Chateau Du Marquis De Tracy Reviews

  • Fantastic location for a large family gathering

Posted by James S on 18/08/2016

We had a great week celebrating a family birthday. The owners are so helpful and welcoming and the chateau itself is spacious, well-kept and with a grandeur ( a bit faded, it's true, but this is reflected in the very reasonable price) that we all enjoyed. May well go back!

  • Beautiful Ambience

    Posted by Martin on 26/11/2014

We stayed in Chateau Du Marquis de Tracy for a week. I have organized a photographic workshop with 3 models und 4 photographers. Of course (and fortunately for us), the Castle is not new and you feel the history everywhere, but this was exactly what we where looking for. Every room has his own history and ambience and we found many interesting places to photograph. We felt very welcome by the hosts and got all services and help we needed. The models loved the swimmingpool in the garden. The bedrooms in an oldfashioned stil are very spaceful and comfortable. We enjoyed the evenings, when we were sitting in front of the fireplace and relaxed after a strenous shotting day.

Thank's again to Esmeralda and Victoire de Tracy for their hospitality.

The setting was beautiful, the chateau still has a lot of its original splendour. Plenty of space to host 3 to 4 families with children. Not too far south, so nice location to travel to from Belgium, Netherlands.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
Acquired by the family d’Estutt de Tracy through an alliance with the daughter of the Minister of Finance of the Duc de Bourbon in 1640, the castle has been in the family ever since.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
Our family was born here but what we can say is that there is a warm and friendly atmosphere, it’s a very special place. You feel like you are in a bubble when you are here, the silence, the nature around, it is a very peaceful place.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
Some members of the family particularly distinguished themselves throughout times, such as Antoine (1754-1836) who represented the nobility during the Etats Généraux, before joining theTiers d’Etat.
Commander of cavalry under the Marquis de La Fayette, he was imprisoned in 1793. He was a pupil of Buffon and Lavoisier, and took advantage of this forced rest to develop his philosophical system known as the "ideologists". He then became senator until 1814, and was elected permanent member of the French Academy.
His son Victor Estutt, Marquis de Tracy (1781-1864), served in the army until 1818, and was elected Deputy of Allier and appointed Minister of the FrenchNavy in 1848. He also developed a passion for agronomy and devoted himself to the development of the Sologne area. He was a close friend of Mathieu de Dombasle, and ended up being the first one to make use of his famous plough.
The portraits of Victor de Tracy and his wife Sarah Newton, niece of Isaac Newton, are still displayed in the Castle library.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?

This charming dwelling was for the writer Georges Simenon the inspiration for one of his most famous novels, the so called Affaire Saint-Fiacre. Yann Arthus Bertrand, friend of the family visited the castle many times.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should really do?
The national center for stage costumes in Moulins: Since its opening in 2006, almost 600,000 visitors have been captivated by this magical site displaying opera, dance and theatre costumes. Pieces of a collection that is unique in the world made up of 10 000 costumes or more than 20,000 elements.
The mysterious Mantin house in Moulins: In the XIX century, a rich bourgeois left is house to the city when he died. The obligation was to keep the house closed for a century and to reopen it, in order to show the people how life was then.
The arboretum of Baleine.
Visit the caves of Saint Pourçain and try the local wine.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
There are so many castles to see in our region (around 500), the castle of Saint Aubin is one of them. We know some owners and can advise you in your choice.
