Deburgo Castle in Ireland's county of Mayo is a uniquely romantic holiday, wedding, party and conference destination that provides luxury accommodation, tranquility and privacy in a restored castle with every modern convenience.

Deburgo Castle is situated in the ancient barony of Kilmaine and is surrounded by 16 acres of rich walled pasture land. It is well serviced with airports, and the nearest town of Balinrobe is only 8 km away and offers a good selection of pubs and eateries. The picturesque village of Cong (famous for the John Ford film ”The Quiet Man”) and Ashford castle are also close by.

The area abounds with natural beauty with the mountains and lakes of Connemara less than an hour away, as well as where Lough Mask meets Lough Corrib near Cong (both havens for anglers and history buffs!). The castle makes an idea base for touring the wild and wonderful west of Ireland.

The castle is surrounded by 16 acres of rich, walled pasture land. At the rear of the castle there is a large patio and seating area. The front of the castle has a large meadow garden with a long driveway and allows guests total privacy!

Ground Floor

The ground floor bedroom is a large stone flagged beamed room with deep wall recesses. There is a large ornately-carved antique bed which can also be converted into two singles. Two of the recesses can also be used as additional beds which makes this an ideal family room. The dedicated shower-room is situated next door.

First Floor

On the first floor there are two en-suite rooms: one principal vaulted double room with a delightfully romantic king size rococo bed and a small double/twin room with a double gothic iron bed.

Second Floor

Great Hall: Once the heart of medieval life; the hall has a huge stone fireplace with a vaulted ceiling rising to over 20 feet. There is a beautiful 17th century oak table with ample room for a banquet. The fully equipped kitchen is conveniently situated next door. The hall can accomodate up to 25 seated. (please contact us for details)

Gallery: An intricately designed minstrel’s gallery spans one end of the hall just waiting for the musicians to arrive, or failing that there is a valve amp CD system which takes full advantage of the incredible acoustics!

Guest Toilet: On the same level as the hall.

Kitchen: Fully fitted kitchen with serving hatch to the hall equipped with range cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher etc.

Third Floor

Past the old garderobe there is another small double/twin room with a delightful en-suite shower room.

Fourth Floor

Follow the stairs to the top of the castle and enter the Lord and Lady’s apartment (sitting room). This is a large room gracefully furnished with antiques and hung with tapestries. The trussed roof was modelled on Dunsoghly castle and is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, with every rafter and beam hand-crafted and traditionally treated.

Hidden behind the bookcase is a ladder which leads to a secret chamber where valuables or prisoners would have been held. The views from the battlements are awe inspiring! On a clear day one can see for up to 40 miles across the stone walled fields to the Partry and Maamturk Mountains.

Adjacent to the sitting room is a beamed double room with a large four poster bed lavishly hung with silk embroidered drapes. Set in the window is a free standing bath which offers spectacular views of the stone walled fields and the mountains. The en-suite shower room has a double hand crafted sink unit.

  • Memorable Experience

    Created on 28/09/2018

Staying at the Castle was truly a memorable experience. Brendan and his wife Marnie are thoughtful and kind - they greeted us and gave us a very thorough history of the property. They were available for any and all questions and their responses were always prompt.
We had a large family ranging in age from two to 75 and everyone loved the castle for different reasons. If you're looking for a unique and memorable experience, I cannot recommend it enough.

  • Once Upon A Time

    Created on 03/08/2018

On June 29th 2018, my husband and I had the delightful honor to spend a magical number of days at the Castle in Kilmaine, Co. Mayo. It was a most unique and memorable experience for us.
Having left the little village of Kilmaine,
we soon found ourselves traveling along a picturesque country road until the view of the Castle, a well preserved 14th century old castle, rose up before us in graceful splendor, leading us to the castle entrance. Both my husband and I were giddy with excitement with the reality of spending time at an Irish castle!
Our gracious hosts and castle owners, Marnie and Brendan, warmly greeted us upon arrival. Once inside, Brendan gave us an informative grand tour of all five floor levels of the castle’s long history of the English-Normand House of de Burgh. From room to room, we marveled at the careful attention given to the very tasteful decor, although in keeping with the historical time period. The thick and solid sound proofed limestone walls surround a winding limestone stairway from the first floor to the fifth. The rooms consist of four ensuite bedrooms, a kitchen and a balcony which overlooks a grand banquet hall. This hall is equipped with all sorts of interesting artifacts, including a suit of armor and large fireplace.
Our comfortable ensuite bedroom was on the fifth floor,. It came with an added bonus of a large bath tub and large private sitting room. It also allowed us panoramic views of the surrounding Irish countryside and Croagh Patrick.
History and beauty abounds at the Castle. A truly spectacular place to absorb history and capture the peaceful serenity surrounding it.
Thank you Marnie and Brendan for being exceptional hosts and making our visit so very special.
    Noreen and Ross.

  • Perfect Secluded Getaway

    Created on 22/07/2018

We stayed at the Castle for four nights, and were thrilled with the experience. As other reviewers have mentioned, the opportunity to live in a castle instead of just touring it is priceless. The castle has been lovingly restored and furnished in a historically accurate style, but with modern conveniences (such as a full kitchen and running water!) added. The peace and quiet at this location makes for a relaxing, magical stay. Despite the seclusion, basic shopping needs can be easily fulfilled in nearby Kilmaine. Most other things can be found in Ballinrobe, which is about a 15 minute drive away.

  • Enchanting

    Created on 31/05/2018

Our two day stay at the castle was magical. To dwell in a castle, rather than simply touring one,is quite a different experience. I was concerned that the thrill of being in a castle would wear off after a few hours, but it just became even more enchanting as we were immersed in medieval life.
The castle itself is so wonderfully decorated. It has modern comforts that blend into the medieval setting.
We loved the grounds as well. What a perfect place for photographing! It has a very romantic setting with a nice patio area and mowed trails for walking.
There is a grocery within a few minutes and the town of Cong is a 15-20 minute drive.

  • One for your bucket list!

    Created on 20/04/2018

We stayed as a group of 10 adults and 1 child April 2017 ( was a family weekend away to mark an occassion).
    Cannot recommend this castle enough.
