Location
About the surrounding area of Villa GorgeiaAccessible via a road bridge, the island of Lefkada is full of beautiful beaches and lends itself to outdoor activity. In the north of the island, you’ll find the main town, also called Lefkada – in fact, the bridge to Lefkada takes you directly to it. A bustling town with a pretty marina, it’s full of café terraces and enjoys spectacular mountain views.
All the amenities you could need are here, and an array of restaurants make it a great place to go out to eat. A few museums, such as the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Angelos Sikelianos – housed in the former home of this Greek poet – provide a flavour of the local culture. Just outside the town, you will find Agia Mavra castle. Dating from the 14th century, this castle was originally built to defend Lefkada from pirates and has had an eventful history ever since.
It is perhaps the beaches which are the island’s main draw, as there is no shortage of idyllic coastal locations here. South of Lefkada Town, you’ll find the small pebble beach of Lygia which enjoys lovely views back to the mainland. The eastern coast offers more cute pebble beaches at Nikiana, about 10km from Lefkada Town, while Nidri is a lively spot with bars, tavernas and clubs nearby. It also hosts the Ionian Regatta sailing competition each September.
The west coast provides some of the most beautiful beaches of all. The popular Porto Katsiki with its white sands and turquoise waters is well worth a visit, as is Egremni around 2.5km to the north. Other west coast gems include Kathisma, a great water sports beach surrounded by cliffs and wooded hills, and idyllic Milos. Pretty Agios Nikitas and Agios Ioannis – with its ideal kite-surfing conditions – are also good options.
Around 35km long, Lefkada offers a few more notable attractions. The island produces some excellent wine, and the Lefkaditiki Winery offers tours and tastings. Kerasia Waterfall and Karoucha Cave are among the isle’s natural wonders, while the Fabbrica Olive Museum teaches you more about Lefkada’s history of olive oil making.
There are numerous charming villages dotting Lefkada’s coast, and Sivota in the south is one of these. Known for its beautiful floral displays, the colourful village is right by the harbour and offers plenty of places to stop for a drink on the waterside.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesYounger visitors have plenty to see and do around Lefkada. Days out at the beach are possible in numerous locations around the island, and many beaches have good facilities nearby. Teens will find excellent surfing opportunities too – try Vasiliki in the south of the island or Agios Ioannis in the north. Milos Beach in Agios Nikitas is another worth checking out – this extensive sandy stretch on the west coast is sure to be popular.
Kids will love Lefkada Town. The first place you’ll see when you arrive on the island, it’s a lively town full of shops, cafés and restaurants, and there’s the lovely Lygia beach too. Check out the Phonograph, Radio and Traditional Museum and the Archaeological Museum while you’re in town, as well as the spacious Central Square and the landmark Wooden Bridge. Look out for Agia Mavra Castle too, one of the most impressive historic sights on the island.
Lefkada is an amazing place to eat and drink, and kids will enjoy the local specialities just as much as you. Lefkada Town has a huge choice, with tempting honey loukoumades (a local take on doughnuts), ice cream and desserts aplenty. Pizza, grilled meats and tempting meze are easy to find, as well as dishes made with fresh fish. Many restaurants make the most of their location with beachfront terraces, so kids can enjoy playing by the sea after dinner.
There are many good options for excursions, such as the Monastery of Faneromeni which enjoys a hilltop position with lovely views of the coast. This ornate church has a small zoo in its gardens. Also worth a visit is the Fabbrica Olive Museum which will guide you through the process of producing olive oil.
Not far from here is the lovely Kerasia Waterfall, while Nidri Waterfall is another scenic spot further north. Kids can enjoy swimming in the lake as the water cascades into it. Nidri is one of the most popular villages with tourists and lies on the east coast – it’s great for boat trips to see the other islands in the area.
