The stunning island of Hvar is a mix of idyllic beaches, historic small towns and beautiful countryside. Within easy reach of numerous other islands, it offers the most upscale escape in Croatia.

The landscape of Hvar is characterised by vineyards, olive groves and fragrant fields of lavender. These are an attraction in themselves and make for a lovely day out if you want to get out of town. In summer, there’s a big festival dedicated to the island’s lavender where it’s celebrated in all sorts of events.

If you prefer to head for the beach, there is lots of choice. While Hvar has a small beach near the town, the best ones are a little further out. Wander down to Pokinji Dol first, then on to the amazing Mekićevica. If you would rather go by sea, it’s easy to take a water taxi instead. Go a bit further and stop by Milna or the secluded bay at Sveta Nedjelja.

It’s well worth setting some time aside for Hvar’s Old Town. A small town that attracts big crowds, you will find a good range of cafés, bars and restaurants to spend your days, as well as historic sights. The main square is right beside the landmark St Stephen’s Cathedral, while the huge fortress, Fortica, towers over everything. If you feel energetic, you might want to head up there as the view back down is particularly fine. Elsewhere, you’ll find a Benedictine Convent and Franciscan Monastery.

It’s not all about the past though, as Hvar is also big on sporting challenges and top-flight nightlife. The Hvar Adventure centre will take care of your climbing, cycling and sky diving needs (among others), while celebrated clubs like Carpe Diem bring the party to the waterside. More musically eclectic, the Hvar Summer Festival takes you right through the season with performances in venues all over town.

If you would like to visit somewhere more serene, the rest of the island is generally quieter than Hvar Town. Stari Grad is the island’s oldest, and it’s pleasant to potter around its streets, squares and harbourside. From here, you can also catch a ferry over to Split. If you have other mainland adventures in mind, you can disembark closer to Makarska and Mount Biokovo if you head down to Sucaraj on Hvar’s eastern coast. Ferries cross from here to Drvenik, around 30 minutes from Makarska by car.

The island of Hvar stands out as one of Croatia's most enchanting destinations - a picturesque paradise that seamlessly combines natural beauty, historical charm and a lively cultural scene. The sun-drenched island’s stunning landscapes provide a picture-perfect backdrop to a whole wealth of
unforgettable experiences.

At the heart of the island is the port town of Hvar, a historic gem known for its well-preserved architecture and timeless allure. Take a wander through the traffic-free labyrinth of narrow streets, where you can soak up the charm of the island. The central square of Hvar Town is a bustling hub surrounded by centuries-old buildings and lively cafes - it’s a popular spot to enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine from one of the many cafes and restaurants. The square is also home to the imposing St. Stephen's Cathedral, a beautiful example of Dalmatian Renaissance architecture.

Overlooking the town is the Hvar Fortress, a medieval citadel with a history dating back to the 13th century. The fortress is worthy of a visit for the epic panoramic views that stretch across the town and the Adriatic Sea. The ascent is especially rewarding it at sunset, when you can watch the town's
lights sparkle below.

Heading inland just a few kilometres from Hvar Town, the village of Velo Grablje is famous for its lavender fields. Visit during the summer and you'll be treated to the sight and scent of the vast fields in full bloom. The island is also celebrated for its vineyards and olive groves, producing some of Croatia's best wines and olive oils. Many wineries and oil mills offer tastings and tours, allowing
you to sample these local delights while learning about traditional production methods.

Just a short boat ride from the harbour of Hvar are the Pakleni Islands, a group of islets renowned for their pristine beaches, hidden coves, and emerald sea. The idyllic surroundings offer a tranquil escape from the bustle of the main island, making it a favoured day trip destination. Explore hidden
bays, discover secluded beaches, and enjoy water sports in this unspoiled paradise. The uninhabited resort of Palmižana on the island of Sveti Clement is a particular highlight - a hidden oasis known for its lush botanical gardens and crystal-clear water.

For outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, Hvar's natural beauty provides a picturesque playground. Hvar offers numerous cycling trails for both beginners and experienced riders. The island's diverse terrain is ideal for exploring the charming villages, olive groves, and vineyards on two wheels. Or for a unique perspective of the islands scenic beauty, you can experience the Adriatic up close and paddle along the dramatic coastline in a kayak, discovering coves and sea caves.

Hvar, is a Mediterranean paradise that promises an array of unforgettable experiences. Whether you're wandering through the historic streets of Hvar Town, discovering hidden coves on the Pakleni Islands, or savouring local wines and delicacies, the island offers a blend of cultural exploration, natural beauty, and relaxation that's hard to match.

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Teens

There’s a lot for the kids to enjoy on the island of Hvar. The beaches are particularly beautiful in this part of Croatia, so take them for a dip in the clear waters of Pokonji Dol or Mekićevica, both just down the coast from Hvar Town. Alternatively, take a boat out to the glorious Pakleni Islands. It won’t take long to reach the stunning beaches of these wooded isles (about 15 minutes by water taxi), and there are some lovely restaurants there too. Other beach options include Milna, Dubovica or peaceful Sveta Nedjelja, but you’ll be spoilt for choice all over the island.

Hvar Town offers some interesting historic sights. Take the kids up to the mighty Fortica which dwarfs everything below. The climb will be rewarded by some spectacular views, and there’s a café and a small museum up there as well. Hvar also has one of the largest squares in Dalmatia, now with lots of restaurant terraces, which is a nice place to visit. You can also pop into the adjacent St Stephen’s Cathedral and Episcopal Museum.

Kids who love music will be able to broaden their tastes during the excellent Hvar Summer Festival. Running from June until September, this big festival offers performances in all sorts of styles including jazz, classical and traditional Croatian klapa singing. Concerts take place at indoor and outdoor venues around town.

Another great summer activity is seeing the island’s lavender fields in full bloom. An annual festival in Velo Grablje puts on all sorts of lavender-themed events, or you can just go and take a look – the fields are located between Velo Grablje and Brusje, about 7km from Hvar Town.

If you take a ferry trip from the port of Stari Grad, it’s worth stopping to have a look at the town itself. One of Europe’s oldest towns, there’s a pretty waterfront area and plenty of historic buildings.  Kids can take a break in Park Vorba or enjoy Stari Grad’s inflatable water park. A ferry ride across to Split will introduce them to an amazing array of attractions, including a semi-submarine, a large aquarium, the eccentric Froggyland museum and huge Diocletian’s Palace.
