Enjoying panoramic mountainous and countryside views from its raised terrace and glimpses of Gordes to the west, you could not have a prettier setting than at Villa Gordes! Only a leisurely stroll away from the property, Gordes has been called the most beautiful village in France.
Perched on a rocky headland in the Vaucluse mountains at the heart of the Luberon Regional National Park, Gordes is gorgeous with stone houses, cobbled streets dotted with fountains and an 11th century Renaissance castle dominating the landscape. A visit to the castle's fantastic art exhibitions is a must, and L’Eglise Saint Fermin Church and the abbey of Our Lady of Sasanqua, surrounded by lavender fields, are truly sights worth seeing.
Market day is every Tuesday morning and you can expect a whirl of colour and delicious aromas. Set at the foot of the castle, you can pick up fresh local produce and wonderful artisan goods or grab a coffee and people watch or enjoy the incredible views from the balcony at Le Cercle Republicain.
Only a short drive away are an abundance of beautiful villages such as Lacoste famous for its Castle, formally home to the Marquis de Sade and now home to Pierre Cardin, however Roussillon is one of the most recognisable villages in France. Roussillon is picture perfect with beautiful Houses in every shade of Ochre and is often referred to as the ‘French Grand Canyon’ due to its incredible bright orange rocks. There are plenty of amenities including charming restaurants; cafes, bakeries, specialist shops and art galleries. Place de la Maire (Town hall square) is simply stunning and is the spot ‘instagrammers’ head to!
The Ochre trail (Sentier des Ochre) will delight kids big and small. The trail starts in the middle of the village and there is an easy or harder trail option. Well signed paths through the old open pit ochre quarry will help you learn more about this unique area as you pass by spectacular cliffs and structures in stunning colours.
Aix-en-Provence is a wonderful city and is less than an hour’s drive from the property. Upmarket and classy with leafy boulevards lined with 17th & 18th century mansions Aix offers chic shopping and fabulous street markets in its part pedestrianised centre and is an artist’s delight with its beautiful light filled boulevards captured by Cezanne and others.
With over 600 winegrowers in Provence there’s no shortage of vineyards to visit so look up the ‘Provence Wine Route’ to find the best places to sample wonderful rosés or the famous Chateauneuf du Pape.
Villa Gordes is the real deal and the perfect base to immerse yourself in Provençal living!
The Provençal way of life is one that’s deeply tempting for anyone who’s been feeling the need to get away from it all. This is a place where the Mediterranean weather turns fields of corn and lavender into picture-perfect backdrops, where you can sip your locally bought wine and enjoy the landscapes before heading out and tackling them head-on with a range of great activities for families, groups of friends and adventurous foodies. Better yet, our range of villas in Provence and chateaux and holiday homes in the Côte d’Azur make the perfect base to explore this enchanting region!
Provence offers outside living at its best, exploring pretty villages, hiking, cycling or meandering through lavender fields, sunny days with children are going to be a lot of fun in this region.
After hiking through the Ochre trail in Roussillon its worth taking children to the Écomusée de l’ocre museum which offers fabulous discovery workshops all about Ochre and is suitable for all ages- art lovers will delight in finding out the secrets behind the manufacture of pastels and watercolour paintings.
The Forêt des Cèdres, located on a hill top adjacent to Bonnieux. Is a lovely cycle & hiking trail and the shade provided by the high trees means it never gets too hot and the views are spectacular.
Less than an hour’s drive from the property, Avignon is a fabulous family destination. From the awesome Palais des Papes to the famous Pont d’Avignon there is plenty to do and see, Kids will love the tourist train that takes in all the main sites. A good shout is to take the free shuttle boat across the river to Barthelasse Island, ideal for a picnic and run around. There are plenty of water sports for water babies to try out too.
The whole family might enjoy taking a fun cookery course in a professional kitchen – check out the Avignon tourism website for details.
A unique family day out is to visit the ancient walled town of Les Baux de Provence. Kids can download a kid’s paper chase to discover the village’s history and legends.
You can also introduce your budding Van Goughs to the world of art at the Carrières de Lumières, sited in an underground quarry beneath the village. Enjoy a spectacular moving light show of art to the sound of music. With artwork projected on walls and floors in the darkened quarry you will feel you are inside the works of art.
