What you should know…

  • The pool has no gate, and there are a few walls where young children will need to be watched carefully
  • Although public transport is available, you'll probably want to arrange some car hire so you can freely explore the many ancient sites and the traditional and less touristic rural villages. If you'd prefer a car with a driver may be booked through the owner, best to do this in advance.

Villa Oleandro enjoys a fantastic hilltop location in the stunning countryside surrounding the city of Chania (7.8 km), whilst only a few steps from the sea and the Blue flag sandy beach of Agios Ounofrios. The gorgeous village of Kounopidiana is only 1.5 km far and boasts a selection of traditional Greek tavernas, lively bars and local shops.

The whole North coast of Crete is a succession of incredible beaches with crystal clear waters, where you can relax on comfortable sunbeds, find shelter under very handy parasols or join an array of exciting watersport activities. Elafonissi and Falasarna beaches, Tersanas, Kalatha, Macherida, Stavros, Marathi and Seitan Limania are just a few options, all within a 20 minutes drive!

A visit to the ancient city of Chania, which also hosts an airport, is highly recommended. The city has seen many civilisations come and go over thousands of years of settlement, from Minoans to Romans, Byzantine to Ottoman, and this rich history has carved out a unique and mysterious town.
Restaurants, museums, churches and craft shops centre can be found around the gorgeous Venetian harbour, which represents a window into the past Turkish and Venetian architecture that has otherwise largely been destroyed by war. Watching the sunset past the old lighthouse is a truly unmissable experience, but the area offers a different picturesque aesthetic at any time of day.

Be sure to sample the fresh fish they pull in from the harbour each day, or even take a boat out and do some fishing or snorkelling yourself!
Along with the above sightseeing opportunities, keep in mind that the Akrotiri Peninsula has a number of unique archaeological sites which are certainly worth a visit. Explore the caves of Stavros, Arkalospilio and Arkaudospilius, and discover the fascinating history lying behind the Gouverneto and Saint John the Hermit monasteries.

How to reach Chania

There are two ways to reach Chania: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane:
Chania Airport (CHQ) is only a 20 minutes ride away from central Chania. During the summer months, frequents overseas and domestic flights are performed. In most of the cases, there are available buses that connect Chania city and most of the villas. You can also hire a car from one of the many rental companies at the airport, or alternatively get a taxi to bring you right to your doorstep.

By ferry:
If you choose to do an island-hopping trip and use the ferry as a method of transportation, then the closest port is in Souda, only 8km from the centre of Chania. Only ferries from Piraeus in Athens or Heraklion in Crete. Heraklion port has a wider choice: you can also take a ferry from other Greek islands like Santorini, Mykonos or Paros, but you will have to take a longer bus ride to reach your villa. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Your kids will be spoilt for choice with things to do when you stay at Villa Oleandro. Let’s start with the villa itself, starting with complimentary Wi-Fi throughout, an i-pod docking stations to play their favourite tunes, a PlayStation 4 and Wii for games galore, a DVD player to watch the latest films, and a satellite TV and selection of games for cooler weather days. Outside there’s a huge salt water pool where they can swim and splash all day, there’s no set hours when it’s your own, and we’ve thrown in a few inflatables too. The enclosed grounds are set in a one acre plot, the perfect place to climb the many trees, set up games on the lawn, or practice ping-pong on the table tennis table. The nearest beach of Agios Ounofrios is a short walk from the villa, which has a beautiful sandy beach, with easy entry warm shallow waters. Anyone for tennis, then you’re in luck with some local courts within walking distance. Or get on your horse and ride it at the nearby stables, there’s nothing better than a gallop across the sands at sunset. From the local town of Chania all aboard for a family day at sea, swim and snorkel in local bays, and enjoy a traditional meze lunch on the boat. If you’re feeling flush, charter a yacht with a captain and cook, and sail until the sun sets. Further afield the north coast of Crete has a plethora of family-friendly beaches, offering a selection of water sports, from kid’s banana boat rides to speedy jet skis.

There’s plenty of day trips too, organised and leaving from Chania town or hire a car and go exploring.  Spend the day bathing on the stunning pink sands of Elafonisi, an area of protected wildlife and beauty. Bathe in the Balos Lagoon, and swim or sail out to sea to the island of Gramvousa, where you will find an old Venetian Castle, and a cave that is believed to be an ancient shipyard. Get those legs walking with a 15k hike to Samaria Gorge, Europe’s longest gorge, and where you can spot the local flora and fauna, and the famous Kri-Kri goats. There’s a shortened version of the walk starting at the village of Agia Roumeli, that is only 3km long, just right for little legs. A visit to the local town of Chania is well worth it, wander the ancient streets, where your kids can take part in the Scavenger Hunt challenge, discover local landmarks by following clues and maps on their smart phones. The local Limnoupolis Water Park is the perfect place to take the kids for the day, with a lazy river, extreme slides, swimming pools galore, a children’s playground in the pool and poolside, as well as cafes and bars. There are loads of opportunities for your children to learn some new skills, why not try stand-up paddle boarding, snorkelling, and scuba diving, great activities for older kids. For those who prefer dry land take a Jeep Safari across country on rough roads and discover traditional Greek villages and a taste of the authentic Crete. And for the dare-devils take them tandem para-gliding with professional instructors and fly like an eagle over the coastline and mountains of the island. If they’re not too tired after all of these activities, there’s the Minoan’s World 3D Museum and 9D Movie Cinema for some evening wind-down time.

  • Wonderful

    Posted by LC on 24/08/2021

We loved our stay at Villa Oleandro. The villa itself is beautiful and sparklingly clean, with many thoughtful additions supplied. The gardens and pool are absolutely first rate. The owners were always available to offer help and advice. We opted not to hire a car and made use of Manolis, the driver recommended by the villa, to take us on outings to Chania and for transport to and from the villa. He was super efficient, informative and friendly. We also hired a local chef for several lunches, all of a very high quality and much enjoyed by young and old alike. Thank you to everyone for making our stay so special. We hope to return very soon.
