Unique and beautiful are the words best used to describe Malena Lighthouse, an absolutely stunning 3 bedroom accommodation that sleeps up to six guests. This rustic style white stone building is set high on the rocks, offering tranquil surroundings and view of an endless blue sea. This 2 storey working lighthouse features a spacious open-plan living room and kitchen-diner. The white stone walls contrast beautifully with exposed ceiling beams and wooden floors, and furniture is handsomely crafted in light coloured wood, including a dining table that seats 8. The sofas are cosy and deep in a shade of pearl-grey and scattered with cushions and throws accented in light turquoise. The windows which offer absolutely incredible sea views are dressed in delicate white lace and bathe the whole space in light, which adds a touch of classic romance to this stunning rustic fashioned room.

Sweeping around the corner from the dining area, and out of sight of the living quarters is the kitchen. The floor and walls transition here into a cool grey stone, and there is a large open wood-burning fire, complete with baskets of logs and wood pellets. The kitchen features fresh white kitchen units and a fridge freezer, as well as a 4-ring gas hob and plenty of storage space.

The ground floor also houses one of the 3 double bedrooms, consisting of a white wrought iron framed bed, beautifully crafted furniture in lightly distressed wood, and those incredibly exposed beams. The walls are and bedding is a crisp white, and there is white linen at the windows, which beautifully frame the glittering turquoise sea. Upstairs the other double bedrooms follow the same colour scheme, with plenty of fresh white, light wood, and wooden floors. Apex ceilings and exposed beams add to the rustic beach aesthetic, and of course, there are those spectacular views to enjoy from every window.

There is a bathroom located on each floor and both feature shower facilities consisting of a rain head shower as well as a handheld shower attachment, basins and a toilet. The walls are natural grey stone and there are beamed ceilings and portions of exposed brickwork which give the rooms a real authentically rural feel. Framed mirrors, wall art and soft contemporary lighting fixtures all bring a modern touch and make these very raw natural spaces feel warm and homely.

Outside guests will be enchanted by Malena Lighthouse’s beautiful location, where you can listen to the waves crashing against the cliffs, breathe in the sea air, and watch fishing boats on the horizon. Guests will find sun loungers at their disposal, as well as a giant daybed, sheltered under its own canopy. There is also a shaded dining table that seats 8, a charcoal bbq, and an outdoor kitchen area, which makes eating alfresco highly recommended!

  • Malena Lighthouse is a solar-powered property, and so there is no air-conditioning, washer, dryer, or oven - just a gas stove and outdoor charcoal bbq.

Malena Lighthouse is only 4km from the nearest village but is its own little piece of secluded paradise, which makes it the ideal accommodation for those who truly want to get away from it all and unwind and relax. Just a few minutes away from the lighthouse is the island of Levan, and the family who owns the property will take you across on their boat so you can enjoy the quiet sandy beach, and the Dreams & Sand beach bar and grill, where you’ll be able to indulge in delicious freshly cooked meals and refreshments. The lighthouse is the perfect home away from home all year round; winters can be spent taking walks and exploring the beautiful area of Istria before cosying up in front of the fireplace, and in the summer why not scuba dive down to the sunken boat located in front of the lighthouse, or head further afield to hire bicycles, play tennis, or surf.

The town of Medulin is just a few km away and here guests will find a plethora of beach bars and restaurants, including the quirkily-decorated ‘Salt & Pepper’, and ‘Octopus’, which is located right by the sea. There are also ice cream vendors and souvenir shops, and on the outskirts of the town a large supermarket, ideal if you need to stock up on food and drink. There are also pharmacies and ATM machines to be found in the town.

Region

Pula, located on the southern tip of Croatia's Istrian Peninsula, is a city with a rich history, stunning natural beauty, and a vibrant cultural scene. Exploring the city's old town, you'll find charming narrow streets, historic buildings, and picturesque squares. A stroll through the heart of the city allows visitors to immerse themselves in its unique blend of architectural styles, from Baroque palaces to Venetian facades.

Pula is a city steeped in history, with its roots dating back to Roman times. The most iconic symbol of the city is the Pula Arena, a remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheater. Built during the 1st century AD, it is one of the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world and one of Croatia’s most famous sights. Visitors can explore the galleries, stand on the arena floor, and even attend various events, including concerts and festivals held within its ancient walls.

The Istrian Peninsula is known for its stunning coastline, and Pula boasts numerous pristine beaches and coves. One of the most popular spots is Kamenjak, a protected natural park featuring rugged cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and diverse marine life. Nature enthusiasts can hike or cycle through the park's trails and enjoy breathtaking vistas of the Adriatic Sea. The coastal location is also ideal for water-based activities. Scuba diving enthusiasts can explore underwater caves and shipwrecks, while sailing and windsurfing are popular options for those seeking an adrenaline rush.

Just a short drive from Pula, the seaside town of Medulin offers a lovely promenade along the coast. You can take a leisurely walk, rent bicycles, or enjoy an ice cream by the sea. The shallow waters here make it a great spot for kids to play and swim.

For more family-friendly beaches, Verudela, Valkane, and Ambrela are all excellent options, offering playground facilities and water sports for older kids. Verudula beach is the home of Pula Aquarium which features a variety of Adriatic Sea creatures, including fish, seahorses, and various sea plants. The aquarium also has a touch tank, where children can get hands-on with the marine life!

Just a short boat ride from Pula is a collection of islands that make up Brijuni National Park. The park offers a unique combination of untouched nature, diverse flora and fauna, and historical sites. Visitors can explore the enchanting landscapes, visit the safari park, and explore the ruins of Roman villas and ancient churches. The park has golf carts available for touring, making it easily accessible for families with young children.

No visit to Pula is complete without indulging in the flavours of Istrian cuisine. The region is renowned for its truffles, olive oil, and world-class wines. Local restaurants offer a wide array of dishes that incorporate these prized ingredients. Be sure to try traditional Istrian dishes such as fuži (pasta) with truffles, maneštra (a hearty bean soup), and fresh seafood prepared in various ways.

Istria is also famous for its winemaking, and Pula is an excellent starting point for exploring local vineyards. Istrian wines, particularly Malvazija and Teran, are known for their unique character and are often paired with Istrian delicacies, creating a delightful culinary experience.

Whether you're exploring the ancient Roman heritage, relaxing on pristine beaches, or indulging in Istrian cuisine, Pula offers a unique and unforgettable Croatian adventure.

A ground floor bedroom and shower room provide convenience to those who don’t want to navigate stairs with small children, and there is a baby cot available on request. Outside the villa kids will love to explore the surrounding areas, and there are plenty of areas of grassland and of course stunning sea views to enjoy. It should be noted that there are some rocky areas of slightly uneven ground, and the lighthouse is located on the top of cliffs, so guests will want to be sure that little ones are properly supervised.

Families holidaying at Malena Lighthouse will find plenty to do if they stay close to home; there are rocks and cliffs to explore, waves and boats to watch, and bbq’s to enjoy. For those wanting to venture out a little further, the Istria region of Croatia has plenty to offer those travelling with children. The family-orientated resort of Medulin is nearby and is within easy distance of the architectural sights of Pula.

Medulin features a 1km stretch of sandy beach called Bijeca, which is reasonable shallow and offers the opportunity to rent sun loungers and umbrellas, making it ideal for families with young children. The main promenade of the town is home to many family-friendly restaurants, cafes, and ice cream parlours, as well place that you can hire bicycles suitable for the whole family.

Children will love the Aquarium Pula, which combines the richness of the Adriatic sea with the military history of the area. Situated within the 130-year-old fort ‘Verudela’ the aquarium now houses hundreds of fish species from the northern and southern portions of the Adriatic, several tropical and freshwater species, and fish from Croatian lakes and rivers. The secrets of the aquatic are waiting to be discovered in the rooms, tunnels and moat of the once-mighty fort, including sunfish, eagle rays, and several sharks and tropical shark species. Educational activities at the aquarium include an integrated presentation of the region’s history, as well as information on the importance of marine life conservation. The sea turtle rescue centre is housed at Aquarium Pula and has initiated many programs to protect the species, which is among one of the most threatened in the world.
