An extravagantly redesigned Church Hall offering a one-of-a-kind accommodation for up to sixteen guests. Holiday in history in the very place where William Wordsworth was educated as a child, this former school hall boasts rustic stone walls, parquet floors and has been lovingly converted to a holiday let with a luxury finish.
The ground floor holds the main sleeping accommodation but follow the grand wood-panelled stairwell up to the epic open plan hall complete with sparkling chandeliers, large break out sofa areas, a bar and a unique eighteen-seater circular dining table. This is a dream spot to spend your evenings, enjoying a cocktail at the bar, sitting down to a lively dinner then winding down with a game of pool. A large widescreen TV and comfy sofa area provide an opportunity for a more sedate movie night in, while the well-equipped kitchen is stocked with everything you will need to cater for a large group from dishwasher, built-in microwave, aga style gas cooker with gas ring hob, coffee machine and blender.
Built into the basement floor of the property is your very own spa area complete with large eight-seater hot tub and sauna room, an ideal place to unwind and relax whilst catching up with friends and listening to relaxing music on the spa sound system. Whilst on sunnier days the outdoor spaced is enclosed for privacy and holds a fire pit, hammock, outdoor dining area and BBQ grill to soak up the rays whilst cooking up an al fresco lunch.
The generous sleeping accommodation will leave you spoilt for choice for where to rest your head at night. On the top floor is a magnificent master suite with emperor sized bedroom, freestanding bath, beamed ceilings and views of the city below, wake-up from a great night’s sleep and enjoy your morning coffee on the suite’s own balcony overlooking the main hall below. A further bedroom off the main hall holds a four-poster bed, feature stone walls, an en-suite WC and access to a lovely bathroom with free-standing bath.
The ground floor holds the rest of the bedrooms with four double bedrooms, a twin bedroom with two double beds and en-suite shower, and a large bedroom, ideal for kids and sleepovers with two double beds and a fantastic double bunk set-up accessed by carpeted stairs decorated with a charming porthole window and maritime theme.
For those looking to celebrate a special event, Wordsworth House promises a memorable holiday home situated in the beautiful Georgian market town of Cockermouth, perched on the edge of the Western Lake District and Solway Coast there is much to explore and enjoy both near to home and in the surrounding area.

What you should know…
- Please take care when driving cars through the driveway as the surrounding railing is a listed heritage asset
- This a Grade 2 listed building, therefore windows cannot be opened, mechanical ventilation is provided instead, but please be respectful of the rules so as to preserve the historic property
- Children should be supervised in the hot tub
- There are no laundry facilities at the property, but a launderette is close by if needed

About the surrounding area of Wordsworth HouseRevel in the history of Wordsworth House by stepping out to explore the country town of Cockermouth and paying a visit to the National Trust’s Wordsworth House and Gardens, the birthplace of the famous poet. Tour the beautifully preserved Georgian townhouse or stroll the riverside garden, packed with vegetables and fruit and leading to a pretty terrace walk.
Get out in nature by taking the short drive to the stunning Bassenthwaithe Lake, over four miles long there are some pretty walks to enjoy. While you are there why not visit the local Lakes Distillery with a visitors’ centre and bistro where you can sample the whisky, gin and vodka made on site, or even book a family tour where children can feed the venues own herd of alpacas. Also, found at the lake is the Mirehouse, a remarkable historic house with its own simple open-air theatre and rose garden.
Those looking for a more ambitious hike could try their hand at the local peaks of Skiddaw and Blencathra offering breath-taking views of the Lakes as you reach the summit, an excellent way to take in the truly spectacular scenery Cumbria has to offer.
For some coastal action a visit to the stunning Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Solway Coast, is a must see. With 7.6m of raised beach there is much to explore from undulating sand dunes, views of the Galloway Hills and a wealth of local wildlife from rare amphibians to a variety of birdlife from pink footed geese to oystercatchers and curlew.
Delve into the Lake District with a visit to Keswick or the busy hub of Bowness on Windermere, just under an hour’s drive away. There are activities to keep everyone busy, including sailing, horse-riding, kayaking and hill walking. Choose from taking in the stunning Lake Windermere, by air or water from a breath-taking Gyroplane experience to a relaxing ride on one of the many steamers available at the pier at Bowness-on-Windermere. Or stay on dry land and hire a local bike and enjoy some of the western shore cycling routes of Windermere and Grizedale Forest which are particularly good for family-friendly routes.

Best Suited For: All AgesWordsworth House has something for everyone, from adults to kids young and old. The entertainment open-plan living area offers a great space to retreat to on a rainy day, with widescreen tv, comfy sofas and pool table where many an hour can be passed. Kids will love splashing in the hot tub in the basement, or just relaxing in the comfortable bedrooms, particularly the large sleepover room with extra special double bunk feature, an enviable spot for kids to make their own.
The local area has much to keep young ones happy. Keen cyclists can hire mountain bikes at Cyclewise Whinlatter and explore three amazing, graded bike trails amidst a beautiful forest setting. For little monkeys a trip to Go Ape Whinlatter will provide an excellent day of climbing and exploring the beautiful woodland scenery.
Little ones can unleash their inner farmer at the charming Ewe Close Farm in Arklebury, where large groups can be booked in to enjoy a range of activities from bottle feeding, goat milking and egg collecting.
If you are venturing into the Lake District, a trip to Keswick is a short drive away. Kids young and old will marvel at the excellent Puzzling Place, a centre that plays with the art of optical illusion with an anti-gravity room, hologram gallery and Eyelusions Exhibition to play mind-bending tricks on all the family.
Delving a little deeper into the Lakes will take you to the famous adventure playground of Brockhole on Lake Windermere set within stunning historic gardens it boasts a wealth of lakeside activities from canoeing to boat-hire. Those wishing to keep off the water can try their hand at Krazy Karts, Archery and even indoor caving. For smaller children the options are endless with woodland Faerie trails, mini-golf and mini tractors, and plenty of cake in the on-site café for a much-needed sugar rush.
