Ideal for Kids Walk to Village Laptop Friendly Workspace All Bedrooms En-Suite

Experience the magic of the Luberon in this beautiful village house with a swimming pool and mesmerising valley views, set in the historic and enchanting village of Oppède le Vieux.

This hidden gem is a rare find in such an idyllic and timeless place – step inside and sense the history all around you as you appreciate the wonderful décor and authentic character. A large hallway, lounge and dining area wraps around the maison with ample space to relax and dine alongside floor to ceiling windows framing the incredible vistas. A rather elegant study and TV room adds to the sense of comfort whilst the charmingly traditional kitchen features a breakfast table for your morning baguettes and croissants. Five pretty bedrooms with either village or valley views each have an en suite bath or shower room, making Maison Coloniale ideal for up to 10 guests.

The outdoor space is just as impressive with the most spectacular views. It feels private from the rest of the village and it’s the perfect place for a coffee in the shade of the mulberry tree or dining al-fresco on the attractive terrace. Enjoy a glass of local wine as you gaze out towards the wooded hills and village or take a dip in the swimming pool to cool off on warm summer days.

Of course, it’s only a minutes stroll to the heart of the old village, a gorgeous place with beautifully restored houses, a couple of restaurants and a pottery studio. In an outstanding position, the village is perched on a mountainside looking out towards the Oppède valley. As you climb the steep lanes above the village towards the castle ruins and church the scenery is even more dramatic. This is Provence at its very best.

Other beguiling Luberon villages waiting to be explored include Ménerbes, Gordes and Roussillon whilst there are many breathtaking hikes and bike rides through the countryside passing vineyards, cherry orchards, lavender fields and woodland. Visit charming Farmer’s markets, potter around antique stores or sample the excellent wines of the Luberon.

Soak up the romance of Aix-en-Provence or Saint-Rémy, kayak along the Sorgue and admire the dreamy Provençal landscapes which inspired the likes of Van Gogh and Cézanne in this incredible part of southern France.

Maison Coloniale is a village house in beautiful Oppède le Vieux, a tiny 12th century village in the Luberon region of Provence.

Step out of your home and straight onto the narrow lanes of the medieval village and within a minute you can be in the pretty village square with its café-restaurant, passing ancient houses en route. Walk above Oppède le Vieux to the very top to see the church and castle ruins, taking care on the steep lanes (and there are some steep drops too) and admire the incredible Luberon views around you.

About 2km away by car is the more modern part of Oppède which is still charming and authentic in its own Provençal way. Here you will find amenities such as a couple of restaurants, a bakery, bar and a tennis court. A little further is Coustellet (7km) with supermarkets, a pharmacy and a brilliant Farmer’s market on a Sunday morning showcasing the very best local produce.

There are so many other idyllic Luberon villages to discover – perhaps start in nearby Ménerbes (5km), the place that inspired Peter Mayes’ ‘ A Year in Provence’, also known as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. The ochre-tinted village of Roussillon, Van-Gogh’s beloved Gordes and picture-perfect Bonnieux can also be reached within half an hour or head to historic Apt on a Saturday morning to experience one of Provence’s most wonderful markets.

Hiking through the Luberon is also incredible, including many trails linking villages passing through vineyards, olive groves, cherry orchards, woodland and lavender fields. Look out for cycling and mountain biking opportunities as well as horse-riding and rock-climbing. Hire kayaks and sail down the Sorgue river from Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.

Other day trips to consider include Avignon (37km) with its UNESCO World Heritage sites, the romantic town of Aix-en-Provence, around an hour to the south, or even Marseille (90km) with all its vibrancy and character. Then there’s artistic Saint-Rémy, perhaps combined with the gorgeous hilltop village of Les Baux-de-Provence in the captivating Les Alpilles region of Provence, just under an hour by car.

Region

With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.

Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.

Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.

To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.

Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.

The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.

Kids

Best Suited For: Children
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Family walks through enchanting landscapes, cycle rides suitable for a variety of abilities, horse-riding and even some fantastic rock-climbing opportunities – the Luberon offers a wealth of experiences for many ages.

Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is a great place to hire kayaks and canoes to sail along the Sorgue river towards L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue or head to the tree-top activity centre with trails suitable for a range of ages from 3+, depending on height restrictions.

Animal lovers may appreciate a day at the zoo near La Barben, around an hour away, which also features a children’s playground. Alternatively, head north towards Carpentras where you will find the interesting caves at Grottes de Thouzon, the theme park rides of Parc Spirou and the charming model railway centre, Le Jarditrain.

  • Total heaven

    on 22/09/2020

We have stayed three times and cannot wait to return! It’s the most perfect place for a quiet getaway, surrounded by the most beautiful countryside and stunning views... every direction you look feels like a scene from a film! The house itself is so beautiful... amazing décor and furniture and everything you need to feel at home. It’s really spacious but still feels very cosy and comfortable. The outside area is perfect... beautiful pool... and totally secluded. Drinking a glass of rosé on the terrace overlooking the valley as the sun sets every evening felt like total heaven. The whole process of booking was so easy and communication with the host was great. In short, this is a little piece of paradise with everything you need for that perfect Provençal holiday and we will be coming back as soon as possible! Thank you x

  • Paradise in Provence

    on 18/08/2020

We spent a wonderful week in this stunning house with a group of friends. Everything about it was perfect. The incredible views, the beautiful décor, the gorgeous terrace and pool. So many lovely places nearby to visit, if you can drag yourself away from this really quite special retreat in the heart of the Luberon hills. We really couldn’t have asked for more and will definitely be returning.

  • Dream Villa

    on 27/07/2020

Spent the most incredible week here with friends. It’s the most tranquil secluded villa with unbeatable views and a gorgeous veranda and swimming pool to laze about, read, drink local wine and generally unwind. The house itself is beautifully furnished. And the village is stunning and full of history. You have to visit the little restaurant at the bottom of the hill - a truly French experience. A five star villa. Comfy luxury. We absolutely loved our time at Maison Coloniale and can’t wait to return when restrictions allow!
