Outstanding Landscapes
The resort of Albufeira on Portugal’s Algarve is the largest and probably liveliest town on the coast. This means that, while not everything it has to offer is likely to be to your taste, there is a good chance there will be something that is.
The good news is that the excessive partying, stag dos and heavy drinking are largely confined to one area – The Strip – a good 2km east of the Old Town. It’s the latter area where the quieter, more relaxed Albufeira shows itself, with many traditional restaurants serving great seafood and Portuguese specialities. There are also more chic lounges and clubs to discover around the town.
As well as the extensive beaches, Albufeira offers many boat tours departing from the marina, from deep-sea fishing to dolphin watching and general sightseeing. The tourist train provides a fun way to get around on land, and public transport is generally inexpensive. If you’re travelling with children, you could also pay a visit to one of the area’s water parks.
Zoomarine adds wildlife including dolphins and tropical birds to the wave pools and flumes found at the likes of Slide & Splash. There is also a cinema, offering lots of film choices, located in the Algarve Shopping Center.
If Albufeira gets too full on, it’s easy to take a day trip to a quieter corner of the Algarve. Among local favourites are pretty Loulé and Silves, both of which will open your eyes to the real Portugal, with plenty of historical and architectural interest.

THE REGION
Set along Portugal’s sun-drenched Algarve coast, Albufeira
is a vibrant seaside town that effortlessly blends golden beaches, historic
charm and a lively holiday atmosphere. Once a quiet fishing village, it has
grown into one of the Algarve’s most popular destinations, celebrated for its
stunning coastline, welcoming climate and wide appeal to families, couples and
groups alike.
At the heart of Albufeira lies its picturesque Old Town,
where cobbled streets are lined with traditional restaurants, pastelarias and
local craft shops. The Old Town Square is a hub of activity both day and night,
often hosting live music and cultural events, making it a perfect spot to soak
up the town’s authentic atmosphere.
Albufeira is best known for its beautiful beaches, many of
which are framed by dramatic limestone cliffs. Praia dos Pescadores, located
right by the Old Town, is ideal for those who want easy access to cafés and
boat trips, while nearby beaches such as São Rafael, Galé and Coelha offer a
more natural, laid-back feel with crystal-clear waters and striking rock
formations. These beaches are perfect for swimming, sunbathing and water sports.
After dark, Albufeira’s nightlife scene is one of the most
famous in the Algarve. The lively Strip in the Montechoro area is packed with
bars, clubs and late-night venues, while the marina offers a more relaxed
evening vibe with waterfront dining and cocktail bars.
Nature lovers and golfers are also well catered for, with
scenic coastal walks, boat tours to the famous Benagil caves, and several
top-class golf courses just a short drive away. Albufeira is conveniently located near Faro Airport and benefits from excellent road and public transport links, making it an ideal base for discovering the wider region.
