A private entrance leads guests into the villa, where there is a stone and whitewashed wall living area, with a beamed ceiling. The seating area has a comfy sofa and nest of coffee tables, a desk and chair, and a flat-screen television. The adjacent indoor casual dining set is the perfect place to meet for breakfast and plan the day. There are two exquisitely appointed double bedrooms, each with queen size beds, flat-screen televisions, and beautiful ensuite marble shower rooms, complete with the obligatory complimentary amenities. On the ground floor, there is a pretty garden terrace with a patio set, ideal for a morning coffee catch up. From the kitchen access the upper terrace, where there is a six-seater dining set, with a barbeque, strategically situated for feasting alfresco.

Take the steps up to the city and sea view rooftop, where you will find your own private pool, surrounded by sun loungers. Villa Diegos can be found nestled in the charming coastal village of Kolymbari, on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Crete, in the cerulean blue waters of the Aegean Sea. The villa has rooftop views of the sea and the town, betwixt and between the Cretan countryside. Villa Diegos is thirty-six kilometres from Chania International Airport, a scenic coastal drive to your holiday home. You will find minimarts, welcoming cafes and tavernas, banks and beaches, in the picturesque village of Kolymbari, with everything you need to cater for your holiday.

The nearest part pebble, part sandy, organised Kolymbari beach is just an 8 minute walk from the villa. The northwest coast is noted for some of the most stunning beaches with fabulous facilities, especially, the white sands of Falasarna, the fun and fashionable Pachia Ammos, the hues of blues Balos, and the pink sands of Elafonisi. The nearby tourist town of Lower Platanias has souvenir stores and supermarkets, banks, bars, and restaurants, and a beautiful sandy beach, as well as a lively nightlife. Upper Platanias is perched on a hill, with panoramic sea views, and historical sites, from the Minoan period until World War II. If you are feeling sporty, there’s horse riding, tennis, and mini golf nearby, whilst walks in nature can be found around the Botanical Gardens, Lake Agia, water springs, and the backdrop mountain range.

The medieval town of Chania is only a twenty-minute drive from the villa.
Stroll down to the old port and harbour, visit the Maritime and Archeological Museums, seek solace in the Greek Orthodox Church of Agios Nikolaos, bargain in the local market, and then dine off freshly caught seafood by the seashore. For those who love hiking, the famous fifteen-kilometre Samaria Gorge runs from Omalos to Agia Roumeli, with breathtaking landscapes, rare species of wild goats, rich flora and fauna, and an abandoned village. The ancient port of Heraklion is a two-hour drive away, take a tour around the Palace of Knossos, visit the Archaeological Museum, walk the Venetian walls, stroll through the old quarter, and shop for souvenirs.

Go further afield to Vai, Crete’s easternmost tip, where you will find lush forests and a unique date palm. Explore Psychro Cave, reputedly the birthplace of Zeus, and rock climb Mount Ida to find the Ideon Cave. Sitia Geopark is three hundred and fifty square kilometres of the island’s diverse ecosystem, where you can trek through gorges, bathe on beaches, walk the wetlands, and bird watching. Hike the Richtis Gorge, stroll through streams to reach the twenty-metre waterfall, and then cool off in the inviting pool.

All aboard a boat trip, where you can scuba dive or snorkel over underwater ruins. Take the ferry from the exclusive town of Elounda to the intriguing island of Spinalonga, once a former leper colony and home to a Venetian fortress, and now an open-air museum. Visit Agios Nikolaos, a harbour town that uniquely houses a lake in its centre, with an Archaeological Museum of Minoan treasures, some great shops, and local bars and restaurants, in which to sit and watch the local life go by. Wind down with a wine-tasting tour, and don’t forget to take a bottle or two home with you.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

There’s so much for the younger members of your family to see and do when you holiday in Crete. Villa Diegos has its own private rooftop swimming pool, where your kids can play and splash all day. The nearest beach is Kolymbari beach just an 8 minute walk from the villa. This vast part sandy, part pebbly beach, extends along the coastline and is great for families, with organised sun loungers and brollies, showers, and lifeguards, and lots of friendly cafes and restaurants.

The North West coast of Crete is populated with family-friendly beaches, offering a selection of water sports, including banana boat rides, stand-up paddle boarding, and speedy jet skis. Spend the day sunbathing on the stunning pink sands of Elafonisi, an area of protected wildlife and beauty, bathe in the blue Balos Lagoon, or swim or sail out to sea, to the island of Gramvousa, where you will find an old Venetian Castle and a cave that is believed to be an ancient shipyard.

The nearby town of Platanias is a fabulous family fun holiday resort, where your children can enjoy a game of mini golf, play tennis, go horse-riding and swim and snorkel in the sea. Children love a day in the old town of Chania, where they can wander the ancient streets, and take part in the Scavenger Hunt challenge to discover local landmarks by following clues and maps on their smartphones. Saunter down to Chania harbour for a family day at sea, swim, snorkel in local bays, and enjoy a traditional meze lunch on board.

Get those legs walking with a fifteen-kilometre hike through Samaria Gorge, where they can spot the local flora and fauna, and the famous Kri-Kri goats. For the younger members of your family, there’s a shorter version of the walk, starting at the village of Agia Roumeli, and only three kilometres long. Chrispy and Limnoupolis Water Parks are the perfect places to take kids of all ages, with slippy and extreme slides, lazy rivers, swimming pools galore, a children’s playground in the pool and poolside, as well as cafes and bars. All the family can enjoy a day learning how to make traditional Greek jars at pottery classes, or mezes at cookery schools.

Take a Jeep Safari across the country on rough roads and discover traditional Greek villages and a taste of authentic Crete. For your dare-devils, there’s tandem para-gliding with professional instructors, where they can fly like an eagle over the coastline and mountains of the island. Learn the local history at the Minoan’s World 3D Museum, and enjoy a film at the 9D Movie Cinema, for some evening wind-down time.
