Why visit Sicily?

Sicily is a place of striking contrasts and strong identity, where ancient history, dramatic landscapes and an exceptional food culture come together. Influenced by Greek, Roman, Arab and Norman civilisations, the island wears its heritage proudly, while daily life still revolves around local markets, long lunches and time spent outdoors. Add volcanic vineyards, sun-drenched beaches and a coastline that seems to stretch forever, and Sicily quickly reveals its irresistible appeal.

This pride in the island’s unique cultural and natural heritage is expressed in one of the world’s most respected cuisines and culinary masterpieces; in Sicily, food is so much more than a good meal – it’s an integral part of the community. Fresh seafood features prominently but citrus, pistachios, almonds, and ricotta are all local favourites, too.

Sicily also boasts several spectacular coastal cities and towns, most notably Palermo, Syracuse, Taormina, and Cefalù. Each is loaded with the weight of Sicily’s long and storied history. Relics, ancient ruins, and eye-catching architecture are always just around the corner.

What Oliver loves

Holidays to Sicily aren’t complete without a trip to Palermo to explore its delicious street-food scene. Try traditional arancini (deep fried risotto balls with various fillings), panino can le panelle (fried chickpea fritters) or, if you’re brave, stigghiola (lamb, goat, or chicken intestines).

Top Tips

  • Good to know: The Sicilian dialect differs considerably from mainland Italian, and even those with a good grasp of the language may struggle to understand the locals.

  • Bear in mind: Businesses will often close between 1 pm and 5 pm during the hotter months.

  • Tipping in Sicily: While it’s a nice touch to leave a little extra something, there isn’t a huge tipping culture in Sicily. A few euros after a meal or small change following a good coffee is plenty.

Sicily travel: Getting there and around

By plane
Sicily is served by several international airports, including Palermo, Catania, Trapani and Comiso, making it easy to reach wherever you’re staying.

By car
Hiring a car is highly recommended, especially if you want to explore beaches, countryside and smaller towns at your own pace.

By train or bus
Trains and buses connect major towns and coastal routes, though services are more limited inland. They’re a good option if you’re travelling light or staying put.

By boat
Ferries link Sicily to mainland Italy and the Aeolian Islands, offering a scenic alternative for island-hopping.
