For romantic breaks or first holidays with a little one, Sandy Bay Cottage will make your holiday dreams come true. It is a gem of a little stone cottage that sits on a wonderful resort in north Devon with incredible facilities and a sixteen-acre estate. The cottage offers a gorgeous open plan living space and one bedroom with a small cot room and a bathroom. Throughout, it is beautifully decorated in stylish Nina Campbell wallpapers and comes with gorgeous furniture including a lavish king-size bed.

The resort amenities include an excellent heated swimming pool, all the more special for being only a few minutes’ walk from your doorstep. The pool is surrounded by smart cradle rope weave seats and day beds and offers changing rooms, toilets, and showers. The resort games room boasts table football, table tennis and a soft play area for little ones. The resort sits in its own pretty valley with sixteen acres of grounds sprinkled with lush lawns, gardens, sunken nature trails, ponds, meadows, an orchard, streams, an extensive kitchen garden and a greenhouse where you can pick yourselves something fresh and tasty to go with your alfresco dinner. If you bring your furry friend, you can enjoy five acres of dog walking field for off lead enjoyment or a favourite local dog walk to the charming dog friendly pub, the Hunters at Heddons Valley. There are over fifty animals on the estate and children enjoy helping out at feeding times. Beautiful peacocks wander around the grounds, the free-range chickens supply eggs and cute ducks live on three ponds. There is a small herd of alpacas, four pygmy goats, sheep, super cute piglets, guinea pigs and orphan lambs in the spring for children to bottle feed. There is also an outdoor playground with an amazing wooden pirate ship with decks, a tunnel, ship’s wheel, plank, and sand pit, a two storey wendy house with a built-in kitchen, furniture and a veranda and a wooden tractor, slide, trampoline, swings, slides and a climbing frame. Throughout the estate there are some wonderful views with lovely lounge furniture so that you can relax, captivated by the views with a sneaky bottle of chilled wine. The Lookout is one of these, also a perfect spot for early morning meditation or yoga. The huge one and half meter fire pit with benches is wonderful for sing songs and making marshmallow memories. The honesty shop stocks some wonderful goodies including delicious frozen Cook meals, barbecue packs from the local farm shop, tasty ice creams and marshmallows for toasting. Yoga classes take place all year long plus there are fun aqua aerobics sessions in the pool.

Though Sandy Bay Cottage does not have a private garden, there is bistro furniture in the courtyard that is for the exclusive use of Sandy Bay Cottage guests. There are two other little cottages in the courtyard so if you want to share your holiday with friends or other family, you could book Holdstone Cottage or Newt Cottage for them. We also feature the other cottages on the resort, Old Combe Barn, Broadsands Farmhouse, Combe Martin House, and Wild Pear House.

This exclusive resort is nestled in a lush valley near the charming seaside town of Combe Martin. It is the perfect place for a spot of switch off. Combe Martin enjoys blissful secluded sandy beaches, wonderful rock pools, dramatic coastal scenery, a picturesque harbour, quaint shops, cosy seaside pubs, water sports, the fabulous Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, an interesting museum and easy access to the stunning Exmoor National Park, North Devon’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the famous Southwest Coast Path. Nearby, you can explore the sensational Hangman Cliffs, the amazing beaches of Broadsands, Wild Pear, Tunnels and Barricane, Lee Bay, the Woolacombe beaches, Putsborough Sands, Croyde and the magnificent Saunton Sands. There are fabulous attractions such as National Trust houses, the wonderful Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway and amazing activities including horse riding and coasteering. You will never tire of exciting, interesting and thrilling excursions in this wonderful area.

Sandy Bay Cottage enjoys a very warm, homely ambience. Sitting on smart slate flooring, the living room offers a sumptuous modern sofa and armchair, a Smart television for movies at the end of a busy day, a well-stocked bookshelf in case you forget to bring a holiday book, a wooden dining table and a modern, well-equipped kitchen. Laundry appliances are available for all three cottages in the courtyard in a separate laundry room.

The staircase leads up to the beautifully designed bedroom with its gorgeous designer wallpaper and lavish king-size bed, adorned in luxury linens. The cot room with a wooden cot sits just off the bedroom and a separate wet room styled bathroom with marble tiles and a marble sink is next door. This is a wonderful cottage for two or perhaps three with a little one. You will relish in its beauty and be itching to explore the resort’s sixteen acres and its brilliant facilities.

Sandy Bay Cottage is nestled on an exclusive resort with stunning grounds and views near Combe Martin in north Devon. Combe Martin is a fabulous seaside resort with stunning sandy coves, some of the UK’s best rock pools and a fantastic selection of cafes, unique shops, pubs, and restaurants. Combe Martin hosts many events celebrating its heritage and quirks including its annual Hunting of the Earl of Rone ceremony, a Pagan festival. The wonderful Southwest Coast Path runs through the village offering astonishing views and access to beaches and beauty spots that you may not otherwise see. You can hike to Great Hangman, the tallest sea cliff in Britain or take the two hundred and thirty steps down the Golden Cove. You can enjoy the calm waters of the bay on a boat, kayak, or stand-up paddle board.

There are spectacular beaches and coves nearby. Wild Pear Beach and Broadsands Beach are two of the most beautiful, secret coves. Wild Pear is reached via a dramatic descent from the coast path and is an idyllic, protected cove. Broadsands Beach was recently voted the ‘Happiest View in the UK’ with its special curved bay, turquoise sea, rock caves and trees. A network of tunnels hand-carved in the early nineteenth century lead to the wonderful Tunnels Beaches with their Victorian tidal swimming pool and sand and shingle private beaches. Barricane Beach boasts exotic shells, a delightful café, and glorious sunsets. Lee Bay is a fabulously secluded spot looking out to the Bristol Channel. It is often called ‘Fuchsia Valley’ due to its bright red flowers. Woolacombe Beach is a three-mile-long sandy wonder that has been voted the ‘Best Beach in Britain’ and it is only twenty minutes from the resort. Putsborough Sands are on the south side of Woolacombe offering glorious surf and views of the headland. Just around the Baggy Point headland is the very pretty village of Croyde with its famous surfing beach. Backing the fabulous Saunton Sands is the impressive Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

The pretty, historic fishing village of Clovelly is worth the short drive. It was once owned by the Queen of England and clings to the four-hundred-foot cliff where there is no traffic. Steep cobbled streets tumble down to its ancient fishing harbour and 14th century quay.

Twelve miles away, the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway opened in 1890 and is an excellent way to enjoy the wonderful coastal views between the two villages. Another popular trip is to Lundy Island which lies ten nautical miles off the coast. The ferry leaves from Ilfracombe Harbour taking you to this delightful island with its wildlife, big skies and gorgeous scenery.

The National Trust’s Arlington Court and Carriage Museum is a great day out with formal Victorian gardens, ponds, deer, plenty of space for picnics and an impressive collection of horse-drawn vehicles. It is a gem on the edge of Exmoor that has been in the Chichester family for over five hundred years. The gardens enjoy herbaceous borders, a fountain, walled kitchen garden and a conservatory brimming with exotic plants from around the world. There are pleasure grounds with gorgeous views, a wilderness pond, and a deer park wood. The old kitchen tearoom is lovely and offers tasty treats. There is also an excellent second-hand bookshop. Watersmeet is a dramatic river gorge and ancient woodland with a National Trust tearoom set in stunning surroundings. You can treat yourselves to delicious Devon cream teas and be captivated by the amazing landscapes and woodland trails.

You can learn many water sports in the area. Coasteering is also a thrilling sport with many experienced Coasteering and Adventure Sports companies operating at Watermouth Harbour, the next bay along from Combe Martin. Brave participants enjoy climbing over dramatic rocks, jumping into the sea, swimming through gullies, and exploring caves. Horse riding on Exmoor is also popular with the Dean Riding Stables.

Reviews

  • A perfect holiday for three generations

    on 28/08/2023

We stayed in Sandy Bay Cottage while our children and grandchildren stayed in Wild Pear House. Sandy Bay Cottage was comfortable, well-equipped and clean. The additional touches such as tea, coffee and milk plus fresh eggs from the Coulscott hens made it more special. The grandchildren loved the pool, the play area and the animals.

  • Toddler friendly break in Sandy Bay Cottage

    on 13/07/2023

We stayed in Sandy Bay Cottage for a week in late June with our 22 month old daughter and had an amazing week! Our little girl was in her element feeding the animals every morning followed by a trip to the playground, she has been talking about the chickens ever since. The cottage lovely and cosy, and had everything we needed for our week away. The cot room is also really handy. We were quite lucky with the weather and enjoyed some good today trips out to Saunton Sands, Croyde, Lynton and Lynmouth and also did the short Hunters Valley walk. With a toddler, we also opted for takeaway style teas - I’d highly recommend Barricane Beach cafe Sri Lankan curry (it’s so delicious!), Cluck street food in Croyde, the Mexican street food van at the pub in Combe Martin on a Saturday evening, the Black & White chippy in Combe Martin on the beach. Storm in a Teacup boat cafe in Watermouth Bay is also really worth a drop off - a great setting and really good food too!

  • Wonderful

    on 13/02/2023

Wonderful place to stay. Beautiful estate, friendly animals and a great pool. Lovely host too. It is set up so well for families, we hope to be back.

  • A cosy cottage for two

    on 15/08/2022

Well appointed and very comfortable. I loved the artwork (available for purchase via the artist’s website). We found renting this cottage an ideal way to share a holiday with our children/grandchildren staying in the Wild Pear House next door! Our third holiday here and never disappoints!

  • A fantastic week!

    on 05/07/2022

Thank you for a brilliant holiday! Cannot stress enough how family friendly and dog friendly the cottage was, we couldn’t have asked for anything more! Our daughter loved the playground, soft play, swimming pool and of course the animal, our dog enjoyed her biscuits on arrival, that she was allowed on the sofa with the provided waterproof cover on (so many places don’t seem to offer this!) and a good run in the dog walking field! It was such a nice touch to get a few bits and bobs from the kitchen garden too. Alice was just lovely and easy to contact if we needed anything.
The cottages were perfectly located and all the dog friendly recommendations were spot on - we enjoyed a trip to Woolacombe beach, Exmoor and a few yummy lunches at the Pyne arms and hunters inn!
We can’t wait to come back another time!

  • A very pleasant holiday

    on 30/05/2022

We really enjoyed the cottage and location and would happily return. The only problem was the toilet window which was hard to open and close as it was a bit warped.

  • Enjoyable Stay

    on 09/05/2022

We had a lovely stay in the most beautiful setting with carefully planned areas for guests to enjoy the outdoors. Excellent for children with the animals play areas and the great indoor pool. Staff and owner exceptionally pleasant and helpful and would recommend the meals with honesty box. Places we enjoyed Lynton Lynmouth Woolacombe Appledore and Croyde. Thank you for an enjoyable stay in the comfortable cottage and the welcome

  • An Amazing place for a family holiday

    on 10/04/2022

We booked a last minute stay in March for a short break. We had a 2.5 year old child who loves animals and the outdoors and the place seemed to fit the bill and we were extremely pleased with the choice. Our child loved walking around the animal enclosures and being followed by the chickens and ducks. The feeding of the animals & collecting the eggs each morning was brilliant and the staff made this memorable for her everyday. The rest of the facilities were very good two. Our child had not done much swimming before so it was perfect to take her into a small quiet pool everyday where she could start to build confidence in the water and use the pools balls and floats etc. to play with. The indoor and outdoor play areas had plenty to keep her entertained. The actual cottage itself was great and met all the needs you would want in a self catering facility and the small honesty shop would be useful in case you needed anything. Evening meals outside watching the sunset were great. The Farm is situated in a great area. As a family that likes the outdoors there was plenty of walks and beaches to keep you busy and the staff can point you in the right direction! The staff were very friendly and helped us have an awesome holiday. We would recommend this residential complex for anyone looking for a family holiday with animals and that loves the outdoors or a larger group gathering with children.

  • A lovely Stay

    on 13/02/2022

I had a lovely stay. It's in an ideal location for some beautiful walks for me and my dog. We were well informed of places to walk and eat and had some great meals in those pubs advised and made to feel very welcome by Alice on arrival, l am already thinking about coming back in the autumn.

  • Wonderful break with the dogs

    on 22/10/2021

We had a fantastic week in Sandy Bay Cottage- superbly located for lots of wonderful walks and beaches. There was everything we needed in the cottage and the lovely little touches made us feel welcome and set it in a class above other places we have stayed at. We can't recommend it enough- thank you.

  • A magical time

    on 18/10/2021

The farm, its environment, facilitates and hospitality was everything we could have wished for. As a young family with a one-year old daughter, her face lit up every morning at the sight and sounds of the farm animals, with feeding time becoming our must-do daily occurrence with the owners: Alice or her husband. At the end of the day, we'd enjoy entertaining our girl at the indoor play area which was so fun for her crawling or bouncing on the soft flooring created. Throughout the day, the location of the farm was perfect for experiencing beaches and forests; and the Zoo was a winner! As for the cottage itself: Sandy Bat Cottage was small yet perfect: everything we needed was provided - the cot bed/bedroom, changing mat, high-chair etc. Because of our girls sleep times, we stayed in every night: cooked and relaxed after eventful days with lots of fresh countryside air .

  • A lovely cottage in Exmoor

    on 11/09/2021

The amenities on site are great here - the morning animal feed, the swimming pool and the selection of outdoor play. It made entertaining our little one on holiday easy. A couple of things broke in our cottage during our stay, but they were fixed or replaced immediately which was great service. Also thanks to Roy, who was very friendly and gave helpful advice. We had a lovely stay.

  • Lovely stay in a great location

    on 04/09/2021

We stayed in Sandy Bay Cottage for a week at the end of August. The cottage is cosy and the amenities are fantastic. Our toddler loved the play parks, soft play and the pool and we all really enjoyed spending time with the animals who are very friendly.

Everything was really well thought out with regard to what you need when on holiday with children. This was our first holiday with our 1 year old so we were apprehensive, but everything was perfect.

The location is peaceful and the views are beautiful. We’ll definitely be returning!

  • A perfect week’s holiday

    on 25/07/2021

My husband and I spent a wonderful week in one of the houses, adjacent to one rented by our daughter and family Our house provided all that we needed and we were touched by the little doggie presents too. Weather was perfect and swimming pool a definite bonus for our granddaughters. Having our own, individual garden was an added bonus. All in all we had a wonderful time and look forward to visiting again. Many thanks for everything.

  • Perfect place to stay with little ones

    on 03/07/2021

We spent a wonderful week at Sandy Bay Cottage with our 19 month old daughter and I would highly recommend this place to other parents. The play area and animals were a huge hit with our daughter. It was really nice to get to meet the animals up close during the feeding session and it was wonderful to see how well looked after all the animals were. I loved that they had rescue chickens.

The Honesty shop with frozen meals was really helpful on days when things had to be fast.

The cottage was very clean and it was great that things such as high chairs and a baby bath are provided.

There are lots of nice places a short car ride away such as Lynmouth or Woolacombe beach.

  • A lovely lovely holiday spot

    on 12/06/2021

I am reluctant to praise it too much in case so many people book that there are no houses left for our return.
The customer service was wonderful and so friendly and welcoming. Alice was always attentive and helpful, Roy made animal feeding a delight for our grand daughter and a source of local information. The cleaning staff were also positive. The site is secluded and beautiful, the pool was the biggest draw for us and did not disappoint. The cottages are tasteful and comfortable. We will return next year.

  • Extremely comfortable, cosy and well equipped

    on 05/06/2021

This was our first stay at Sandy Bay Cottage and found it extremely comfortable, cosy and well equipped. We particularly liked the shower room. There was nothing that we needed in the house that was not there. A most pleasant stay.
The personnel on site were knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.

  • Fantastic, I'd stay here again in a heartbeat

    on 28/04/2021

I stayed in the littlest cottage for a 3 night stay. Families were also nearby in the bigger properties - it seems a wonderful place for small and large parties. I could hear children laughing and playing, it was lovely.
I absolutely loved my stay. Beyond the care and cleanliness (inside and out), I particularly loved eating my breakfast in the sun outside my cottage, wandering to see the lambs, goats and the pig. Traveling solo, I felt secure and safe. I loved the location - North Devon is wonderful at any time, but in the sunshine it's stunning. I used the property as my base from which to explore and walk and follow my nose. I came back to the cottage in the evenings happily knackered - for a rest, a glass of wine and a cosy sleep. It was a weekend that will stay with me for a long, long time. Thank you.

  • Perfect stay

    on 25/04/2021

We had a wonderful short break at Sandy Bay House. Alice is a perfect host and made us so welcome. The cottage was very comfortable and well equipped and the location is truly stunning and so peaceful. Lots to keep children amused and the swimming pool was lovely. We are returning in July with our family and so looking forward to it.

  • Autumn break

    on 04/10/2020

We have just spent a very relaxing week at Sandy Bay Cottage. Lovely location, cottage small and cosy but just the two of us and our dog, so suited us fine. Well equipped, comfy bed, and very convenient for touring the area. Loved our stay and would recommend.
