Who needs the boring, blank walls and faceless anonymity of a ho-hum hotel when you go on your next holiday? It’s all well and good to stay somewhere that’s got functionality down pat, but here at Oliver’s Travels we like to do something a little different. Wherever you’re going, why shouldn’t returning to your accommodation be as exciting and beautiful as the cities and countryside that wowed you during the day?

And let’s face it, everyone loves castles. Be it the girls who want to indulge their inner princess or the chaps who like to strut about like they own the place (and imagine themselves donning a full suit of armour and wielding a broadsword) castles have a tangible magic about them that will captivate and delight anyone of any age.

Staying in one is an experience unlike any other, and so to help you choose the perfect location for your fairytale getaway we’ve scoured our list of properties to find 10 castles that are an adventure for kids and a truly memorable break for anyone who’s got a bit of imagination and romance in their heart.

I’m looking for a castle, chateau or similar to rent for one week in May or Sep next year. We are in Italy this year so next year for this hire we are looking to be somewhere different in Europe. 12 guests, USD10-20k. A key requirement is activities nearby, restaurants, vineyards, sites etc.. Burgundy has been mentioned. We would also like to have catering at least for breakfasts and some lunches and housekeeping if possible. Anyway would love to get your feedback as I’ve never done this before.
