certainly hope to return again for more yoga, relaxing and unwinding:).
Everything i could need!
We had a great stay at the villa. The house is set in a quiet rural road with breathtaking views over the vineyards. The house itself has been completely renovated and is very comfortable. Everything is there to ensure a pleasant stay: good mattresses, comfortable bed linens, very well equipped kitchen, etc. We also had a good experience communicating with the host. We would definitely rent again!
8 adults, 3 babies, big intercontinental family reunion over xmas.
we were a little apprehensive about going in winter, turns out it wasn't a problem, and in the end we had an amazing week.
first, the region is so quintessentially rural france. lots of tiny little villages within 30min driving distance. such amazing produce and food (and also some not so good food - avoid the patisserie in fanjeaux!)
second, house. very nicely done, very comfortable for 8+ adults, toasty warm even in the middle of winter. great kitchen, plenty of bathrooms, amazing south facing views of the pyrenees, excellent privacy. both fanny and sylvie were incredibly responsive and helpful.
would HIGHLY recommend to anyone.
An excellent, well equipped villa in a lovely peaceful setting
We enjoyed a great family holiday at Bastide Bellegarde and have already recommended the villa to several friends. The villa is one of the nicest we have stayed in as a large group and is excellently decorated and furnished. The large, well kept gardens that surround the villa provided more than enough space for the children to run around and the various seating areas were much appreciated.
The pool was of course a big hit in the hot weather and the areas of shade around the pool were welcome on the hottest days. Our 7 year old was rarely out of the pool and had learnt to swim by the end of the week. The setting of the villa was perfect, being surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside. We were lucky enough to be there when the sunflower fields were in full bloom providing a wonderful backdrop to the garden.
The local villages are very picturesque and the couple of miles cycle ride to buy bread from Belveze du Razes each morning along the quiet country road and past fields of sunflowers and vines was most enjoyable.
The surrounding area has a number of attractions and we particularly enjoyed the botanical garden at Limoux and a walk along the tree lined Canal du Midi.
Fanny, Sylvie and the gardener were all very helpful and added to a fantastic and relaxing holiday. We hope to return soon.
Beautiful Bastide Bellegarde
We really enjoyed our stay at Bastide Bellegarde. The villa itself is very beautiful, surrounded by vineyards and not overlooked. The view of the snow-capped Pyrénées from the bedroom window was lovely to wake up to! It is close to the local village and a short drive from other pretty villages (I would recommend a drive to Alet-les-Bains, which has a beautiful riverside setting and you can also have a look around the remains of the Abbey). It is also only around a 40 minute drive from Carcassonne so very convenient if you are flying in with Ryan Air (I would definitely recommend having a car to get around). The villa was spacious, immaculately presented and spotlessly clean with a big family bathroom and a number of lovely en-suites in most of the double rooms. If you like to cook, the kitchen is very well stocked with pots, pans and utensils, there is a large fridge and we made great use of the huge oven during our stay! We went to some of the fantastic local food markets and got some great local produce to cook with (we would recommend the food market at Mirepoix on the Monday). The villa was also a fantastic base to explore Cathar country - we took a trip down to the Chateau de Peyrepertuse (a breathtaking ruined fortress that sits on the cliff edge) and although it was a longish drive (about a couple of hours), the countryside on the way was beautiful and it made a great day out. We also had a great day exploring the medieval city in Carcassone, which is definitely a must. If you fancy lazing the day away at the villa there was a good sized pool and plenty of garden furniture (table, sunloungers, chairs etc.) if you wanted to sunbathe or eat outside. The caretaker, Sylvie, was extremely welcoming and easily contactable if we had any questions. Overall we all had a really great stay and hope to be able to return again one day!
Wonderful villa in idyllic countryside
A lovely rustic villa set in serene countryside with vineyards and rolling fields and even a nearby lake. We only had a short stay but it felt much longer as you begin to relax straight away and everything is provided with all the amenities we needed. The interior was stylish and simple whilst outside there is plenty of space and a good size pool. We enjoyed a couple of trips to local vineyards, the local village is a quick drive away with a great bakery and small shop and newsagents that also sells international papers. The only regret is that we weren't there long enough but we're looking forward to returning soon for a longer holiday.
5 July 2013 for a stay in June 2013
A glimpse of Utopia
From the moment we enquired about the villa until after our return home, things could not have gone better.
Fanny is incredibly helpful and very easy to communicate with, Sylvie, the care taker, is also extremely helpful and so cheerful, and we were happy she agreed to spend a little time with us, telling us about the villa and the surrounding area.
The villa itself? Stunning! Finished to a very high standard, it was well appointed. If I had to make note of anything that was other than excellent, I would say the en-suite upstairs could usefully have had a wc rather than a double walk-in shower, but the shower is, indeed, a thing of beauty.
The huge fridge was great, especially as we were a group made up of two families and there were 11 of us in total. The villa is also equipped with a fab cooker and oven as well as a supper selection of cookware (important to us as we are keen foodies). Hot water was just that - extremely hot and lots of it.
The sitting room is large and the iPod dock is great, the tv easy to use and is more than big enough. Wi-fi easy to connect to and supported everyone's various devices.
There are hair driers at the property, so you needn't use valuable weight in your bags (especially if you fly Ryanair) and there are also one or two adapters too.
Outside the gardens are large and well kept. There is a BBQ which was clean and there was charcoal and lighters (we did buy more and obviously left what we didn't use)
The pool area is lovely, and the pool itself large enough for all the children to have loads of fun. My only complaint of the outside area is there Are on or two loose patio slabs.
The area itself is gorgeous, with views across the snow capped mountains and the vast fields of sunflowers. The local town has a lovely little supermarket, but the hyper-markets are not far away either.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Definitely! We want to go back ourselves.
5 August 2013 for a stay in July 2013
Bastide Bellegarde is perfectly situated between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains (the Pyrenees), on a hill surrounded by vineyards. I enjoyed the inspiring views and vine. It is a perfect place to rejuvenated the body and soul. I was very reluctant to leave the comfortable
home ... the stay was unforgettable..
Delightful French holiday
Bastide Bellegarde lived up to expectations and we had a really delightful holiday. There were neat and clean, fresh towels and linens on the table. It was a super nice villa which had everything. One should be aware that the villa is in the countryside far away from the shops. I will again try to rent again and recommend it on to friends and acquaintances.
Body and soul are rejuvenated
The Bastide Bellegardeis perfectly situated between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains (the Pyrenees), on a hill surrounded by vineyards.. It inspires to travel in time where the vine and purple reigned. Time age no longer flows in those places where body and soul are rejuvenated. The comfort and amenities, its pleasant interiors make the departure reluctant ... to better return.. The stay is unforgettable..
Wonderful and quiet place
Bastide Bellegarde is a wonderful and quiet place for a nice and relaxing holiday. Rooms are large and very well furnished, and some have private en suite bathroom. The villa also has a very large and enjoyable common area on the ground floor. In the summer you will certainly appreciate the beautiful garden and ideal swimming pool. I had a wonderful time there!
We stayed in Bastide Bellegarde last year and had a great time in this fantastic house from the moment we had our very warm welcome, to when we reluctantly handed the keys back.
The house exterior is a traditional Country French Villa which has been beautifully renovated. It is so peaceful, there is complete privacy and you will never be short of space.
The outdoor swimming pool was not open when we visited out of season, but I can appreciate what a great addition it would be in the Summer for a group of family and friends.
There are spectacular views across the countryside, vineyards and mountains from all of the bedrooms which makes for a wonderfully romantic sight especially at night time.
The very spacious interior has been fitted with lovely contemporary fixtures and furniture. It is spotlessly clean and finished to a very high standard.
The bathrooms are excellent and very special as you can see from the pictures.
The kitchen is extremely well equipped with everything you would ever need and has a great range cooker and huge fridge!
The situation of the villa is perfect as a relaxing retreat to come back to after a day visiting so much that the Languedoc-Roussillon area has to offer
I would highly recommend this Villa and would love to return again.
