This really is the perfect hideaway for a family or a group of friends who would like a combination of relaxing and energetic holiday activities. The beautifully renovated 18th century farmhouse lies in a rural setting, its glorious landscaped grounds bordered by banks of sheltering trees.

Relax on the terrace or in the summer lounge by the heated swimming pool where the tennis court can be glimpsed at the end of a grassy pathway, lined by a sentinel of cypress trees. Explore the grounds and be delighted by the olive trees, the brightly coloured oleander hedges and the fragrant lavender field – take a book, coffee and croissant to sit beneath the shade of the ancient plane trees and imbibe a host of sensory delights.

The house itself provides every modern comfort and convenience whilst retaining much of its original character with carefully placed pieces of traditional furniture and artwork - in the high ceilinged sitting room is a mirror with a beautifully painted mantel above the fireplace. To preserve group harmony, you may have to draw lots for the very spacious master bedroom or the poolside annexe bedroom next to the summer lounge!

All this tranquillity rests in the alluvial plains of the Durance, in the heart of Provence and an excellent spot from which to explore the nearby hills and vineyards of Les Alpilles and the mountains of the Luberon. It’s situated near a charming little Provençal village and only a short drive away from renowned St-Rémy-de-Provence.

Cavaillon is also nearby for strolling, shopping and the tourist office - it’s known for its succulent melons in the summer and it’s worth climbing the green St Jacques’s Hill in the centre of the city for far reaching views over the surrounding plains, vineyards, hills and mountains. Also not far, hilltop Eygalières is one of the loveliest spots in Provence - there are just so many idyllic villages to visit both in Les Alpilles and the Luberon!

Family activities are plentiful, including horse riding, walking, mountain biking, canoeing and hot air ballooning. Further afield, the clear waters of the Côte Bleue, the pink flamingos of La Camargue, the UNESCO heritage sites of Avignon and many more of the wonders of Provence are within reasonably easy reach.

A short drive from a small village in the plains of the Durance River, this is an excellent spot from which to explore. You have the choice between the magnificent landscape of Les Alpilles Natural Park with its orchards, avenues of cypress trees, swathes of wild flowers and stunning hills and the extraordinary mountain ranges of the Luberon, both regions with so many idyllic villages to visit.

Nearby Cavaillon (12km) is ideal for strolling, relaxing in its terraced cafés, shopping, visiting the tourist office and buying summer melons from the markets. It also has a rich cultural heritage, hosting the most beautiful synagogue in Europe, a 12th century cathedral and many lovely old houses. In the centre of the city is the green St Jacques’s Hill which can be climbed for its great views.

Also a short drive away, St-Rémy-de-Provence (12km) is renowned for the artists who sell their work in the village galleries as well as being famous for its many eating places from homely bistros to Michelin starred restaurants. Gourmands will love the town’s famous Wednesday morning market where you can sample a variety of regional food.

Don’t miss Les Baux-de-Provence (22km), one of France’s acclaimed ‘plus beaux villages’ a medieval gem perched on a rocky outcrop or pretty Eygalières (9km) where some A-list celebrities have bought properties to escape the paparazzi. Gordes (34km) is another acclaimed village in an extraordinarily picturesque hill-top location, whose beauty has attracted many artists including Marc Chagall.

Once you have explored the local town and villages, head northwards towards the River Rhône and the city of Avignon (22km) with its winding medieval streets and two UNESCO world heritage sites, the Pope’s Palace and Saint Benezet Bridge. The weekend farmer’s, flower and flea markets sell good quality local produce and are excellent for a bargain or two.

For a spot of adventure, travel towards Arles (36km), a stepping stone to the wilderness of La Camargue with its, beaches, lagoons, rice fields, iconic white horses and pink flamingos. There are plenty of family activities here from horse riding, trekking, and quad biking to jeep tours. If you are simply longing for the blue, clear waters of the Mediterranean, just get in your car and drive southwards to the Côte Bleue, around an hour away, with vast coastline great for hiking, swimming and snorkelling.
