The 7 Best Beaches Near Lisbon

Lisbon has become one of Europe’s most exciting city breaks, loved for its effortless beauty, rich culture, excellent food, and hilltop miradouros. Yet beyond the azulejo-tiled façades, pastéis de nata, and rattling yellow trams lies another side to the Portuguese capital: the beaches stretching along its surrounding coast.

Some of the best beaches near Lisbon, Portugal, are within easy reach of the city. There are sheltered coves and calm swimming spots, as well as wild Atlantic shores made for surfing. Here are seven of our favourites.

Best Beaches Near Lisbon

Best for Water Sports: Praia do Guincho, Cascais

Praia do Guincho beach near Lisbon

We begin with a stunner. Just north of Cascais, Praia do Guincho is a broad sweep of golden sand where northwesterly winds send Atlantic waves rolling towards the shore.

It is one of the best beaches near Lisbon for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing, and regularly hosts national and international competitions. Equipment can be hired nearby, while Bar do Guincho is a relaxed place for a drink as the sun sinks towards the sea. Regular buses cover the six-kilometre journey from Cascais.

Best for Natural Beauty: Praia dos Galapos, Parque Natural da Arrábida

Praia dos Galapos in Arrábida Natural Park

South of Lisbon, the forested slopes of Arrábida Natural Park descend towards a coastline of pale sand, rocky coves, and clear water.

Praia dos Galapos is one of its loveliest beaches, with a sheltered bay that is particularly inviting for swimming and snorkelling. It tends to be quieter than neighbouring Praia dos Galapinhos, although both become popular during the summer.

Reaching the Arrábida coast by public transport requires a little planning, while parking can be limited during the busiest months.

Best for Food: Praia da Adraga, Sintra

Praia da Adraga on the Sintra coast

North of Lisbon, Sintra’s forested hills and extravagant palaces eventually give way to a dramatic Atlantic coastline of cliffs and sandy coves.

Praia da Adraga is one of its most beautiful beaches, with fewer facilities and less development than nearby Praia das Maçãs. Its only restaurant, Restaurante da Adraga, is reason enough to visit, serving fresh fish and seafood with views across the ocean. Order the clams in white wine, then stay until sunset, when the sand takes on a burnished glow.

Nearby Azenhas do Mar is another excellent stop for seafood, its whitewashed houses gathered above the cliffs.

Best for Seclusion: Praia da Ursa, Sintra

Praia da Ursa near Cabo da Roca

Around a half-hour’s scenic walk from Cabo da Roca, Praia da Ursa may be challenging to reach – but it’s worth it. This isolated little beauty is accessible only by a steep descent along a scree-covered slope, keeping it quieter than many other beaches near Lisbon. Around 50 metres wide, the slender cove is one of our favourite beaches near Lisbon for sunset, when dramatic shadows fall across the weathered sea stacks. We recommend bringing a picnic and relaxing on the sand. Swimming is best avoided when conditions are rough, as the Atlantic waves can be strong.

Best for Sports: Praia de Carcavelos, Cascais

Praia de Carcavelos near Lisbon

This Lisbon beach is the longest stretch of sand on the Estoril coast, watched over by the imposing São Julião da Barra Fort. Praia de Carcavelos is a buzzy spot with plenty of activities for sporty types. In the summer, there are regular beach volleyball and football competitions kicking off on the shore. In the winter, the strong southerly swell sees the water given over to bodyboarding and surfing. It’s one of the busier Lisbon beaches, however, as it’s within easy reach of the city. When the sea is calm, it is also one of the most convenient beaches near Lisbon for swimming.

Best for Adventure: Praia do Baleal, Peniche

Praia do Baleal near Peniche

The Peniche peninsula is another good surfing destination, but there are plenty more adventures beyond the swell. An hour’s drive north of Lisbon, Praia do Baleal is a crescent of honeyed sand, dotted with rocks that create secluded nooks and bathing lagoons. Further north, limestone cliffs dip into ravines and sea caverns – great for rock climbing and bouldering. Seafood restaurants and beach bars line the coast, serving fresh fish caught in Peniche that day

Best Family-Friendly Beach Near Lisbon: Praia da Figueirinha, Setúbal

Praia da Figueirinha near Setúbal

Backed by emerald-green hills, Praia da Figueirinha is an arc of icing-sugar sand, dotted with parasols and sun loungers. Its sheltered position and long shallows make it one of the best beaches near Lisbon for swimming and a particularly good choice for families. Children can splash around close to the shore, while the crystalline water is so clear you can see fish darting beneath you. There’s a beach café for refreshments and a lifeguard on duty in summer too.

What Are the Best Beaches Near Lisbon for Swimming?

Praia da Figueirinha is one of the best beaches near Lisbon for swimming, thanks to its sheltered position, clear water, and long shallows. Praia dos Galapos is another good choice for calmer water and snorkelling. Closer to the city, Praia de Carcavelos is convenient and easy to reach, although Atlantic conditions can change and local safety advice should always be followed.
