Meals have plenty of room to spill outdoors at Villa Symes, a three-house estate surrounded by the wild landscapes of Comporta. The main kitchen and dining room open directly onto the terrace, where a large barbecue and generous outdoor table set the scene for lunch after the beach or dinner as the light drops over the surrounding greenery. A 12-metre swimming pool sits close by, along with daybeds, several outdoor seating areas and even an exterior fireplace for cooler evenings. With privileged access to Brejinhos beach around a 30-minute walk away, you can spend the afternoon beside the Atlantic before returning to cook, pour the wine and settle in outside for the evening.

5. Bisenzio Tower, Umbria
Beautifully restored in the Umbrian countryside, Bisenzio Tower has plenty to keep everyone occupied. Work out in the gym, settle in with a book or make the most of the home cinema before heading outside for the evening. The outdoor area is made for relaxed meals, with a pizza oven ready for whoever wants to take charge of dinner and a swimming pool close by for a dip while everything cooks. Add a round of cocktails and the surrounding countryside, and you have all the ingredients for a memorable evening at home.

6. Villa Hislop, Crete
Few dinner views compete with the one at Villa Hislop, where the terrace looks across the Cretan sea towards Spinalonga Island. A pergola shades the outdoor dining and seating areas, while an outdoor kitchen and barbecue mean there’s little reason to move inside once the evening begins. The 13-metre infinity pool stretches out alongside the terrace, and steps from the villa lead directly down to a private beach platform for a swim before dinner. With ten ensuite bedrooms, there’s space for a sizeable group, but it’s the combination of sea air, sunset views and a table overlooking the water that makes this one particularly memorable for alfresco meals.

7. Villa Vista Istan, Marbella
High above Istán Lake, Villa Vista Istan turns dinner into part of the landscape. Sliding doors lead from the kitchen towards the terrace and barbecue area, where an alfresco dining space sits among a series of layered terraces overlooking the lake and surrounding mountains. There’s a traditional pizza oven too, making this an especially good choice for evenings built around cooking together rather than simply carrying dinner outside. Between courses, take a swim in the infinity pool or find one of the hammocks and outdoor lounges positioned around the grounds. As sunset reaches the lake, the changing light and elevated views do much of the decorating for you.

8. Villa Cumbrera, La Zagaleta
The elevated setting does most of the work at Villa Cumbrera, set high in the private hills of La Zagaleta. Its outdoor dining area seats ten, with landscaped gardens, a private orchard and broad terraces extending around the contemporary villa. A heated infinity pool looks towards the Andalusian landscape, while the two-level grounds give you a choice between the upper pool terrace and the greener garden below as the setting changes through the day. Inside, two fully equipped kitchens make catering for a large group straightforward; outside, far-reaching mountain views provide the backdrop once dinner reaches the table. Stay out after dark and the secluded hillside position comes into its own.

9. Villa Yassa, Mallorca
Dinner under the pergola is one of Villa Yassa’s great pleasures, with the Tramuntana mountains rising beyond a garden of citrus trees and Mediterranean planting. The kitchen has alfresco dining spaces on both sides, so meals can move around the house with the sun, while the orange grove provides a particularly Mallorcan backdrop. A long saltwater pool runs through the garden for a swim before dinner, and the kitchen comes with a wine fridge and orange juicer – two small details that feel especially useful here. There’s another shaded dining area near the boules court, looking towards the 12th-century Chapelle Notre-Dame d’Aubune and the Dentelles de Montmirail beyond.
