Nestled on a lush green headland between two enchanting beaches, with views of the sparkling turquoise sea below, the location of Tamarind Hills perfectly encapsulates all the stunning natural beauty that Antigua has to offer. With a coastline encompassing peaceful bays, coral reefs and magical blue lagoons, the island gives families and couples alike the chance to explore the wonders of the ocean whilst soaking up the Caribbean sunshine!

The nation of Antigua and Barbuda is made up of its two namesake sister islands, as well as several smaller islets. Antigua is the nation’s largest island at just 281 km². The fact that you can easily travel across the island by car makes it the perfect place for a relaxed Caribbean getaway. With 365 beaches, one for every day of the year, you will always be spoiled for choice when it comes to your next dip in the ocean!

Each day you will be tempted to stay close to home, on the silky white sands of Ffryes Beach and Darkwood Beach. Secluded by green hilltops and popular with tourists and locals alike, both beaches are well-known beauty spots. Swim and snorkel in the crystalline waters here, before stopping for lunch at a local restaurant.

Slightly further afield, Nelson’s Dockyard National Park is one of five national parks in Antigua. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this eighteenth-century British naval dockyard is an area of great historical significance on the island, as well as a popular venue for maritime events and activities. Nelson's Dockyard offers visitors plenty of fantastic trekking trails, with breathtaking sights along the way.

Consider visiting Shirley Heights, a restored military lookout with panoramic views and the home of a famous Sunday evening party, where visitors are invited to come and take part in the festivities. Listen to live Caribbean steel drum bands, try some of the local food and rum punch and discover amazing sunset views of the island.

Devil’s Bridge is another national park that is well worth a visit. The bridge itself is a natural arch composed of limestone rock, formed over the course of many thousands of years. With geysers and blowholes surrounding the bridge as the waves of the Atlantic crash against the rocks, this is a bracing adventure that will leave you in awe of the serene beaches you have just left behind.

Visitors young and old will be delighted by Antigua’s amazing landscapes and treasure trove of coastal activities. From swimming and snorkeling on idyllic beaches to rainforest trekking and exploring local towns and villages, the island has a myriad of activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Watersports are widely available throughout Antigua, with sea kayaking and kitesurfing among the most popular. There are numerous boat tours also available, including tours to Antigua’s sister island, Barbuda. Some ninety minutes across the water, one of Barbuda’s highlights is the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, home to thousands of exotic red-throated birds. Back in Antigua, you can visit the island’s wonderful donkey sanctuary, where children are encouraged to feed the friendly animals.

A day spent hiking around Nelson’s Dockyard is another great way to get closer to nature. Ascend to the stunning panoramic views of Shirley Heights on a quiet weekday afternoon, for a scenic hike that everyone will remember. This is a relatively easy hike but do make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and pack plenty of water. You will find handy trail maps available to download online.

For an introduction to a truly important facet of Antiguan culture, why not take everyone to watch a local cricket match? The island is devoted to its national sport, which is played everywhere, though official matches tend to take place on weekends. Later, drive to St. John’s, where older children will enjoy the vibrancy and colour of the island’s capital. Here, families can visit any of the local restaurants to sample some of the island’s delicacies.

Head out for a coastal drive and within twenty minutes you will reach the Antigua Rainforest Canopy Park, where a thrilling day of rainforest adventure awaits! With experienced instructors to guide you at every point along the way, you will cross suspension bridges and rope obstacles, ziplining above the tree-tops and crisscrossing a stunning gorge. Don’t forget to take a break in the magical twin tree houses tucked away in the dense rainforest. This is an exhilarating day out that varies in intensity, with a range of family-friendly eco-activities available and options to suit all age groups.

Later, head back to Darkwood Beach for a relaxing sunset swim and a delicious dinner together. Once the stars come out, everyone will be sure to sleep soundly after another day of fun and adventure!
