Overview
Just a short drive from the banks of the Dordogne River, Maison Petipa is a typical French Manor set in four hectares of private grounds and makes a delightful place for a relaxing visit to this enchanting region.
The property consists of two houses, both tastefully restored while retaining many characterful features such as wood-beamed ceilings and brick walls. The owners have created a welcoming ambience without foregoing a sense of the manor's history in both properties. The larger house is the place for groups and families to gather. As you walk up the stone stairs and enter through the veranda, you'll find a cosy living room with sofas and a dining corner ready for you to enjoy meals with loved ones. Right next to it, the sleek kitchen has steel appliances and a large bench table in the middle. The bedrooms are all located on the upper floors, which can be accessed via an open-tread staircase and feature comfortable beds combined with sleek furnishings and plenty of ambient and natural lighting.
A smaller second apartment can also be found on the grounds, facing the manor house, with an inviting living space and kitchen diner alongside two bedrooms with space for an additional four guests.
The holiday home is on top of a hill, meaning there are many breathtaking views over the Dordogne and Lot Valley. On hot summer days, you can cool down in the pool, or simply laze on the terrace and work on your tan. There are also plenty of quiet corners equipped with garden furniture and comfy lounge chairs to sip your morning coffee and soak up the atmosphere.
You are fantastically positioned to explore the Perigord Noir and all its allure – think endless châteaux, delightful markets, prehistoric caves and lush gardens. The closest town, Gourdon, is only a 10-minute drive away and boasts local amenities alongside charismatic restaurants dotted along its medieval streets.
The Dordogne department hosts numerous charming villages and towns, many of them classed as France’s Plus Beaux Villages, such as Domme, occupying a splendid position high above the Dordogne River. From here, you can organise kayaking and canoeing trips and set off on riverside trails leading to places such as the pretty Saint-Amand-de-Coly, with the famous Lascaux caves nearby or the 13th-century bastide village of Monpazier.

Location
About the surrounding area of Maison PetipaLocated in southwestern France's countryside sprinkled with tiny villages and pretty medieval towns, Maison Petipa offers a comfortable stay in the heart of Dordogne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
There are many small villages nearby, with the closest larger town being Gourdon. Among its honey-hued architecture, you can find restaurants, bakeries and local amenities such as a supermarket should you wish to stock up on delicious ingredients. However, make sure to linger and stay to explore its historical past by admiring the castles of Butte du château and Château de Gourdon, as well as Église Saint-Pierre – a beautiful 14th-century church with stained glass windows. Apart from all these landmarks, there's also something for nature lovers in the Les Jardins de la Butte and Le Jardin de la clède.
The area is full of natural wonders and pretty places to wander; some can be found just outside your front door. Walk through the forests and discover the small caves Grotte des Soupirs and Grotte et source du Piage, or cool down in the Le Mouline lake framed by a sandy beach and a nature reserve.
Another amazing town for a day trip is Rocamadour, built on the edge of a cliff with the river at the bottom of the gorge. Known for its Cité Réligieuse complex of religious buildings, accessed via the Grand Escalier staircase. Make sure to visit the Chapelle Notre-Dame, with its Black Madonna statue, and the Romanesque-Gothic Basilica of St-Sauveur. Apart from fascinating landmarks, there's also something for animal lovers in the La Forêt des Singes, a park where macaques roam free, and the Rocher des Aigles bird park full of different bird species.
Known as the capital of Perigord Noir and famed for its excellent gastro scene, Sarlat-la-Canéda is one of the area’s most famous towns. It features a maze of narrow medieval streets and charming squares with Renaissance features. Admire the lovely Sainte-Marie Church, which hosts an indoor food market, and ride in the glass elevator in the bell tower offering superb city views. To taste more regional specialities, head to the Sarlat Market, which sells foie gras, cheese, the famous Perigordian truffle, crepes, walnuts, goat’s cheese, and confits.
If you're hoping to breathe in the fresh air, why not head to Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, a 30-minute drive away? Apart from fantastic hiking opportunities and breathtaking views, you can visit quaint villages, streams and rivers and admire castles such as the Château de Vaillac with its fortified stables.
Region
The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.
The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.
The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesAlthough there's plenty of space for children to roam free at Maison Petipa, you'll love exploring the surrounding area with the entire family. The diverse landscape offers a wealth of activities for every weather.
Near the Dordogne River and in the surrounding area, you can hire bicycles or quad bikes and go horse-riding through the forests and dipping hills. Adventure-seeking teenagers might prefer canoeing or paddle boarding, while small children will love feeding ducks and foraging for plants along waterside trails. A pleasant hiking path, Rando Quad Périgord, can be found near the village of Groléjac. At the same time, many other paths around also offer an enchanting mise en scene and invite you to enjoy a picnic. Only a short drive away from the village, you can find a small lake with a sandy beach popular with families with children thanks to its easy access.
Alternatively, you can visit Souillac's toy museum Musée de l'Automate or spend the day splashing around at Quercyland, a waterpark with plenty of slides and activities for little ones. Saint-Amand-de-Coly is famous for the prehistoric caves of Lascaux.
