Location
About the surrounding area of Villa PerneraWith highlights such as the Cape Greco Peninsula and National Forest Park, south-eastern Cyprus is not to be missed. From stunning beaches to botanical gardens, theme parks and world-class nightlife, this diverse region offers something for all tastes.
Just south of Protaras, Cape Greco is the place to be for water-sports lovers, with snorkelling, off-boat swimming and cliff diving among popular pursuits. The sea caves and the Blue Lagoon with its clear waters create a dramatic setting that draws many visitors. Cape Greco National Park is also good for hiking, with various routes having been planned out.
Many more wonderful beaches line the coast, such as Green Bay and Konnos Beach, and you will often have the chance to try water-sports like scuba-diving and jet-skiing. Like Cape Greco, Fig Tree Bay is a high-profile destination, previously voted one of Europe’s best beaches.
Protaras is used to visitors, so all kinds of things to do have been arranged. You can join organised food or wine tours which showcase the region’s best delicacies, or hop onboard a boat trip and explore the coast. There are also numerous places to eat, drink and shop, so you won’t need to go far to find the things you need.
About an hour’s drive up the coast, Famagusta is known for the ‘ghost town’ area, Varosha, which has remained uninhabited and closed off since residents fled the Turkish invasion in 1974. This once-glamorous area has become something of a curiosity, partly decaying and partly remaining much as it was left at the time. While you’re not allowed in, you can look from a distance, making this one of the area’s more unlikely historic attractions.
For something completely different, Ayia Napa serves up fun for the whole family, with amusement parks, a water-park, casual dining restaurants and sea-faring adventures on its pirate ship and Yellow Submarine. The resort also has some historic sights, like its 16th-century monastery and ancient Makronissos Tombs, while other points of cultural interest including the impressive ocean-facing Sculpture Park.
About 35 minutes’ drive from Protaras, you’ll find the CyHerbia Botanical Park, with beautiful, fragrant gardens and a maze. In summer, the park hosts the Lavender Festival which is well worth seeing, and smelling.
In Larnaca, you will find the calming Salt Lake, an important area of wetland which hosts numerous birds, including flamingos. The marina, medieval fort and the Church of Saint Lazarus are among this large city’s highlights, along with the Camel Park with more than 100 animals and birds.

Best Suited For: All AgesCyprus is an excellent family destination, with loads to see and do around Protaras and beyond. Water-sports and boat trips make the most of the stunning coastal location, and you’ll find restaurants, an aquarium and lots of beautiful beaches around this popular resort.
The rugged sea caves and clear waters of the Blue Lagoon are amongst nearby Cape Greco’s unmissable features. The National Forest Park is also well worth exploring, and is perfect for walking and cycling.
Whatever the kids are into, they are sure to find it in Ayia Napa. There are lots of watery attractions here, too – the big WaterWorld theme park is just the start, with the Black Pearl pirate ship and Yellow Submarine both great ways of getting out on the sea and having fun at the same time. The Black Pearl offers food and a pirate show, while the Yellow Submarine goes on a journey to the sea caves and lets kids see the fish swimming beneath the boat through its portholes.
Also in Ayia Napa, the Parko Paliatso Luna Park is an amusement park with all sorts of games and rides, with something suitable for all ages. The Dolfins Luna Park is aimed at younger kids, with a cute Disney Room and a mini-train among its many attractions. Next to WaterWorld, you will also find a go-karting track called EMW, which is great for those aged 12 and over – adults included.
For something more educational, there’s the Thalassa Museum – an impressive museum based around the theme of the sea. Inside, you’ll find a life-size replica of an ancient ship, a reconstruction of a shipwreck and much more. Ayia Napa’s Sculpture Park may also stir the imagination of curious kids – the free-to-visit site is about 20 minutes’ walk from Thalassa.
Head a bit further and you could visit the CyHerbia Botanical Park & Labyrinth. With its beautiful woodlands and gardens, it’s a stunning place which holds many events throughout the year, including a Fairy Festival in spring, a Lavender Festival in summer, and Halloween-style pumpkin carving in autumn.
Near Larnaca, there’s another big-hitter in the shape of the Camel Park in Mazotos. It’s not just camels you’ll see – this park has everything from llamas and lemurs to goats, birds and ponies, as well as bumper cars, a rodeo bull, cinema, mini-golf and picnic area. There’s a lot more, including the chance to ride a camel, at Europe’s biggest camel park.
Larnaca is packed with family entertainment, so head into town for the K Max centre where there’s a big indoor playground, multiplex cinema, fast food and ten-pin bowling. And if you’re willing to drive as far as Limassol, you’ll find an even bigger water-park – Fasouri Watermania – open during the summer
