Overview

Ideal for Kids Walk to Beach All Bedrooms En-Suite

This smart and stylish apartment undoubtedly enjoys the best of both worlds, being within easy walking distance of the golden sands and crashing waves of Côte des Basques and the glitz and glamour of downtown Biarritz. Le Fil Rouge comfortably sleeps four and is located on the first floor of a pretty townhouse with plenty of shops and cafes nearby.

The living area is modern, bright and beautifully furnished in a contemporary style with plenty of artistic touches while providing everything practical that you need for a relaxing stay. This wooden floored retreat lives up to its name with the colour red threading its way throughout via a couple of perfectly chosen statement walls to the quirky stools surrounding the dining table. Both bedrooms are simple yet cosy and have en-suite facilities.

Nearby Côte des Basques, one of Biarritz’s most famous beaches, is the birthplace of France’s surfing scene and is a picturesque bay framed by cliffs with a superb view of the Spanish coast. When the tide is out there is plenty of room for beach games, walking or just watching surfers performing their tricks in the powerful waves. In July, the beach hosts the Biarritz surf festival with its surfing contests and performances of live music.

Climb back up to the ocean facing Boulevard du Prince de Galles and relax at one of the bars or cafes to sip a cocktail or sample the fresh seafood. Then take the shuttle to the city centre or continue along the boulevard as it curls around the beach’s northern peninsular, leading to Port Vieux where there is safe swimming, an aquarium and more fine dining at the historic harbour.

Don’t forget to visit the renowned La Grande Plage and admire the Art Deco style of the Hotel du Palais, so typical of the city. There’s also the amazing market at Les Halles de Biarritz where you can buy fresh fruit, seafood, vegetables, warm bread as well as typical Basque specialities.

Explore further to marvel at the wonders of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region, whether idyllic Basque villages near majestic mountains, wilder beaches along the coast or pretty inland villages.

Le Fil Rouge is situated in a small residential road just south of downtown Biarritz and a short walk from the brilliant surfing beach, Côte des Basques.

The elegant coastal resort of Biarritz is in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region of south-west France, dating back to the mid-19th century when aristocracy built their summer residences alongside the magnificent coastline, following the example of Emperor Napoleon III. His wife, Eugenie, had spent her childhood holidays on the Basque coast and fallen in love with its glorious landscape – the Hotel du Palais on La Grande Plage (2km) is their former residence and remains a symbol of the lure of Biarritz.

Your local beach, Côte des Basques (600m), is the birthplace of France’s surfing scene and is still considered to be the heartland of Europe’s surfing culture as well as a popular spot for beginners - there is a surf school and shop and the beach can be accessed by steps, path or the free shuttle. It’s a picturesque bay with golden sands framed by cliffs and a superb view of the Spanish coast and mountains. When the tide is out there is plenty of room for beach games, walking or just watching surfers performing their tricks in the powerful waves. In July, it hosts the Biarritz surf festival with its surfing contests and performances of live music.

At high tide the beach completely disappears, so climb back up to the Boulevard du Prince de Galles to relax at one of the bars to sip a cocktail and admire the ocean view. Then take the shuttle to the city centre or continue along the boulevard as it curls around the beach’s northern peninsular, leading to Port Vieux (1km) where there is safe swimming, the Art Deco style Aquarium and more fine dining at the historic harbour.

Food aficionados shouldn’t miss the restaurants and market at Les Halles de Biarritz (800m), where you’ll find fine Basque specialities alongside fresh fruit, vegetables and warm baguettes. If you enjoy sea food there are plenty of good restaurants in the interesting Port des Pêcheurs (1km), the city’s former fishing port.

Don’t forget to visit Phare de Biarritz (3km), a tall lighthouse built in 1834. After climbing its 248 steps you’ll be rewarded with magnificent ocean and city views - look northwards towards the wilder surfing beaches of the Anglet coastline which are well worth a visit.

When you are ready to leave your local paradise, there are some idyllic Basque inland villages to explore such as two of France’s Plus Beaux Villages, pretty Ainhoa (27km) and Sare (25km) where you can take the train to the summit of La Rhune, one of the highest peaks of the Pyrénées where there are restaurants with incredible views as well as opportunities for hiking.
