Maison Lenglen overlooks the dreamy French village of Gordes in the Luberon region of Provence. You can easily walk along the road to enjoy the village’s lively Tuesday morning market and pick up supplies or enjoy a glass of wine or two.

Gordes boasts pretty narrow alleyways lined with charming restaurants and cafes as well as a fragrant bakery and food stores. The village also has a fascinating history - during World War II Gordes was mostly destroyed and afterwards it was awarded the Croix de Guerre medal. Today, the village is dominated by its wonderful church and castle and is known for its popular market which enjoys the best local produce as well as crafts and fabrics.

A magical underground world can also be discovered in Gordes. The hidden treasures of the Caves du Palais Saint Firmin are just a five minute walk from the castle. Here lies a small underground city complete with carved pillars, stone staircases and beautiful vaulted ceilings. The caves would have been used in the Middle Ages to house craft activities and it is still possible to see an old oil mill, cisterns and pipes dug into the rock.

The hamlet of ‘Les Cabanes’, 4km from Gordes, is now known as the Village des Bories. Sitting on the slopes of the Vaucluse Mountains, it was restored at the beginning of the 17th century and is an open-air museum of dry stone huts. Visiting the hamlet is like stepping back in time to the Bronze Age, when it it thought the houses were originally built!

Also just outside of Gordes, you can visit the stunning Senanque Abbey which is 5km away and surrounded by beautiful lavender. After touring the monastery, be sure to snap a great family photo in the lavendar fields.

The lively Provençal markets are also not to be missed. As well as the local Gordes market, you can visit Carpentras (28km) on Friday mornings while L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (20km) has a huge market on Sunday mornings which features antiques and bric-a-brac alongside local produce.

Provence is rich in history and there are plenty of attractions to include in your holiday programme. The Triumphal Arch in Orange (60km) and the Papal Palace and Pont St Benezet in Avignon (45km) are all worth visiting. Avignon is a very attractive walled city which served as the home of the Pope for 67 years. Today, it is one of France’s most popular tourist cities with outstanding museums and magnificent architecture.

Region

With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.

Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.

Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.

To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.

Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.

The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.

Kids

Maison Lenglen is a wonderful pick for large groups of family or friends with children. The property is very comfortable, the gardens are stunning and there is so much space for family games and fun. When you do wish to leave the house in search of entertainment, the surrounding area also has plenty to offer.

In Avignon, a little tourist train takes visitors to the main sights including the Palais des Papes, the famous bridge and the winding, pretty back streets of the old town. There are also hop-on-hop-off buses that the whole family will enjoy or horse-drawn carriage rides. River cruises, canoe trips or a boat shuttle across the Rhone to Barthelasses Island are great ways of seeing more of the sights and giving tired legs a break.

On Barthelasses Island, there are beautiful views across to Avignon, a pony and horse riding club, bikes for hire, an Olympic-size swimming pool and mini golf. The boat shuttle leaves just east of the Saint Benezet Bridge, better know as the famous Pont d’Avignon.

Back in Avignon families can visit the Palais des Papes and pick up a HistoPad which offers a specially designed treasure hunt and games for children. There are several museums in Avignon that children will enjoy, including The Musee Requien, a natural history museum. In summer, a giant ferris wheel is installed on the river bank and there is a carousel near the Palais des Papes.

The splendour of Roussillon should not be missed. There are so many shades of ochre to enjoys across this hillside village. It is bright and beautiful and children love wandering around the spiralling streets. At the top of the village there are amazing panoramic views across the valley to the Grand Luberon, the slopes of Mont Ventoux and the plateau of the Vaucluse.

  • Beautiful spacious lux house with great views - close to town

    on 30/09/2023

We had another wonderful stay for the second year in a row here, views are wonderful, particularly from the covered patio. Pool and pool house a terrific and there are lots of wonderful rooms for our large family. Especially liked the new opened up kitchen with the fancy coffee maker, and the additional baths. We walked to town several times and drove others - walk on market day- a great place to pick up many things for picnics. The cafe Republican has a great balcony in the back to take your morning coffee overlooking the country side. Easy drives around the valley to explore other towns and nice vistas.

  • An amazing setting and great house

    on 26/08/2023

Easily one of the most beautiful settings I have ever stayed at. The upscale house is structured to answer your every whim. Swim in a heated pool, enjoy a quiet read outside on comfy patio furniture, great kitchen to try your hand at French provincial recipes, and formal and informal dinning rooms to enjoy your meals. There is plenty of room to spread out. The best of modern conveniences in architecture that is decidedly French. Just a 15 minute walk into one of the quaintest towns with the nicest people who are proud of their history.
