Pool All Bedrooms En-Suite Ideal for Parties

This lavishly renovated tower-turned-villa in Umbria has luxurious touches at every turn. Guests of all sorts will find their pleasure; fitness lovers will hit the sauna and gym, and the media room will enchant movie buffs. Bookworms will bury themselves in the extensive English library, while the chef of the family will perfect their pizza at the outdoor stone oven. All this, set above rolling hills at the border of Tuscany and Lazio.

This holiday villa is split between 2 buildings, with a courtyard between. The original 13th century tower spreads over 4 floors - to avoid the stairs, choose one of the ground floor bedrooms in the other building. The grounds were designed by the famous Italian landscape artist, Alberto Margheriti. Here, beneath a pergola dripping with leaves, you'll gaze out past the infinity pool to mountains beyond. Imagine breakfast on the stone terrace beside the sunroom - perfezione!

Overlooking the national park of Monte Rufeno, this holiday villa is world apart from city life. Still, it's accessible - just 7 km from the A1 Autostrada connecting Rome and Florence. The nearest town is Fabro (5 km), a precious medieval village above the Tiber.

A gazebo complete with stone built barbeque and pizza oven is the perfect place for a lazy lunch or romantic evening dining.

The large heated infinity pool has the same magnificent views…..perfect for evening dips under the stars and a grandstand view of the fireflies’ firework displays in early summer.

And for the even more energetic, the gardens include a shady boules court.

The whole area is a food lover’s paradise. Umbria is home to the world famous salty Pecorino cheese and crisp dry Orvieto wine. Some of Italy’s finest wine areas are on the doorstep and there are many small family-run vineyards which welcome visitors.

This means easy access to fascinating places including Orvieto, Arrezzo, Assisi, Cetona, Montepulciano, Perugia, Siena and Spoleto as well as the lakes of Bolsena and Trasimeno.

Rome is two hours away on the Autostrada, and served by regular trains from the small town of Fabro, which is just a 10-minute drive from Torre. Highlights include the Vatican City, Roman Forum, Colosseum and Spanish Steps.

Florence is about an hour and a half drive away and is on the train line from Fabro. Highlights include the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vechio, Boboli Garden, Pitti Palace.

Siena is an hour and twenty minutes drive away, and again reachable by train from Fabro. Visit the beautiful Campo square where twice a year (2nd July, 16th August) the world famous Palio takes place – a horse race dating back to the 1600s.

Umbria has best of Italy to offer: rolling landscapes, wine, beautiful towns and villages, olive oil, expansive lakes and the food, glorious food. A holiday here can be as lazy, active, cultured and as delicious as you like.

This region is scattered with pretty, picturesque villages, while the area has a rich cultural heritage. From thermal pools to medieval cathedrals and olive oil museum, Umbria has an intriguing amount of history to discover.

Both Rome and Florence are accessible within a day trip, while the closest towns of interest would be Orvieto, the old town which is a fascinating series of winding streets, piazzas and a colourful weekly market.

History lovers will be spoilt - from the first century Roman amphitheatres to the twelfth-century duomos, to the fourteenth-century hilltop fortresses,  the glut of remnants from the medieval and Bronze Age that punctuate the region is impressive.

Housekeeper Cynthia is a great cook!

Cynthia came to Italy from Manila in her native Philippines 20 years ago.  She met her husband Lamberto (who looks after the gardens at Torre) and settled in the nearby hill village of Allerona.

Cynthia will make lunch for guests using fresh ingredients from the gardens and the locality. One of her specialities is Parmigiana, a dish of shallow fried aubergine layered with cheese and tomato sauce and baked in the oven.  Another is ribeye steak simply cooked on the barbecue and served Italian style with a squeeze of lemon juice and salad.
