Poppit Cottage boasts an incredible location overlooking the fabulous Cardigan Bay and the glorious Poppit Sands. It is just a few minutes drive to Cardigan, and you are very close to the invigorating and spectacular Wales Coast Path. The path is well established with clear signing and awe-inspiring walking, especially from Cardigan to Borth. This incredible path offers such a variety of walks including seaside saunters along the fronts of coastal towns and villages, literary trails such as the Dylan Thomas Trail around New Quay, delightful strolls along country lanes bordered with ancient hedgerows full of wildflowers, invigorating walks across wild headlands enjoying stunning views of the rugged Cardigan Bay coastline, challenging mountain hikes in the remote uplands of the Cambrian Mountains or slow riverside rambles along the Teifi, Aeron Rheidol and Ystwyth valleys. If you want to walk certain parts of the path and don’t want to drive, you can take one of Cardigan Bay’s useful little buses. Cardigan Bay also boasts some amazing cycle routes so you may want to bring your bikes. You can hire some from New Image Bikes, Cardigan if you do not want to take your own.

Cardigan is the gateway to the stunning landscape of the deeply wooded Teifi Valley as well as the coastal paths. This gorgeous ancient town sits on the estuary of the River Teifi where you can kayak and canoe. At 79km it is one of the longest rivers in Wales, starting at Teifi Pools high up near Tregaron. The section from Llechryd Bridge to the mouth of the river at Poppit Sands is tidal, so it makes a wonderful half-day canoe trip if there is enough water. It is easy to check the tides. It is also very popular with anglers as it is ranked as one of the best sea trout rivers in Europe. There is an abundance of wildlife, including otters.

Cardigan’s unspoilt townscape and rich heritage are wonderful. You will find a thriving culture of arts and crafts, events and music festivals. Cardigan was the county town of the historic county of Cardiganshire. Now it is the second largest town in Ceredigion, with Aberystwyth being the largest. Cardigan is such a good base to discover Ceredigion and also Pembrokeshire to the south.

Along the Cardigan Bay, you will find miles of tranquil, unspoilt coastline including secluded, quiet coves, award-winning beaches, towering cliffs decorated with early summer flowers and jewel-like islands with clear water perfect for the visiting dolphins, porpoises and seals. The National Trust’s Penbryn Beach is gorgeous and definitely worth the hike from the car park. Tresaith Beach is very popular for its waterfall that cascades over the cliffs. Aberporth Beach offers the best of both worlds. It is stunningly beautiful, and there are pleasure boats, sailing boats, kayaks and canoes. You will also probably see fishermen unloading crate after crate of giant spider crabs and other sea fish. You will find rock pools exposed at low tide, and the clifftop walks boast extensive views as far as the Lleyn Peninsula. Bottlenose dolphins are frequently seen close to shore in Aberporth, hence the fabulous wooded carving overlooking the beach.

Luxury self-catering holiday accommodation in Brecon Beacons

Oliver's Travels proudly presents an outstanding selection of luxury cottages, retreats, farmhouses and manor houses that are scattered like confetti across the enchanting landscapes of the Brecon Beacons. You will discover heather-cloaked mountain ranges, wildflower meadows doing a happy dance and a medley of historic castles playing hide-and-seek with babbling brooks. Welcome to a paradise of blissful serenity and Instagram-worthy moments!

The Brecon Beacons is the beating heart of Welsh countryside magic. It is a place where the hills are alive with the sound of superb walking and cycling trails and visitors don their most fashionable walking boots to conquer the four mammoth mountain ranges. Pen y Fan, the Beyoncé of peaks, stands tall, beckoning adventurers to scale its heights and brag about conquering the highest peak in southern Britain. If you are not into mountain conquests, fear not, the region offers the scenic wonders of Offa's Dyke Path and the Taff Trail, like nature's catwalk through 520 square miles of National Park glamour.

But it's not all about the mountains. This magical realm is a patchwork quilt of fields watched over by majestic peaks. Castles crumble in the most picturesque ways, ancient cottages gossip about centuries gone by and rivers babble tales of adventure. Carreg Cennen Castle strikes a dramatic pose on a limestone precipice, sharing medieval stories with anyone willing to listen. The enchanting ruins of Llanthony Priory are nestled in the secluded Vale of Ewyas, exuding an air of tranquility while Cyfarthfa Castle proudly presents its museum, gallery and miniature railway.

Aquatic enthusiasts can hop into canoes and enjoy the delights of the River Usk or the River Wye, while star gazers can enjoy front-row seats in the International Dark Sky Reserves. Horse riders can gallop until their hearts are content across vast open moorlands.

For those who prefer to keep their feet on the cobbles, Brecon, the market town extraordinaire, or the bookish wonderland of Hay on Wye, famous for its literary festival, are ready to charm. The lovely Crickhowell sits on the banks of the River Usk with it admirable Georgian architecture and a backdrop of lush green hills. Offering a treasure trove of charm, Llangorse and Talybont-on-Usk beckon with their thatched cottages and a sense of timelessness that transports visitors to a bygone era.

The Brecon Beacons is not just a place. It is a multifaceted jewel where natural wonders, historical landmarks and charming towns converge in a harmonious dance. So whether you are scaling peaks, exploring castles, strolling through quaint villages or stargazing like a celestial paparazzo, the Brecon Beacons promises an adventure that screams, "Wales, you beauty!"

While the image of lush valleys and a laid-back lifestyle are right at the heart of a holiday in Wales, don’t think stunning landscapes and a bit of relaxation are the only thing on offer in this beautiful country. Don’t believe us?

You will not be able to leave the Cardigan Bay without a trip to look out for bottlenose dolphins and porpoises. There are many from New Quay and other quays along the coast. From New Quay, you can take a one hour cruise passing Birds Rock, The Caves, Cwntydu and Seals Bay. The two-hour cruise takes you to these places as well and as far as the beautiful peninsula of Yns Locktyn. At New Quay, there are two sandy beaches and also watersports tuition.

The Cardigan Coastal Farm Park is very close by and an excellent afternoon trip for families. Children can pet lots of animals and help to feed them. There is a playground, sandpit, lots of lego and an indoor play area if the weather isn’t too good.

A totally different adventure is the Silver Mountain Experience at Llywernog, an authentic 18th-century silver mine in the beautiful Cambrian Mountains of mid-Wales. Dare-devils can enter the Black Chasm, it's scary underground experience. Steeped in myths and legends, this fascinating experience has tumbling streams, mysterious forests and long-abandoned mine workings.
