Overview

Ideal for Kids Walk to Beach Walk to Village

Petit Bateau is a superb state of the art apartment in the heart of Biarritz with stunning views of Sainte-Eugénie Church, Port de Pecheurs and the ocean beyond. It offers luxurious contemporary accommodation in a building full of grandeur - the minute you enter its carpeted lobby, the elegant curved staircase ahead of you conjures up the splendour of a former era. This is definitely the place to stay for a classy Biarritz experience.

There is nothing petit about this cleverly designed residence which boasts a vast living and dining area with sumptuous leather sofas, dining table for eight and many carefully chosen paintings and objets d’art. This sense of opulence continues into the master bedroom with its balcony doors, walk- in Italian shower, marble sinks and dressing room. A further two comfortable double rooms share a spacious bathroom with bath and shower. Admire the city and look down towards the ocean from the balcony stretching two sides around the building.

When you are ready to leave your luxurious home, stroll in the direction of the town’s most famous beach, La Grande Plage (350m) to watch the surfers riding the waves. You’ll discover a lovely atmosphere around Port Vieux (300m) where there is the town’s main shopping street, Rue Port Vieux, and a tiny sheltered beach, loved by locals.

Visit the amazing market at Les Halles de Biarritz, where you can buy fresh fish, warm baguettes, fruit and vegetables as well as many wonderful Basque specialities. Have a closer look at Port de Pecheurs before eating at one of its seafood restaurants.

Biarritz is of course a mecca for surfers and Oliver’s Travels guests can arrange surf coaching for all abilities or just equipment hire so you can head to La Plage de la Cote des Basques and ride the waves alongside surfers from across the world.

Other services that can be offered include guided tours, bike rental and scooter hire or you may wish to hire a car or even personal chauffeur so you can get out and explore some of the further wonders of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region, whether idyllic Basque villages near the majestic mountains, wilder beaches along the coast or pretty seaside villages.

You may prefer to just stay in Biarritz, close to your perfect ocean-view apartment, where you can explore, shop, dine, surf, play golf or just relax by one of the many wonderful beaches this part of the Basque coastline has to offer.

Biarritz is on the Bay of Biscay in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region, south-west of France, near the border with Spain. The resort dates back to the mid-19th century when aristocracy built their summer residences along this part of the coast, including the well-known Hotel du Palais, built by the wife of Napoleon III and just a fifteen minutes walk away along the beach.

Petit Bateau is on the first floor of an apartment building (no lift) situated in the heart of the city, only 350m from the town’s most famous beach, La Grande Plage. The restaurants, bars, cafes and shops of Biarritz are also all within a short walk.

You’ll discover a lovely atmosphere around Port Vieux (300m) where there is the town’s main shopping street, Rue Port Vieux and a tiny sheltered beach, loved by locals. Amazing Art Deco buildings around the town and especially along the beach include the nearby Casino (also home to a theatre and swimming pool) and the Aquarium (400m) which is a must for sea-lovers or families.

There are other smaller beaches around the town such as La Plage de la Cote des Basques to the south (1km), which has become a favourite for surfers. Indeed, Biarritz has become a surfing mecca with enthusiasts from all over the world attracted to the 6km of Biarritz coastline and beyond. There are plenty of surfing schools for abilities and all ages. Oliver Travel’s guests can arrange surf coaching or just equipment hire during their stay.

You will find some wonderful restaurants in the Port des Pecheurs (250m), the former fishing port, where fresh seafood can be found. Food lovers, don’t miss the amazing market at the Halles de Biarritz, only a 5-minute walk away, including many wonderful Basque specialities. Some of the local specialities include the local touron (marzipan), locally cured ham as well as mussels, mushrooms and more.

Another one of the town’s highlights is the incredible Rocher of the Vierge peninsular (400m), which can be visited via the Eiffel bridge that connects it to the mainland or the fascinating lighthouse (2km) in the northern part of the town where there are some incredible views.

For a change of scene, head to Bayonne (8km) where you can walk around the narrow streets admiring the beautiful and historic architecture or walk along the river front. Or head to the beaches to the north with wide, sandy stretches, some surrounded by grassland and forests, others backed by cliffs and some with beautiful promenades for walkers and cyclists.

Other coastal areas to visit include the picturesque town of Ciboure (16km) to the south where Matisse once lived and the lively resort of Saint-Jean-de-Luz (15km) with a great sandy beach and plenty of family-friendly activities as well as an abundance of golf courses and lovely walks along the surrounding coastline and hills.

There are also some idyllic Basque villages inland to explore such as two of France’s Plus Beaux Villages; pretty Ainhoa (25km) and Sare (23km), where you can take the old wooden train up to the summit of La Rhune, one of the most dominant peaks of the Pyrénées, where there are some restaurants with incredible views as well as hiking opportunities.

Indeed, this whole region offers an extended range of outdoor activities, such as walking, horse- riding, fishing, cycling, canoeing and many others including water-sports along the coast.
