Some homes are utterly unique and always will be. Saumur en Blanc is one of those homes. From its location right in the centre of magical Saumur, to its soothing all-white interior and its rather glamourous owner; a talented and well-known interior designer from New York.

Saumur en Blanc is found through a private gate, set away from the road, in its own tranquil and private garden filled with jasmine, rosemary and lavender. The senses are immediately awoken and then surprised with the glimpse of a swimming pool in this private oasis.

The white décor and furnishings create a very calming ambience in this quirky and original stone townhouse full of surprises; staircases leading up to lofts, a baby-grand piano, a bathroom with claw-foot tub and fireplace and a little independent pool house on the terrace. The kitchen is worthy of its renowned eno-gastronomic location, with its professional ‘La Canche’ stove, two dishwashers, large fridge-freezer and American gadgets and appliances.

Guests can also relax and take advantage of many helpful services, such as a transfers, pre-arrival shopping, babysitting and even a private chef.

Saumur is of course famous for its delicious wine, but this small town is also known for its excellent restaurants, speciality shops, music festivals and a multitude of activities, including canoeing and kayaking, which keep it vibrant and exciting as well as beautiful. All of these delights are on the doorstep and just an easy stroll away. Not far from the town are also wineries, artisanal beer producers, châteaux, a national horse-riding school, bike and walking trails, museums and much more.

Saumur en Blanc combines so many unique and original qualities to create an out-of-the-ordinary home in a special location, both of which will leave guests enchanted.

The town has also gained a reputation for its excellent restaurants as well as its delicious sparkling white wine, which you can sample and purchase at a number of spots in the area.

The fairytale Château Saumur has a stunning location and is worthy of a visit, then in the summer take a boat trip up the river for some rest and relaxation. Horse lovers must visit the town's famous national equestrian school, the Cadre Noir, where they can have a guided tour and you may be fortunate enough to see a performance of the magnificent horses led by the impressive instructors. Furthermore, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the beautiful Loire Valley on horseback.

Another popular activity is renting a canoe either in the town or a little further out at one of the activity centres and discovering the stunning area from the Loire river. The town is also on the ‘Loire à Vélo’ route for keen cyclists who can experience why this area is called the ‘Garden of France’.

Just out of town you can seek shade in the Zoo de Doué Bio Parc (22km) where 600 animals live in natural surroundings amongst interesting flora and fauna in the old quarry.

How long have you owned the property?
15 years

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The potential of making an open space environment with lots of sunlight and a garden like no other

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
It was the garden of Rambuteau

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...

Really do? Must go hot air ballooning. It was started here. Also go to the Savonnerie. The only one in France that is named "artisanal" by the French Government. Not only is it the best soap in the world, the aroma will knock your socks off
Really eat? You must eat white asparagus in May & June. You must eat the seafood of Olivier at the Sat. Market. He brings oysters-coquille St Jacques & other shell fish that I never knew existed
Really see? see Chateau de Villandry. The most beautiful gardens in France. The house of Leonardo de Vinci.  You will see many of his experiments

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
There is a wine here that won the blind taste with 1990 Petrus. The La Canche stove is the only one made with a double hood.

  • Serene

    on 30/07/2019

Saumur en Blanc was the perfect getaway, completely enclosed behind gates, with private pool and the house has beautiful furnishings and amenities. Serene and relaxing, yet a short walk to Saumur’s best restaurants, Château de Saumur and well positioned for touring the lovely villages and other Château of the Loire. The owner met us on arrival and offered local advice and contacted us prior a few weeks to departure (helping with restaurant reservations), invaluable and meant we dined in some of Saumur’s best restaurants. We highly recommend Saumur en Blanc and would love to return.

  • Amazing time!

    on 01/10/2018

We stayed at Saumur en Blanc for an idyllic week this past June. We were seeking accommodation that had a pool and a chef's kitchen that would allow us a moderate journey each day to visit one of the fabulous Loire Chateaux. When we researched the town of Saumur and found it had lots of recommended restaurants, we bypassed the chef at home option, Big Mistake. When fully explained by the owner, we found that the chef that would have cooked for us, would be the same chef who cooked for us at the fine restaurants in town. The restaurants were really good, so imagine having them cook in house. The homeowner gave us wonderful advice on restaurants and wine tastings, also recommended which and how many of the chateaux to visit...everything exactly as suggested. The kitchen in the villa is beyond anything we've ever had in a rental. It is beautifully equipped with every conceivable appliance and gadget...you needn't bring anything from home. Fabulous pool in a very private oasis - right in the middle of town. A fantastic villa, we highly recommend.

  • Amazing Holiday!

    on 22/09/2018

We stayed in Saumur en Blanc in early August this year with another family. We had a wonderful stay. The house is beautifully appointed, and equipped with everything you could possibly need. The setting, back from the street is very peaceful, and the pool is lovely. The location is very convenient, walking distance to shops, restaurants, etc. Finally, the owner, Deena, was amazing. She contacted us before our stay and made restaurant and babysitting arrangements for us. She met us on arrival with a wonderful platter of snacks and drinks. Throughout our stay she could not have been more helpful. We would certainly recommend Saumur en Blanc to others, and hope to visit again in the future.

  • Amazing property!

    on 25/08/2018

From the moment we arrived at this beautifully appointed house I knew we were in for a very special stay. The memory of entering through the gates into the calm oasis of beautiful garden and the sparking pool is still one that make me sigh with happiness!

Saumur en Blanc is immaculately presented and (much to my husband’s delight) every conceivable culinary whim catered for. It is very rare to find such a well equipped house in our experience. The accommodation is spacious and the beds incredibly comfortable. While it did feel like a home from home, it was more like a dream home from home - such attention to detail and wonderfully serene interior.

Saumur is a super town to visit with much to keep you busy - the Chateau is worth a visit but we also just loved strolling around the medieval streets soaking up the atmosphere, ice cream in hand. We were only in the region for a week but visited Puy de Foy (about 90 minutes drive away) which, for us, is a must if in the area - just fantastic (get there early and aim to stay as late as possible in order to make the most of your day). Closer to ‘home’ the horses of the Cadre Noir were also well worth a visit. We spent time visiting local markets and purchased wonderful local fresh produce to take home - making much use of the super gas barbecue.

While the home and surrounding environment were spot on, we felt that the key to the success of our holiday was our host - Deena. From the moment we arrived we were made very welcome and throughout our stay no question, restaurant recommendation, or idea for what to, do was too much for her. Deena’s recommendations were fantastic - do ensure you write them all down as there are so many super ideas in order to enhance your Saumur experience. Thank you Deena. Your beautiful home and guidance was just what our family needed.”

  • Great holiday with exceptional service!

    on 18/08/2018

Thanks for making our week one to remember! We loved every minute. Will send you some photos!

Thanks again for all the advice and walking around town! And the dinners, the sitter, my wrinkle-free skin .... you are the ultimate host!

  • Amazing time at this property!

    on 31/07/2018

A very pleasing week at Saumur en Blanc – thank you again Oliver’s Travels!

  • Just perfect!

    on 22/12/2017

A very pleasant time spent at Saumur en Blanc! There are so many interesting spaces in this house that even when the house is full you can always find a quiet space to rest read or write. We very much appreciated the walk to the local market which offers such high quality local produce. The enclosed garden and swimming pool are perfect for time-out with the family. We organised drinks parties and barbecues by the pool on many a summer evenings. Just perfect!

  • Like a Five Star Hotel

    on 05/09/2017

I did not think it possible to find a lovely house in Saumur that was like a five-star hotel. I had my own personal chef, driver, and the use of a Mercedes. The food was fantastic and the wine selections were excellent. The staff were unfailingly courteous and helpful, and requests were carried out with ease and efficiency. I never once had to repeat a request. The overall white décor, I felt, created an impression of calm and well-being. All in all, the arrangements I made for a two-week rental were entirely satisfactory, and I hope to repeat the arrangement next summer.
