The Best Beaches in Dubrovnik
For secluded swimming: Danče Beach
Danče Beach occupies a rocky cove just west of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. It has long been a popular swimming place among local residents, who come here to dive from the rocks and swim in the clear, deep water.
There is no traditional stretch of sand or shingle. Instead, flat rocks and concrete platforms provide places to leave a towel and enter the sea by steps or ladders. This gives Danče a quieter, less commercial atmosphere than Banje or the beaches around Lapad.
The beach is within walking distance of the Old Town, although the route includes slopes and steps. Bring water shoes and arrive in the morning for calm surroundings and a better choice of places beside the sea.
For convenience: Banje Beach
Banje is the best-known beach in Dubrovnik and the closest major beach to the Old Town. It lies just beyond Ploče Gate, with views across the water towards Lokrum and back towards the city walls.
The shore consists mainly of fine pebbles and shingle, while the clear water makes it a good choice for swimming. Visitors can usually hire sunbeds and umbrellas or try watersports during the summer. A beach bar and restaurant sit behind the shore.
Its convenient location also makes Banje one of Dubrovnik’s busiest beaches, particularly during July and August. Arrive early, or visit towards the end of the afternoon when the day-trippers begin to leave.
Best for views of the Old Town: Sveti Jakov Beach
Sveti Jakov offers one of the finest coastal views in Dubrovnik. Its pebble shore looks across the Adriatic towards Lokrum and the Old Town, which takes on a warm glow as the sun begins to set.
The beach lies east of the historic centre and feels more peaceful than Banje, although it is no longer much of a secret. A long staircase leads down to the shore, so it is not the easiest option for pushchairs, limited mobility, or anyone carrying plenty of beach equipment.
Sunbeds and refreshments are generally available during the main season, but the real attraction is the setting: turquoise water, a rugged shoreline, and Dubrovnik’s walls in the distance.
Best sandy beach near Dubrovnik: Šunj Beach
Šunj lies on the island of Lopud, one of the Elaphiti Islands off the Dubrovnik coast. Unlike most beaches around the city, it has a broad sandy shore and shallow water, making it particularly appealing to families and less confident swimmers.
The beach sits on the opposite side of the island from Lopud’s ferry port. Visitors can reach it on foot across the island or take one of the local shuttle vehicles that operate during the summer.
Bars, restaurants, sunbeds, and watersports are usually available in the main season. The shallow bay can become lively on summer afternoons, but it still offers an enjoyable change from Dubrovnik’s predominantly rocky and pebbled coastline.
Regular boats connect Dubrovnik with the Elaphiti Islands, although timetables vary by season and summer tickets are worth arranging in advance.
Best for families: Uvala Lapad Beach
Uvala Lapad sits on the Lapad Peninsula, around three kilometres from Dubrovnik’s Old Town. The surrounding area has a pedestrian promenade, restaurants, cafés, play areas, and several places to swim, making it one of the most convenient parts of Dubrovnik for families.
The main beach combines pebbles with paved areas and generally offers sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, and seasonal watersports. Dubrovnik’s tourism board highlights Uvala Lapad as one of the city beaches offering organised sporting and entertainment activities.
Buses connect Lapad with the Old Town, so the beach is easy to reach without a car. Stay into the evening for a walk along the promenade and dinner looking over the bay.
Best for an island escape: Lokrum
Lokrum is a forested island and protected nature reserve just off the Dubrovnik coast. Boats leave from the Old Port during the visitor season, making it one of the easiest day trips from the city.
There is no single sandy beach on Lokrum. Instead, visitors swim from rocky coves, stone platforms, and small pebble shores around the island. Dense Mediterranean vegetation provides plenty of shade, while the surrounding water is clear and inviting.
Away from the water, you can explore the botanical gardens, former Benedictine monastery, and Fort Royal. Kayak tours also circle the island, giving paddlers a closer view of its cliffs and caves.
