Overview

Exclusive Recommended Great Value
Heritage Collection
Ideal for Kids Walk to Village Romantic

The Grange offers a retreat for those in search of a unique countryside escape with a difference. The wonderful location offers the perfect opportunity to explore the delights of the Somerset levels. Bird lovers may be lucky enough to spot buzzards, cranes and herons. A visit to Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Abbey and the five National Nature reserves are a must! But you don’t have to go out and about if you simply need oodles of space for energetic children (and grownups) to run around in, just make the most of the huge gardens you will have all to yourselves.

For those who prefer indoor comforts, the Grade II listed home boasts a classic and tasteful interior. Filled with wonderful original features Gothic arch doorways, exposed beams, flagstone floors, a vaulted galleried landing and open fireplaces all add to the unique atmosphere. This hidden jewel within Somerset is believed to date back to the 13th century, having undergone various renovations over subsequent years. The current owners have very sympathetically updated The Grange to create a characterful home-from-home.

The ground floor has a welcoming large comfortable living room with open fireplace, extremely well-equipped country style kitchen with sparkling disco ball, breakfast area and superb dining room, all with original flagstone floors. Four bedrooms are located on the first floor, including the Master bedroom with garden views and en suite bathroom. There are three further large bedrooms (two with king/double beds plus a single in each, and one with zip link super king bed that can also be made up as a twin room). The rooms share access to a country style family bathroom on the first floor. The roll top bath is perfect for a soak after a day of exploring Somerset and there is an additional shower room available on the ground floor.

There is no better way to end the day than an al fresco barbecue in the wonderful enclosed gardens where you can soak up the last of the day’s sun, try your hand at a game of croquet on the well-tended lawn or simply enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this exquisite Somerset retreat.

What you should know…

  • Whilst appearing detached, it is actually part of a large former Grange. The house is completely separate within its own walled garden, as well as having exclusive use of more than half an acre of further fully enclosed garden through the gates
  • The Grange is a charming home, perfect for family gatherings and get-togethers. However, being located on a quiet country lane on the edge of a small and very peaceful village, it is not suitable for parties or large gatherings which exceed the house capacity

This home is a part of our Great Value and Heritage Collection!

This is a historic home, and as such:

  • It has probably been standing for over 100 years, which means it's full of historic value and charm but it may also have one or two quirks!
  • Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

Owner Profile

Property owners
Rob & Sally

How long have you owned the property?
Since 1996

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The Gothic arched doorways and stone flag floors, and all with a welcoming, homely feel

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
There is a local legend that centuries ago it was a stopping off place for pilgrims on their way to Glastonbury Abbey!

Do you have a favourite room in the property?
Difficult to choose, but probably the dining room – dinner by the open fire makes special occasions even more special

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do? Take advantage of the many local footpaths and lanes from the front door, to explore on foot or by bicycle (bikes can be hired locally) or enjoy a day of outlet shopping at Clarks Village

Really eat? Dinner or lunch at some of the outstanding restaurants in the area – ‘Kitchen Danilo’ in Bridgwater, The Swan at Wedmore and Augustus in Taunton being current favourites of ours

Really see? Natural wonders such as starling murmurations, buzzards, herons and even cranes on the Somerset Levels, or Wookey Hole and the Cheddar Gorge and caves...

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
One of the loveliest things about the place (and often commented on by visitors) is how peaceful it is in our wonderful corner of Somerset

The Grange was an excellent property in every aspect. A beautiful house and perfect location. A fabulous welcome with so many lovely extras left by the owners, who were incredibly helpful and accommodating. There was nothing we could think of that wasn’t provided or covered at The Grange. Every need was anticipated. It is by far the best holiday rental I’ve ever stayed in and I would recommend it without reservation.

Very characterful house with wonderful garden in the Somerset levels. A lot of love, thought and attention has clearly gone into both the interiors and the garden, and the whole setup really "works" to an extent that few properties are able to match. The perfect countryside escape!

We had the best stay at The Grange! We were lucky with the weather too and played loads of games with the kids in the garden. My favourite feature has to be those amazing doors and all the original features kept by the owners when they renovated the place. It is full of charm and makes you feel right at home as soon as you step in. We will be back next year. Cannot wait to be next to the fire place and spend some quality time with the family in this amazing house! It’s really a home away from home.
