The house lies an hour from Bordeaux, around 40km from Bergerac and about half an hour by car from Saint-Émilion.

The lovely local village is around 1km away and is home to a boulangerie, grocery store and other useful shops as well as a handful of places to eat.

Pessac-sur-Dordogne is a short drive away where there are opportunities to kayak along the Dordogne river. A little further, stop at St Foy La Grande (16km) to enjoy a coffee in the square, take a walk along the river or if you are around on Saturday morning you will find shopping a real delight.

The most highly recommended restaurant is just a few kilometres away and it is essential to be hungry when you arrive. The vineyard workers of the area leave for their day with sustenance at this family orientated place. The bean and vegetable soup with duck stock is fantastic.

Leaving the house to get to Saint-Émilion, you should drive through Pujols, as just outside is a great little restaurant with a very pleasant atmosphere and fantastic food.

Saint-Émilion (26km) itself is an incredible place to visit - the village and its vineyards have UNESCO World Heritage status and it offers the perfect mix of history and world-famous wine.

Sunday is a good day for venturing to Issigeac (52km) for the wonderful market. The town itself is quaint and riddled with tiny rivers, loved by tourists and locals alike. The dessert wines of the region are fantastic and the Monbazilliac wine, a musty fragrant delight from this spot, is very good value.

The city of Bordeaux is an hour away and you can visit the bustling restaurants, theatres and incredible architecture. Bergerac, much smaller than Bordeaux, has a very enchanting old town that has great individual shops, fountains, cobble stone streets, an atmospheric brocante every first Sunday of the month as well as a traditional market every Wednesday.

If you yearn for sea air and seafood, make an early start to set off for Arcachon Bay, as it will take two hours to get there. The shops are smart and the ambience is that of a well visited resort where sophisticated the Bordelaise promenade. Spain is approximately 4 hours away and en route are Bidart, St Jean De Luz & Biarritz.

The region is an area rich with vineyards and châteaux of every shape and type, with grapes and vines as far as the eye can see.

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Owner Profile

Property Owner – Jonathan & Barbara
I originate from London and Jonathon from Ireland and we both have a deep love for music…they are varied tastes. As with our styles of cooking...but that is a complimentary asset.
How long have you owned the property?
11 years ago, we decided to run to the country and create Clos de Chinon, a place where people can stay, rest and enjoy some great food and wine. Nothing is more fun than sharing our knowledge of secret chateaux...for wine tastings, pop up restaurants and picnics.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
It is an area which is growing...gently and elegantly with small enterprises popping up like the Easter crocus. It is a lovely place to enjoy being together...a bunch of friends or are united family. Cook together share wine, words and walks.
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?

We have fed the rich and famous from David Bowie to the Freud family. We have worked alongside very famous chefs and have employed some in the past.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...Really do?
We have always loved France and spent spare moments visiting almost all of the regions before we sold our restaurant and came to glorious S. W France near St Emilion.

Really eat?
Our restaurant had 3 AA rosettes in the AA guide...and no not alcoholics AA, but one of the food bibles.
Really see?
Our area just here is stunningly rolls, it is vibrantly green and river and lakes make wonderful punctuations. Every time we go out for a drive or just to shop we discover something new.
Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
We are so easy to get to...that was another reason for coming here to live...not much more than half an hour from an airport which links to London...and other places...of course. So as chefs what do we will have to book in and I will not be disappointed. I am contented...winters day and writing this by the log fire.

  • Just what we Needed

The Owners are very good hosts and its really lovely house.

  • Could have stayed longer

Posted by Asmita V on 04/08/2017

What an absolutely delightful place to stay and spend a week of summer here at Clos De Chinon. We were 6 adults and 2 kids (both under 18 months) and this place was home for us for a week. Jonathan and Barbara are such fantastic hosts (and chefs!!) and no request is too big for them. They looked after us with great care and ensured the property was perfectly kid friendly (cots in rooms, pool safety, play area in the garden, tubs of toys around the house). Both bubs had a blast which made it a seriously relaxing and delightful holiday for all of us. We are all massive food and wine enthusiasts and so are Jonathan and Barbara so we had plenty to bond over. Their recommendations are on point (dinner in the vineyards, wine tasting, other restaurants ... all top notch recommendations). Oh and make sure you request them to cater one of your dinners for you one evening. You wont be disappointed. Thank you for having us and we look forward to more future holidays your way.

Our family, consisting of six adults and three small boys, stayed on a self-catering basis at Clos de Chinon during the last week of June. The property is delightful, very stylish and accommodating, from the extremely well-equipped kitchen to the very popular children's toys found both in the pool area and the house, and the delightful garden and the outside amenities were so appreciated by us all. Gensac, as well as the surrounding area, is charming and situated in the most idyllic and tranquil area. A visit to St Emilion is an absolute must. Best of all though was the welcome we received from John and Barbara who made sure we all had a lovely holiday. They live nearby and during our stay unobstrusively looked after the pool and large garden area whilst we weren't around, but are always on hand if needed to deal with any queries. Clos de Chinon is highly recommended!

Hi Ravi / Oliver's Travels! Thank you! The whole experience was wonderful from booking with your team, right the way through to the end of our stay. Clos De Chinon was fabulous, Barbara and Jonathan were very accommodating and created a beautiful wedding. We will always have very fond memories of our trip, and hope to book another one of your properties in the future. Thanks again

Clos de Chinon is a stunning house surrounded by vineyards yet only 10 minutes walk from the quaint village of Gensac. The owners, Barbara and Jonathan, gave us a very warm welcome on arrival and a helpful tour of the property explaining how everything works. It is spacious and very well furnished and equipped and the gardens and pool areas are beautiful. Gensac is a great base for touring this part of France and the travel connections via Bergerac all worked very well. We would definitely recommend this property for families of a group of friends.

  • Our French Wedding

Posted by Lisa S. on 06/07/2016

We have just returned from the most amazing stay at Clos de Chinon, and whilst we were there we had our wedding ceremony. The owners Barbara and Jonathan were wonderful, nothing was to much trouble. They helped me to organise the wedding before we even arrived. And when we did arrive our special day was everything we hoped for and more. The venue and setting is stunning, and we felt right at home. The food cooked by Jonathan and Barbara was absolutely delicious and we couldn't fault any of it. The decor whilst quirky is very in keeping with the property and stylish. The pool is a great bonus as well, especially if you holiday there with children. We all had a fantastic time and would recommend it to everyone. I loved it so much that when the time came to leave I cried!! Thanks again for everything Barbara and Jonathan you are a lovely couple and a great team xxx

  • Wonderful

Posted by Sam E on 20/06/2016

John and Barbara were wonderful hosts, providing not only a beautiful, peaceful and well appointed house, but fantastic restaurant and day trip suggestions. Barbara worked tirelessly prior to our arrival to book restaurants, make arrangements for the children and find 2 brilliant babysitters for all 6 of them. John's cooking on the Sunday night was one of the best meals we had in France. We would all highly recommend a stay at Clos de Chinon.

  • Beautiful Trip

I would like to recommend a stay in Clos de Chinon , the house is very beautiful and comfortable , We enjoyed in the garden and the pool area. We hope to come back. We stayed 4 nights , Barbara and Jonathon looked after us and cooked for us very tasty food.

  • Overall and excellent experience in an amazing property hosted by great people !

Posted by Paul S. on 29/08/2015

I would like to recommend a stay with Jonathan and Barbara at their wonderful property in Gensac – Clos de Chinon.
I stayed there in August 2015 with my family and friends and cannot speak highly enough of our experience. Jonathan and Barbara are wonderful hosts in their amazing property.
The house is spacious, beautifully furnished, with comfortable living areas and great wifi so you can stay connected. The gardens and pool area are superb but the highlight for me was the fantastic kitchen and al fresco dining areas.
Nothing is too much trouble for Jonathan and Barbara and they were wonderfully accommodating with great knowledge of the local areas especially recommendations to high quality local restaurants, markets, villages, wine tours and even an amazing patissiere course you just have to do !

  • Fantastic family holiday property & destination

Posted by Gail S on 30/07/2015

Clos de Chinon was the perfect destination for us to take our 3 sons and their partners! It is an extremely high calibre, roomy, eclectic yet classy house, with 4 huge, beautiful bedrooms, all with gorgeous en-suite bathrooms.
The kitchen is very well equipped, with 2 range cookers for easy cooking for 8 people.
The pool area is lovely and exceptionally well maintained by Jonathan, although you never see him doing it!
Barbara and Jonathan were on site, very friendly but discreet also.
We visited many chateau's as this was mainly a wine tasting/learning experience for the family, and it is ideally located for this. We also booked kayaks locally and paddled down the Dordogne for a couple of hours in the sunshine!
The gorgeous village is 10 minutes walk down the lane, with a boulangerie and epicerie available, and a wine bar and restaurant.
We would definitely recommend Clos de Chinon and would love to return one day.

  • The perfect week at a glorious country house

Posted by Adele Knox on 13/07/2015

My husband and I, together with our two grown up children stayed at this glorious country house in Gensac which is not far from Bordeaux. The house sits in beautiful grounds and has all the creature comforts to ensure a perfect holiday. Despite the fact that there was a heat wave during our stay, the house always remained pleasantly cool. There is a fabulous terrace with swimming pool, barbecue and even a pizza oven.
The owners, Barbara and Jonathon, were absolutely wonderful to us during our stay. On arrival on the Saturday late afternoon we were given a warm welcome and Barbara had gone to the trouble to make sure the fridge was stocked so that we could have breakfast the following morning. On our last evening Barbara and Jonathon cooked us the most amazing dinner. They are both highly trained chefs and although we ate in some very good local restaurants our last supper was a gastronomic feast.
We all agreed that it was a perfect week away. There were pretty villages to visit but in all honesty we were happiest to be at the house enjoying all the comforts it offered. I cannot recommend this holiday more highly.

  • An exceptional stay with great memories

    Posted by Stuart on 15/12/2014

As we head toward Christmas I find myself reflecting on the year, one of my fondest memories was the time I spent with my family at Clos de Chinon. Janet, myself, our three children and their families were made incredibly welcome by Jonathan and Barbara. You really felt that you were welcome guests in their home without being invasive. They were well informed and offered advice on the local amenities and restaurants.
Last week my youngest son Ryan out of the blue said Dad I cannot remember a better meal than the one that was cooked by Jonathan and Barbara. We have all dined in the finest of restaurants and I have to say he is right. We shared a memorable evening which was complimented by Jonathan playing his classical guitar after a request from us.

  • Thanks a million for the perfect honeymoon!

    Posted by Conor on 21/10/2014

We booked our honeymoon for 2 weeks in Bordeaux at Clos De Chinon through Oliver Travels. I found the help from Oliver Travels staff excellent, they were very thorough in their detail and extremely prompt in getting back to me on any points of clarification or questions. In terms of the location in really is fantastic, we wanted a quiet and relaxing location and we got more than we expected. The house itself truly is exceptional, Barbara and Jonathan have spared nothing in the interior design of the house and it really does live up to the pictures on the website. The kitchen is amazing as are the huge bedrooms and we really felt at home. The pool area is so relaxing and the views and drive way up to the house, well I could go on and on but overall the place is a real gem and we were delighted with our choice.
What made our honeymoon really special though was our hosts, Barbara and Jonathan have a great attitude towards making the experience a relaxing one, they are there if you need anything but give you plenty of space just to enjoy the local area and the house itself, we still talk about the breakfast they made us on our first morning. Our 1 year old daughter was with us on our honeymoon and they made such a big effort to ensure she had plenty of toys and sand to play with it was so generous and appreciated.
Overall we had a great time, the location was fabulous but our hosts really made the difference, thanks a million and we would definitely recommend this to everyone.

  • Peaceful and restful and a gorgeous escape from the outside world.

Posted by Anonymous User on 20/09/2012

    Hello Barbara and John,

Thank you ever so much for the recipe. We will certainly be using this one. We did a bit of travelling after leaving you, including a lovely stop in Paris but this week our feet have properly touched down and it is back to normal life. Edward is back to school today and Isabel will be off to York University shortly to start her first year reading History. We have done a fair bit of cooking since we got home and there is no sign of it stopping. Edward's skills seem to have really taken off. This weekend we entertained my parents to a special meal to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary, and it was Edward who unaided cooked the rack of lamb for seven people to absolute perfection. My husband however has been the real surprise - Max was so inspired by your introduction to the secrets of pastry-making that he has already produced a perfectly turned out apple tart, lemon meringue pie and jam tarts! They were all excellent and he loved doing it. As for Isabel and me, our latest pleasure was to make a tower of iced, lemon cupcakes decorated with yellow roses for my parents' anniversary party.

We would like to tell you that we had a really lovely holiday at Clos des Chinon. It was peaceful and restful and a gorgeous escape from the outside world. The cooking with you was outstanding, as was the resulting meal, and we will remember it for a long time. We also really loved St Emilion and as I think we told you, the winery experience at Chateau Bienfaissance was excellent. I already knew the Bordeaux region so I am thrilled that the rest of the family have now fallen in love with it too and we all look forward to visiting again.

  • The location was beautiful and peaceful

Posted by The Aitches on 11/02/2011

We wanted to experience the countryside near St. Emilion and found this wonderful B&B by chance .... I read the reviews and took a chance and we were both delighted. We had first class service in a cozy home in the country, only about a half-hour from St. Emilion, where hotels can be pricey and touristy. This place is neither. The owners are fantastic chefs and we were served a delicious 4-course dinner, well worth the extra euros. The breakfast was fresh and plentiful! The location was beautiful and peaceful. The only thing missing was a stand-up shower stall, which we Americans are so used to. Other than that, the ambiance and decor were very tasteful.

i travelled the world for business, and have found 2 year ago the hospitality of the johnthan and barbara something rare in the hospitality business. i have been back this year, and once again the two have surprised me with the warmest, attention to detail as well as relaxed attitude in providing 5 star service in all aspects of our stay, while at the same time make you feel at home. i hope to make my visits there a costant feature of my future years, not only to be back as guest, but having feeling to be back as a friend.

  • Ideal for getting away from the hustle of everyday life

Posted by Anonymous Guest on 03/02/2011

My family and I stayed here during a recent half term break and this charming, forgive me - I don't normally do cliches, hotel proved a lovely base to explore the Dordogne and surrounding area. It has recently been converted by a couple who ran a restaurant and delicatessen in west London that we often frequented and the attention to detail that they had on those premises they have transferred to France. When I say a small hotel, I mean small in the amount of rooms, not the size of them. The space, both in the rooms, communal areas and grounds, is very conducive for a relaxing break and this is complimented by its location on the edge of small village about 30 minutes from Bergerac airport (I would recommend hiring a car). The region is very historical, Sir John Talbot met his demise nearby, and ideal for walking and generally getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

  • We'll be back

Posted by Penny D on 01/02/2011

We stayed for 3 nights and found the stay delightful. The rooms are a tasteful mix of traditional french and modern chic. Everything is spotless and our en-suite was nearly the size of our large bedroom. It was great to lounge around the pool during the day and discuss the menu for dinner, over drinks with our hosts. Jonathan and Barbara are exceptional chefs who go to great lenghts to give you food that you will love. We recommend stuffed squid, prawns with chorizo or rack of lamb. We were well looked after and we'll be back.

  • Long weekend in August

Posted by Pam W on 14/01/2011

We stayed for a long weekend in August as this was one of the nearest places to a wedding we were attending. I think we got lucky. Thanks to Jonathon and Barbara we had a fantastic holiday rather than a rushed visit for our friends big day. Situated in a rural setting surrounded by vineyards you need a car. If you have transport then you are no more than 30 minutes from a number of great places to visit. Even Bordeaux isn't too far. We found it very relaxing - I wish we could have stayed longer and enjoyed relaxing with the cats by the pool. Jonathon and Barbara are fantastic hosts, and my goodness you won't starve! Breakfast was fit for the Gods never mind royalty. Eating in the tranquility of the garden taking our time talking it felt more like staying with friends. The rooms are very stylish and quirky antiques are so interesting. We ate (in the evening) once during our stay - a fantastic event. The food made no compromises - even though the electricity was out for a bit of the day due to storms which must have made cooking difficult. I will always remember my first oysters by candlelight :). We made 1 mistake - only eating here once. Next time we will eat in house far more if these 2 great chefs don't mind. Thank you both for a great holiday.

  • We stayed for 2 nights of complete indulgence

Posted by Mark A on 07/01/2011

We stayed for 2 nights of complete indulgence. Barbara and Jonathon looked after us and there wasn't anything which was too much trouble. They cooked for us and both breakfast and the evening meal were lovingly prepared - the food as we remember from Chinon was heavenly! We left with some very special memories and felt very much at home in the house and loved the beautiful suites. We even got to use the pool at the house! Would definitely recommend a trip to Clos de Chinon (and a return trip for sure!).
