The magnificent Kirkliston Castle enjoys a fabulous position, just outside of Edinburgh. The Castle sits in 32 acres of stunning manicured parkland. It offers contemporary heritage, exquisite interior design, a fantastic art collection, sleeping spaces to die for and sensational entertainment spaces, all in lavish abundance. You will feel the tingle of history as you walk around this grand and inviting abode, the perfect place to bring the generations together, for a corporate event or for a spectacular celebration with your favourite friends. It is an exclusive use venue for many private celebrations, weddings and other events and has been voted as one of the top three venues in Europe at The International Hotel Awards and one of the Eight Best Wedding Venues Around The World by Grazia Magazine.

Kirkliston Castle was built in 1852 for Thomas Hutchison, an Edinburgh wine merchant and Provost of Leith and designed by David Rhind, a celebrated Scottish architect. Thomas Hutchison and his descendents lived at the Castle for the next one hundred and thirty years.
Thomas’s granddaughter Isobel Wylie Hutchison was a successful Arctic explorer and botanist. Defying convention, she travelled alone on expeditions that few would attempt, even today, collecting plants for the Royal Botanic Gardens and Kew. She was an accomplished artist, poet and travel writer, regularly submitting to newspapers and journals including the National Geographic. After World War 2, Isobel’s writing helped finance repairs to the castle which had been badly damaged acting as a wartime RAF base. Isobel’s legacy can be seen across the whole Estate. She planted many plants in the grounds, including rare species that she brought back from her travels. Between expeditions and in later life Isobel worked tirelessly in the Victorian glasshouses and carefully preserved the layout of the formal gardens which still exist today. Following Isobel’s death in 1982, Wilson and Katie Marshall acquired the castle and later sold it to their son Andrew. This marked the beginning of this new chapter.

The Castle’s events including weddings with up to two hundred and seventy five dining or four hundred and fifty or an evening reception. There are fabulous rooms including the serene Orangery and a bespoke marquee with a marble-topped bar and crystal chandeliers. There is a sensational marble room, a piano room and a bar. Every room is opulent, seriously grand and sprinkled with lavish furnishings and incredible art from over twenty five countries. This is an oasis of gracious and glorious living which will leave you with incredible memories.

There are nine bespoke bedrooms in the castle, each individually designed and decorated with original works by some of the world’s leading contemporary artists. The cloud-like, handmade beds offer the sleep of kings, the cabinetry comes from Atelier 1852 and the ensuite bathrooms come with handmade roll top baths, marble tiles, underfloor heating and walk-in showers. The duvets and pillows are filled with Hungarian goose down. Every room enjoys breathtaking views across the 32 acres of castle grounds.

In addition to the main castle, there are five additional rooms at Kirkliston Gate Lodge and also seven extra, newly renovated rooms at The Stables. If you are interested in this extra accommodation, please enquire. The Castle’s Private Suite is named The Isobel and offers two double guest rooms and two bathrooms as well as magnificent living space. It enjoys astonishingly beautiful views of the walled garden.

Guests of Kirkliston Castle enjoy thirty-two acres of manicured parkland to explore and relax in. Those who enjoy a dose of healthy competition will love the on-site tennis court, excellent fun for guests of all ages! The outdoor dining area is fantastic for those who want to dine while soaking in the glorious garden views or simply enjoy a drink alfresco while the Castle’s very own chefs arrange a delicious feast.

Luxury self-catering holiday accommodation in Edinburgh

Edinburgh, a stunning, mesmerising city surrounding by rugged hills and a serene coastline, is a breathing scrapbook of Scottish heritage, weaving together cobblestone streets, medieval charm, ancient monuments, fine dining experiences and a modern buzz that will make your kilt sway.

Edinburgh Castle, perched dramatically on the top of Castle Rock, is the crown jewel of the city. Inside, you will find the Crown Jewels of Scotland and the Stone of Destiny, giving history buffs heart palpitations. The Royal Mile, a historic street stretching from the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, is sprinkled with traditional shops, lively pubs, street performers, bagpipes and the magnificent St Giles' Cathedral. The cathedral’s Gothic architecture is so stunning it will make your Instagram followers jealous. At the end of the Royal Mile, the Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.

The city boasts a good selection of museums including a Writers' Museum, a literary haven in Lady Stair's Close. Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and Robert Louis Stevenson would probably high-five you if they could. The National Museum of Scotland is like a treasure chest, from prehistoric bling to modern marvels. Art lovers should not miss the Scottish National Gallery, featuring works by the big shots, Titian, Rembrandt and Turner.

Edinburgh's festivals are the stuff of legends. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August is the Godzilla of arts festivals with thousands of performances, artists and spectators from every corner of the globe. The city becomes a canvas for creativity and you will find yourself applauding everything from bagpipe solos and comedy to avant-garde puppetry. Also in August, the Edinburgh International Book Festival turns the city into a literary playground, with authors from every nook and cranny sharing their literary gems. New Year is Edinburgh is simply wondrous with lights, parties, fireworks and laughter spectacularly adding to the exciting ambience.

Holyrood Park offers a green wonderland surrounding Arthur's Seat. Hiking up is like embarking on a quest. It is challenging but the views from the summit are simply breathtaking. It is a perfect spot for a picnic or just gazing at the city, the coastline and those distant hills.

Edinburgh's dining scene is a gastronomic adventure, blending traditional Scottish fare with Michelin star eateries and cosy cafes. From charming pubs serving hearty haggis to elegant restaurants dishing out contemporary cuisine, the city caters to every palate. You will explore diverse culinary landscapes, featuring fresh seafood, locally sourced produce and a vibrant array of whisky bars. Cheers to Edinburgh's culinary delight!

If all this is not enough to make your heart do the Highland Fling, staying in one of Oliver’s Travels’ dreamy, luxurious apartments or houses scattered across the city will add to the magic. Edinburgh is a city that dances between history and modern vibes. With its iconic landmarks, cultural fiestas, lush parks and panoramic charm, it is a fabulous destination that you will want to return to.

Great experience. Location, staff, food - all fantastic. We were very well catered for. Would thoroughly recommend for any family event.

  • A fairytale!

    on 30/04/2022

Attended our friends wedding in this gorgeous venue. An absolute dream fairytale place. Staff all lovely and nothing was a bother.

  • Simply stunning !

    Created on 25/07/2018

We recently attended a wedding at this stunning venue and it truly is a hidden Gem , from the well maintained gardens to the spotless interior , the day was perfect from start to finish ! Even if you weren't a fan of the decor ( I'm old school & like a castle to look like a traditional castle ) you will be blown away by the attention to detail and cannot help but appreciate the work that has gone into making this place unique !! I would recommend the Castle to anyone as everything from the food , service and location are perfect ! I'm kicking myself for not knowing about this hidden Gem until recently

  • Luxurious wedding venue

    Created on 23/07/2018

We attended the wedding reception of a relative here. The grounds are spectacular and the castle is beautiful and tastefully decorated with modern art. The food was wonderful. We saw a couple of the suites which were amazing, but did not stay ourselves. The wedding we attended had about 80 guests and the orangerie already felt pretty full for dining. It would be very tight over 100. Every now and again it was all too obvious that the castle is close to the end of Edinburgh Airport runway.

  • AMAZING VENUE

    Created on 16/07/2018

I cannot say enough about this magical place. We were invited to a wedding and the whole place was unbelievable. The setting, the staff, the food, we only stayed one night I wish it could have been longer. We were well looked after, nothing was too much trouble and all the staff were very professional. What can I say about our room. It was on the ground floor at the back with a lovely view of the gardens. It was gorgeous , the bathroom was black and white and the carpet in the bedroom was so thick I just wanted to stand on it all the time. No expense has been spared and it shows. Thank you very much for a lovely stay.

  • A breathtaking unique private events venue

    on 13/07/2018

Arguably the best in the world in one of the world’s most beautiful cities

  • Exceptional Location; Exceptional Service; Exceptional Experience

    Created on 10/07/2018

We cannot speak too highly of our experience at the Castle. The venue, staff, catering, and attention to detail throughout our daughter's wedding were exceptional. The rooms are luxurious and the grounds meticulously maintained. The staff, particularly Ailsa Gorrie, could not have done enough to make this such a special day. We would wholeheartedly recommend the castle as a wedding venue.

  • Absolutely Outstanding

    Created on 28/05/2018

What a venue, absolutely stunning. The location, the castle, the food, the grounds all amazing.

  • One of Scotland’s finest venues

    on 13/04/2018

  • This place is insane

    Created on 27/03/2018

The castle, staff, drinks and food are absolutely amazing. Jen the person who looked after us on our stay top notch! We had our wedding here and it met all our expectations including the guests. Went above and beyond and we are fussy !!
