Wedding Venue Recommended Pool

Nowadays “the luxury of all luxuries” is silence and space in an exceptional environment, off the beaten track. Built during the 12th century, this family château is not a hotel, it's a "home away from home", overlooking the Gascogne hillside in the south west of France.

In the country of the Armagnac, foie-gras, d'Artagnan & the Three Musketeers, it is halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean sea and one and a half hours away from Spain and the Pyrenees.

Surrounded by a 4 acre park with secular trees (and squirrels!), it overlooks the Gascony region known as the “French Tuscany” due to the beauty of its vineyards and hillsides. Bathed in the warmth of this unique property that has been in the same family for four generations, you will enjoy numerous antiques and heirlooms as well as a guarantee of privacy and discretion.

The chateau is the perfect backdrop for family reunions and holidays and offers accommodation for up to 50 guests (24 in a unique dormitory). It can also host private wedding parties. The excellent acoustics of its reception area created in the former 'chais' (once the cradle of a renowned Armagnac producer) can comfortably welcome up to 500 guests. This is a unique find in this region.

*Chateau Des Nuits Blanches is available for smaller groups of 27 guests. This option does not include the White Night Space and reception areas rental.

For more than eight centuries the history of Gascony and the founder of the Chateau have been linked. It is situated in the south of beautiful Dordogne where the founder and his descendants, having settled in the southwest of France in the 12th century, left an indelible mark on the region throughout the four succeeding centuries. They were notably Crusaders or Consuls and actively participated in the construction of the villages’ fortified manor (the oldest in Gascony). They are among key figures locally to whom we have to thank for today’s legacy of fortified castles, cathedrals and colourful legends.

Later, in the 16th century, one of the descendants initiated his entourage into the rituals of Armagnac, one of the first eau-de-vie in France. At the beginning of the 20th century, the family of the present owner bought this domain and developed its own brand of Armagnac, which became a landmark in French gastronomy.

Around the Château, there is a range of outdoor activities, visits and excursions that include:
- Castelnau de Fourcès.
- Fortified villages of Larressingle.
- Collegiale de La Romieu.
- The Séviac gallo-roman villa (The most famous one in Europe).
- The numerous cathedrals and cloisters of the neighbouring towns.
- The Landes forest (the largest in Europe, created by Napoleon the 3rd).
- The Pyrenees, 1hr 30 by car.
- The Atlantic Ocean, with Biarritz, the Basque country and some of the world’s best surfing spots (2hr).
- Bordeaux and Toulouse, cities (1hr 30).
- Foie gras markets (in season).
- Walks along signposted paths (St Jacques de Compostelle pilgrim route).
- Antique and flea markets.

Owner Profile

Property Owner

How long have you owned the property?
More than 20 years.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
I cannot pretend today that I have any long lasting, or even conscious memories of the first time I set foot in Gascony. I was no more than a few months old, the second world war was about to start and my mother brought me down from Paris by car for us to take refuge with my father and his parents in this Gascony château, which has been my ancestors' family home since the beginning of the last century.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The history of this family and that of Gascony have been linked for over eight centuries. Jehan de M the first, settled in the village in the XII century, and founded the famous château. Over the next four hundred years, he and his descendants left an indelible mark on the region. They were Crusaders, local Consuls and were instrumental in building the ramparts, fortified castles and cathedrals of this ancient city. This passion for adventure, building and the finest things in life, was inherited by a later descendant, also named Jehan de Malliac. It was this XVI century heir who is believed to have first served Armagnac to his entourage in the great hall of the Château. Armagnac was first mentioned existing in the region in the XV century, thanks to the combined cask manufacturing knowledge of the Gauls, the viticultural skills of the Romans and the distillation artistry of the Moors. Finally, at the beginning of the XX century, our family acquired the Château and developed the Armagnac brand: J. De Malliac, one of the oldest in the region (1855), and gave it a top level status in french gastronomy. Still today, the heritage, reputation, and prestige of the house remain associated in Gascony, France and abroad. But things have changed; “Les Vignes de Victoire” have followed and produce for the property a superb gascon white wine (varieties ugni blanc and colombard, known at the origin of the best Armagnacs ). Today, it can be discovered in our ancient “chais” transformed into marvellous and huge reception halls, offering a reputed site for festivities in a comfortable and original setting.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
The tranquility and the discretion of the place oblige us to not reveal such information. Nevertheless, we could ad that the Armagnac produced here at the Chateau was sold in exclusivity on the Concorde plane and is also mentioned into the World Guinness Book of Records as the most expensive Armagnac ever sold.

What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received?
All guest are unique, as their wishes.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
Introduction into the Musketeers Company.

Really eat?
Foie gras with Armagnac.

Really see?
Armagnac Distillation into a private chai.

Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
This exceptional domain offers one instant respite from the world outside.  Its a universe straddling eras, a backdrop of greenery, a living artwork, a haven of peace where time suspends its flight. Just as the breeze brings us the murmur of bygone centuries, so is one transported to the very centre of a world in which the passage of time stands still. From the pictures on the walls to the fountains burbling, from the rose gardens to the old stone-walled pigeonnier, one's sense come together in harmony in a symphony of scents, sounds and colours. If your feet lead you to us one day, I will tell you the story of Gascony, Armagnac, and the musketeers.

A relatively new addition to France, the Midi-Pyrénées was created to surround the cultural capital of Toulouse in the late 1970s. You might think that its relative youth would mean the Midi-Pyrénées is short on character or identity, but remember, this is France we’re talking about – the whole country is steeped in history and tradition. Encompassing parts of Gascony, Languedoc, the Gers and several others, you’ll get a varied slice of the whole French experience here, not least if you stay at one of our beautiful chateaux in the Midi-Pyrénées! And if you want to discover the best of what the region has to offer, our Midi-Pyrénées travel guide is here to show you where to go, what to eat and how you can make the best of your break with some amazing activities.
